My mother was Born in Belgium but during the war 1940-1945 she lives in Swiss in Bern and by a aunt in Glockental. There she went to school and learned Swiss - German. Later, when I was child, we came every year in Swiss to visit the family and so I learned to understand the wonderfull language. My mother passed away 30 years ago and the only way to be in contact with Swiss-German is listening SRF1 radio now. So I am happy to see you at You Tube now.😊🇨🇭❤️

  • That's a really great video with some basic everyday phrases, liked it a lot! I also found helpful a slow pronunciation, as it allows to catch important details :) Thanks a lot for your efforts and looking forward to the next episodes! Btw, one question I've had in my mind for a long time but still not able to find the answer: What is the difference between simple "Grüezi" and "Grüezi wohl"? My guess that the latter is a more polite/respectful version but I'm not sure. In what situations one should you use "Grüezi wohl"? Thanks in advance :)

    @valeriishevchuk9028@valeriishevchuk90283 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Valerii, thanks for watching my videos! :) I'd say "Grüezi wohl" is a bit outdated maybe. But I also use it sometimes, especially if I should know but don't remember the family name of the other person (and this happens quite often). :D So instead of saying their name "Grüezi Frau Müller", I just say "Grüezi wohl", to make it sound longer, haha. But these are just nuances and I'm sure other Swiss people would explain that differently.

  • I'm Swiss and I've never heard of only "zi". Most of the times you would also mumble the beginning, just very quickly so it get's more a "ezi". And what's more to say... in these days a lot of people also tend to use "Hallo" instead of "Grüezi". This isn't considered so informal anymore even among adults / older people. Actually even the "Hoi" and "Sali" are used less often than some years ago. They are often replaced by "Hallo" as well. With one exception: When adding the name, you'd rather use "Hoi" instead of "Hallo". So it's either "Hallo" only or "Hoi xy".

    • Plz explain if there is too much difference in Swiss German and high German, I am confused either to start a course from of high German or Swiss German, Both of them are online as I can manage it whilst being outside Germany or Switzerland but there is a big difference of prices between them. What would be your suggestions regarding my case as in future I want this learning process for postgraduation from Switzerland in medicine. Thanks

    • @@IrfanAli-jk4us Hi Irfan, have you watched my Quick Guide to the Swiss German Language? There I explain more about those differences. In your case I'd definitely do a German course first, as for medicine, most will be written and teached in German or even English. Swiss German will be used in everyday language. May I ask which course is more expensive? :)

  • Could you explain why you say “ich hät gern es Bier”? I would think the verb conjugated should be “ich ha gern es Bier”. I am seeing this sometimes in your conversations.

    @gracep584@gracep5842 жыл бұрын
    • Very good question, Grace! "Hät gern" is subjunctiv II and that's why it's different (=I would like). But you are right "ich ha" would be the indicative present form.

    • When you say "ich ha gern es bier" it means that you like beer, or that you already have one because "ich ha" means "I have" and "Ich hät gern" means "I would like to have" :)

  • How offended would a random Swiss be if you simply spoke informally all the time? As an American the only time I'm spoken to formally is if I'm getting a traffic citation, or maybe the bank if I'm doing well.

    @Davi-did@Davi-did2 жыл бұрын
    • It really depends on the person. But most people wouldn't be offended at all. Rather the opposite. I quite like it if people don't talk formally to me. It seems just nicer to me.
