Audi e-tron S Sportback Review - We drive one of six electric Audi e-trons launching soon in SA
Looking for a used Audi in South Africa? We have over 2100 to choose from!
www.cars.co.za/usedcars/Audi/
Audi South Africa have committed to launching six fully electric cars on the local market within the next three years, and we were excited to be afforded the opportunity to drive the flagship SUV.
While Audi will sell ICE cars in South Africa (such as their RS range) until at least 2033, electric mobility is a big focus for the company and we're excited to see the roll-out.
The flagship e-tron S Sportback that we sampled offers a stonking 370kW of power and is good for a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds - but it certainly feels faster, and offers a range of between 350 and 380km.
In this video, we take a detailed look at the newcomer, and try answer as many of your questions as possible.

The problem with electric cars is the price to buy is eye watering with that money you can get a full spec audi rsq3 for 1.35 million
Initial cost is discouraging, running costs are great. Great review!
Still can't go on a road trip with these beautiful machines.
Can you afford it
Indeed
So happy Audi did not disappoint on the interior design, quality, and feel(no contest) but I am even happier there is no trouble turbos,DSG, and all the planned obsolesce technology they have in their ICE. I still bet, the hybrid is the perfect future powertrain and not BEV for all-around motoring (City & long distance) until PHEV are scaleable. Otherwise a brilliant innovative machine & excellent vid, Ciro
This was a very great review. Please do review a BMW IX as well.
Love your style of presenting. For me this is the best channel at the moment. Keep up the good work.
I remember a time when the idea of electric cars sounded very boring, but the way technology has progressed makes the future look extremely exciting!!
Not only sounded boring (not that they make any sound), but looked boring. Especially our South African failed one, the Joule
Wow it looks really good and expensive! I did not like the look of it in pictures but your video has revealed it's jaw dropping beauty! What a piece of art!!!
Quality commentary and super video edit (as always), great work guys. Your review really does make me feel like I just went for a spin in these cars. Also, great explanation in comparing electric and petrol, our gov needs to wake up and make electric more easier to purchase.
Nooooo, our government SHOULD be responsible and ban e-cars for now.
Why?
@@childofyah268 Ev's are terrible for the environment ! EV's existance literally ads a NET of over 40 % more coal burn, through the complete supply chain, compared to normal Internal combust. cars 😰 EV' should be baned, put on hold until the technology is developed better & well enough, maybe within the next 20 to 30 years probably, so that, at least, it won't cause so much damage to the environment. EV's advertised under the flag of "clean energy" or "environmentally green", is such a lie, and currently simply a marketing strategy - a terribly deceiving one at that - EINA 😣
@@CobusDerrenberg EV's do produce more CO2 in the manufacturing process compared to ICE vehicles but EV's do not produce any CO2 when driving so it is better for the enviroment than ICE vehicles
@@childofyah268 You are 100% correct, BUT the entire supply chain for the existance of the EV create MUCH MUCH more damage to the environment NET EFFECT., compared to IC cars. EV's should be banned untill technogy has been significantly improved, & if they can't, the concept should be scrapped. Doesn't make sense at all 😉
They should also introduce powerbank for these EV's here in South Africa
i hear you but, 1) the price. unless you have a decent lifestyle that affords you to buy when you have other exotics beside it, then go for it. 2) new tech brings brings new flaws, that being range phobia...or something like that whereby you drive with a fear of losing power range and so on. 3) try convincing families with sense over cash to buy such a car in our economy and with also ESKOM being the white elephant it is now.
Eskom is not a problem at all for electric cars. Loadshedding lasts about 2hrs at a time. You can use your car to light up your house during loadshedding then charge it after 2hrs of blackout.
For me, I am interested in servicing and maintaining the car more than charging it. also the how would one plan his drive from PTA to Polokwane...?
I just heard Matt from carwow call the front trunk a "fruit". Hahaha
And I’m very certain that he was the first to call it this 🤔🤔🤔
You are driving around century city so you can charge it afterwards?
Problem is how are going to go show off in the rural areas 🤕?
Best comment ever 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Broooo🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Strap a generator to a trailer, and tow it around. 😂 upside is that you’ll never run out of range
What is the costs of a battery replacement and every how many km will you have to do it?
Thanks for breaking down the numbers.
What is the Towing Capacity of the Audi e-tron SUV?
Hmmm.. nice. Just wondering after Audi installs the wall charger and you decide to relocate... What happens?
Then they add a levy on the charging price...
4:43 where is that station?
After watching this one, I am certainly ready for electric car. Only if they were at Haval prices 😉 Thanks for a very informative review bro 👍
Great review 👌🙏🇿🇦
Corolla, corolla cross and prius also have levels of regenerative braking
Thanks for all the information. You doing a good job, and the car is beautiful but the price is too much
Great one Ciro
How would you compare this to the Tesla you drove? Build quality and speed?
Car looks awesome, nice spec
Is it 4x4 can it go off road ?
It will take another 10-20 years before we see affordable e-cars in SA.
That's the only problem, a lot of people like myself would love this car, but they price it out of range for the normal person like myself,
China will bring affordable electric-cars to SA as soon as the SA charging infrastructure get better
Thankfully more like 1 to 2 years
I agree
At this rate we’d probably get dumped with many ICE cars that are no longer needed from the UK and Japan, once they got full electric.
Hi Ciro. Please can you kindly do a comparative test early next year of a Hyundai Staria Premium and V250d.
Hi Lesego, we will try make it happen :)
With loadshedding around, your electric car should not be the only car you have. You still need an internal combustion engine just in case.
Eskom is not a problem at all for electric cars. Loadshedding lasts about 2hrs at a time. You can use your car to light up your house during loadshedding then charge it after 2hrs of blackout.
The price, hu?
Great review 👌🏽
Thank you, thanks for watching
when will you be doing a review on the new Cherry Tigo pro 4 , the average guys SUV/ crossover !!
Review will be published tomorrow!
Australian rock band, man!
Wow this is awesome. Although I surely can not afford to buy this car but if we can get more electric cars to choose from that will make them more affordable. I thought Hyundai and Kia was going to import their electric cars a much faster.
Audi have some of the best looking EVs on the market. If Audi South Africa play their cards right they can corner the South African EV market. Pricing and standard specification are going to be quay factors to it's success.
can I still my ICE friend's car a jump start if I have this e-tron?
The design''s going drive young professionals crazy.
The car is stunning
Thanks man! :) In a nutshell - you will save just over half the amount of fuel an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car with similar specs will use.
Fantastic review, those are some silly prices which makes it a toy. Anything about the government reducing the import tax of EVs I mean we are already paying a carbon tax on new cars not fair. Is one of those cars they are bringing the Q4 e-tron and will it be under 1m? lastly, the ID3 with the bigger battery would be my choice the Honda-e is awesome but the range is a let down.
And what does a replacement battery cost.? How safe is the battery in an accident? Does our fire department know how to handle these battery fires?
I also want to see the New BMW ix review
Problem is when you travel long distance and there are no charging points in the area
In SA you will need to rent a for long trips, plus side they won't hijack your car anymore like where will they go? lol
@@sexpistill looool that's a fact
Let's pray that Elon Musk does what he promised us 3 to 4 years back
Eskom is very excited too
When will the model X video be uploaded?
Later today :)
Just wondering if the cables will not be stolen at the mall and resold in the black market.
Oh great, now we are going to get even more loadshedding :D
That's a lot of money for a fancy Golf Cart !!
Fun fact about the E-Tron, its price starts at R2 715 000 and a top specked RS e-tron GT is R3 912 000. In comparison, a base Porsche Taycan is R2 227 000 while a top specked Taycan Turbo S is R5 561 630 (the most expensive top specked Porsche you can buy).
So. Many. Numbers.
Seeing the starting price I'm guessing the base E-tron will have more standard equipment than base Taycan.
Base Taycan is rwd and not as powerful as the base Quattro e-tron.
With the e tron money one can get audi rsq8 rs7 rs6 sq8 with the same technology
lol "Australian rock band on the left"
Last month I saw the VW ID4. These VW group EVs are gonna dominate our market if we buy them
Nice car but you can miss me with those prices hey. I'll stick to my ICE car until EVs come down to the same price range
Basically comparing the price of Crude oil and Coal. Coal is cheaper. Solar & Wind are apparently cheaper.
If there is no load shedding and you race this highly desirable Audi against a Renault Kwid between Cape Town and Johannesburg with both cars sticking to the speed limit the Kwid will win by at least 2 hours and if you remove the speed limit restriction then the Kwid will win even further. But then again I will rather drive the Audi even if it takes a week to do a trip between Cape Town and Johannesburg than doing it in a Kwid in under 14 hours. I love the Kwid and thinks it is the best new car MY Money can buy by far!!! Problem is always MY Money which is always the deciding factor. So as a daily I use my 10 year old Honda 125cc that does 150km with R50, after the latest fuel price increase, to safe enough money to take my 23 year old Audi A8 4.2 V8 on my out of town trips. My Honda can do up to 70km per liter and the Audi is still capable of doing 270km/h and together both cost me under R75k to buy, less than half the price of a new Renault Kwid and most probably also less than half the prize of the headlights on this highly desirable Audi.
@Louwrens De Kock 2011 Honda Flush WH125-6
my froot usually has seeds in not charging cables XD
Century city, noice
Red hot car with an ice cold price
Are Tesla's sold in South Africa?
No Not yet

In about 10 years maybe
Yes but the only way u can buy one is from importing the car.
What's the chances you get back to the charging station, and your charging cable is stolen? Too bad you won't be able to get back home... Hybrid seems to make more sense for now.
that is creating a new biz industry for thieves🙈 CHARGERS FOR SALE, AS GOOD AS NEW
This Audi e-tron is good, electric and expensive and Holy Crap yoh. Electric cars are fast
Manufacturers are hold back by the government who see electric vehicles as luxury items. 23% import duty plus ad valorem tax . Volvo XC40 T8 Hybrid : R1,2 million in SA vs under R900k in Australia.
Let's build one here.
like the hondaE nice car
Excellent news! Good job Audi! I hope other brands will follow. All I want is a nice electric hatchback, maybe a Corsa-e or something.
Speed, Horsepower, Kilowatts are not what worry me. Rather it’s the charging and the overall mileage range. There are no visible charging stations and with the possibility of load shedding my worries increase. Even if I had the wall-mounted EV Home power station it requires setup, perhaps solar panels with inverter extra... The cost rises and rises, that said, I would also need the portable power EV charger (The Cheapest starting at R5000 not forgetting the possible theft of portable charger) So this may seem like a good idea to get an EV, however, to make up the cost will take a lot of effort. It would be cheaper to run a diesel within our current economic situation and electric power woes. The cost of the vehicle and viable charging is staggering, and even if the car manufacturers included these things, you can bet it will be an extra you'd feel on repayments. So, the "Wheeee" factor is great, but, unless you have the cash to burn, patience for charging, the high cost of both vehicle and charging stations, EV's are a long way to being realistic replacements for South Africans and their daily travel needs, instead, these, for now, are fun fast toys that cater for the wealthy on weekends or whenever...
Eskom is not a problem at all for electric cars. Loadshedding lasts about 2hrs at a time. You can use your car to light up your house during loadshedding then charge it after 2hrs of blackout.
@@TheLocalChurchExperience Wishful thinking, soon we will experience 4 to 6 hour load shedding. Joburg has 1 million vehicles pass through their gantry tolls everyday, let's assume that's 400 thousand cars, which all need charging (Extra load on Eskom). Where will this extra miraculous energy come from with over extended load shedding hours, because even the vehicles will eventually run out of power, including your house. Even with a home use fast charger you need 6 hours.
Lol you didn't invent the word "froot" buddy. Matt Wattson did
9:24 James May's favorite part...
Haha indeed!
I’m gonna start playing the Lotto
Cool car cool price 😂
Summary of the video: " it's an optional extra"
we not ready for cars like this not with Eskom in charge of power supply and south Africa is too vast these batteries wont last long imagine a trip from joburg down to the cape a 10hours drive give or take how many stops are you going to make for charging reasons than the normal break plus we have an issue of cable theft here so all this is a factor to consider but nice car and review as always .
We need charging garages that will have an external power source (solar panels) just for when LoadShedding hits. Also we need fast chargers (180kw/h chargers in particular) so then people would be more enticed to buy EVs because charging would at least take 30 minutes (if u have an E-tron GT for example) instead of taking 2 hours to fully charge at ActiveCharge. The good thing about charging EVs is that the charging price is really cheap.
South Africa has a very good charging network on the major highways. Also most charging happens at night when there won't be much pressure on Eskom. right now there is room to charge 1 million EVs at night in South Africa according to some reports. So South Africa is ready
Eskom is not a problem at all for electric cars. Loadshedding lasts about 2hrs at a time. You can use your car to light up your house during loadshedding then charge it after 2hrs of blackout.
So vele, vele we getting everything this late, and we getting it for an arm and a leg...YHO!! This make me realize that ZAR is really weak compared to many other currencies. Normal people can get electric cars overseas, Mara here in SA you have to have a above average salary 😤😢🙄 AHH Guys these car manufacturers are milking the South African Rand cause even when you convert the money I'm pretty sure it isn't that much guys 🙌🙌 But it's expected really, if you read the whole thing thanks I guess
My main concern are the charging points in South Africa and the significantly longer time it would take to do long trips if you eventually, do find a charging point along the way to your destination. The price is eye-watering! They are brilliant as city cars. But as long distance commuters they suck. And that's why they work so well in the EU. Their countries are small, well equipped and up to scratxh with infrastructure to support EVs Hybrids are the way to go in South Africa. The Corolla Hybrid proves this very well
Great review. For the price mentioned, doubt we will see any on the road. Manufacturers need to make electric cars smaller, meaning every work day, the roads are full of cars with only 1 person in it. Home - work commute should be single seater cars.
I can't imagine the horror of getting into your car in the morning only to realise it didn't charge because you didn't plug in the cable correctly, or you just plain forgot to charge it overnight.
Exactly bro. That's my issues aswell. I've forgotten to charge my phone many times and it's been a nightmare🤞😭😅
Yeah the instant torque is cool but there’s no theatre, no drama, no excitement, no noise! Nah ICE until these things are mandatory like those vaccines 🤣
ladies and gents the new AUDI X6
Every time I think of Electric cars in South Africa, I think of load shedding
Eskom is not a problem at all for electric cars. Loadshedding lasts about 2hrs at a time. You can use your car to light up your house during loadshedding then charge it after 2hrs of blackout.
Glad Audi is bring EVs to SA. One I would like to see is the MG ZS EV, which is a lot of car at a really good price. But in general we need more EV Chinese manufacturers.
You gain some weight bro. But nice test thank you :) qctually this car is garbage cause its just to heawy expensive and not that fastm Audi has a fantastic ev and its the e tron gt rs its fast great to look at great to drive.
So you can't drive on a road trip from Joburg to Durban which is +/- 700km on a single charge, in a country that currently no charging infrastructure???? It sounds pretty useless to me, despite it being much cheaper to run than conventional fuel.
Electric vehicles.. are they viable in South Africa with a lot of electrical power outages constantly by their provider Eskom. We all know it’s not going to get better … but worse?
Eskom is not a problem at all for electric cars. Loadshedding lasts about 2hrs at a time. You can use your car to light up your house during loadshedding then charge it after 2hrs of blackout.
The main issue with electric cars is the price. How many can afford a R2.5 million car? The price is absolutely prohibitive. BYD can provide more affordable options if govt can waive import duties EVs will be ubiquitous.
I don't charge my phone overnight, bad for battery life, I never charge my electronics fully.
Toyota needs to make an electric very capable hilux thats uncomplicated before Rivian expands to our market.
Bakkies Botha won't buy a Rivian lol bakkies will be here for another 20 years, small electric cars are the way to go for us.
Ford Ranger will come out with a hybrid soon. Not full EV but it’s a start. Avoiding diesel fumes in city traffic.
RS e-tron GT - R3 300 000 OMFG!!! Hmmm, I will wait for Tesla to arrive in SA. the Model 3 Base model will be more than practical and futuristic in every way then other brands.
😳😳😳😳R3.3 million????? 😭😭 that's bonkers. Seriously.
Looks expensive Ciro
the technology, battery types and infotainment are outdated throughout the VW concert. the only thing Audi can do is make a nice car. but all that you can't see is obsolete.
dont buy an electric car if you stay in PTA East, the day before you need to travel the Wapadrand substation will probably catch fire that night and it will take them 9 days to fix it, oh and this will happen every 4 month or so :(
An electric car is way too advance for me, uhmean where on earth will you get the parts of this vehicle after an unexpected breakdown lol🤣
The problem in SA is that you will park your eTron at a mall to charge and then the next eTron driver will pich, to also charge and there are no charging stations available, so he/she unplugs your car to charge theirs.
and do those charger cables lock? becoz thieves will just steal and resale🙈
I’m pretty sure the cables lock when you lock the car. I’ve seen it on Tesla, so I doubt it’ll be something overlooked on other cars.
Electric Cars No Problems whatsoever..........Eskom and loadshedding, power cuts not so sure about that one
Eskom is not a problem at all for electric cars. Loadshedding lasts about 2hrs at a time. You can use your car to light up your house during loadshedding then charge it after 2hrs of blackout.
Beiged, Ha ha ha..
As much as I love Audi's, this thing is just idiotic! -Trip from Cape Town to Pretoria would take 33 hours, if not more. (Thus, you can beat this stupid, "fast" Audi-appliance on this trip with the slowest bakkie on sale, an Isuzu Dmax 250c - with no turbo and a topspeed of 130km/h, LOL) And, once you arrive in the posh neighborhood in the east of Pretoria - you'll learn that it's been without power for a week now, due to a substation that exploded - and you cannot charge your fancy golf cart! -Even if this car's silly price gets reduced by 25% (due to government grants, reduced manufacturing costs, or for whatever reason) - its still a crap buy, compared to the cooler, faster and more practical ICE cars available. -And Ciro, you have to be honest in your reviews, and tell the people that they'll loose MEGA bucks on insane depreciation if they buy this toy... -I feel sorry for the "poor people" (cheapskates who buys a R2mil+ car, and go to shopping centers for a free charge) who's long term ownership "stories", would definitely contain a few very negative "memories". -I have driven an EV - the lack of sound sucks! (And dangerous if a human or animal don't hear you when hammering it, and step in front of the "sounds of silence on wheels") SA don't want this EV-rubbish, and proof would be social media comments that shows a 95% hate towards EV's...
I'd rather get a Porsche 911 Carrera cabriolet
BRILLIANT REVIEW ! WELL DONE 😃💪👌👏! NICE car too, BUT: Electric cars SHOULD be banned for now, & potenrially for another few decades, until proper e-tech was developed. Electric cars of today are EXTREMELY BAD for the environment, and it's existance require over 40% all round / NET MORE coal burn than ave IC cars 😨 Car manufactures should also be responsible towards the environment and, ar least, advise buyers about the down side of e-cars of the day, & DEFINATELY NOT advertise & sell them under the "environment friendly" - flag ! Thats SKELM 😨😣 OUCH 😕!
Lies
I don't care about the environment. I want them because low running costs.
EVs are not for me, if I want electric I will use g Gautrain
Using public transport also represents an excellent way of reducing your carbon footprint
NO RANGE NO NETWORK MORE LIES I own one and the range is pathetic
