  • When Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva was practicing the profound Prajna Paramita, he was enlightened by the fact that the Five Skandhas are truly empty, and he transcended all sufferings and hardships. Shariputra, forms do not differ from emptiness while emptiness does not differ from forms. All forms are emptiness and emptiness itself is forms. So, feelings, perceptions, impulses and consciousness are also the same.Shariputra, all dharmas are characterized by emptiness. There is no creation or termination, no contamination or immaculacy, no expansion or reduction.Therefore, emptiness holds no forms. There is no feelings, perceptions, impulses and consciousness; no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind; no sights, sounds, scents, tastes, touch and dharmas; No visual realm, even no realm of mind-consciousness; no avidya or end of avidya, even no aging and death or end of aging and death. There is no suffering, no accumulating, no extinction, no path; also no understanding and no acquiring, because nothing can be acquired. Bodhisattva, following the practice of Prajna Paramita, is unimpeded in his mind. There is no impediment, so there is no fear. Being distant from perverted desires, he achieved ultimate Nirvana. All Buddhas through the three periods of time, following the practice of Prajna Paramita, attained Anuttara- Samyak-Sambodhi. Hence, the Prajna Paramita is known as the great divine mantra, the great wise mantra, the supreme mantra and the mantra of no equals. It eliminates all sufferings. It is real truth and not illusion. This is why the mantra of Prajna Paramita has been delivered. Recite it like this: GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA!

      @TheGuiltsOfUs@TheGuiltsOfUs2 жыл бұрын
    • @@TheGuiltsOfUs In answer to your question: Sincere apologies if stating the obvious, but the OP in this thread is an English-language translation of the Heart Sutra, the Sanskrit version of which is being chanted/sung so beautifully in this video. The Heart Sutra is one of the foundation texts of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Early extant copies of the text date to ca. 650 (CE), and it is believed originally to have been committed to written form in India. (There is scholarship on both of these subjects, should you have the interest to follow up on the topics.) In addition, there is a traditional physical site (a rocky outcropping known as “Vulture’s Peak” according to Wikipedia) in India where the historic Buddha taught the Heart Sutra and the other Prajñāpāramitā (Heart of Wisdom - _see below_) sutras. Beyond its history, the significance of the Heart Sutra is… just enormous. I believe I recently read that there are more commentaries on this one sutra than on any other Buddhist text. This may be because, in spite of its brevity (there are actually two main versions, one slightly longer), the Heart Sutra is a comprehensive discussion of one of the Buddha’s core teachings: form vs. formlessness (aka emptiness or void). Vastly oversimplified, this means that all experience is empty. Everything being empty, therefore, a person is unimpeded - there are no obstacles. And from that insight & freedom, true wisdom may awaken and the individual attain Nirvana (followed generally by service to humanity as a Bodhisattva - we would call it optional if, at a certain point, the development of the heart of compassion did not so completely compel the enlightened to alleviate the suffering of all other sentient beings. Ain’t bliss grand? 😁) Perhaps because of its instructive power, the Heart Sutra is actually recited daily in various of the branches of Buddhism. If all this weren’t enough, it’s also good to know that “Heart Sutra” is just our English-language shortcut for its more accurate name, as mentioned above: the Heart of Wisdom Sutra - which, in turn, is also known to some as (had to check Wiki again for accuracy): The [Holy] Mother of all Buddhas Heart (Essence) of the Perfection of Wisdom. (There are also various “mid-size” titles in various languages, etc.) But even from the most basic level, the sutra _is_ very well-represented by that long-form title imho - insofar as it packs an abundance of treasure into a very close and extremely concise convergence. (Line by line commentaries will alert you to elegant conceptual shorthand used so often and well in the text that it could nearly be considered a motif in its own right.) You might well wish (especially by now) that I had that proficiency - to call up entire volumes of history and doctrine in a simple phrase - apologies. 😂😂 Finally a word on language: there are source documents for the Heart Sutra in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese and Japanese, I believe. The text has further been translated into countless other languages - including many, many translations into English. If you haven’t read Buddhist texts in translation before, you may be thinking, “What translation?!? Half of it is still in Sanskrit!!” Well, yes… that is traditional, I’m afraid. Sanskrit words that don’t have good English cognates - i.e., where English lacks words that are a good “match” in translation - are often left “as is” to prevent loss of meaning. It may sound difficult to look up terms constantly, but many will become familiar quite quickly. And if you’re really stymied by the language barrier, there are other translations out there that are more “anglicized” that should help. Finally, as the sutra clearly says, the closing mantra of Prajñā Pāramitā is considered to be of profound meaning and power. By no small few, it is even considered transformational. A truly useful discussion, though, is beyond the reach of even _this_ tl;dr comment, I’m afraid. 😂 However, if your interest legitimately leads you to that point down the line, then maybe you’d enjoy working with a good Buddhist teacher - there are more resources available than you’d immediately think should you decide to you wish to take refuge, for example, or even just develop a practice of your own. Well, I’m afraid that’s the best I can do for now; my apologies for any errors or omissions. I’m not certain whether or not this fulfills your request for evidence. Mostly, it is just background information, but I hope it is of some sort of help to you… Or if not, please reach out again and I - or hopefully someone better qualified - can get you some better-tailored answers. Until then, remember: All individual things pass away. Strive on, untiringly.

English: Oṃ Homage to the Glorious Noble Perfect Wisdom Homage to All-Knowledge The noble Avalokiteshvara ("the lord who looks down") bodhisattva while transversing the deep perfection of wisdom saw that all five aggregates were empty of inherent existence. “Listen Sariputra, form is emptiness; emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form; form is not other than emptiness. In the same way, feeling, discrimination, compositional factors, and consciousnesses are empty. Sariputra, in that way. all phenomena are empty, that is. without characteristic, unproduced, unceased, stainless, not stainless, undiminished, unfilled. Therefore, Sariputra, in emptiness, there is no form, no feeling, no discrimination, no compositional factors, no consciousness, no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind, no form, no sound, no odor, no taste, no object of touch, no phenomenon. There is no eye constituent, no mental constituent, up to and including no mental consciousness constituent. There is no ignorance, no extinction of ignorance, up to and including no aging and death and no extinction of aging and death. Similarly, there are no sufferings, no origins, no cessations, no paths, no exalted wisdom, no attainment, and also no non-attainment. Therefore, Sariputra, because Bodhisattvas have no attainment, they depend on and abide in the perfection of wisdom; because their minds are without obstructions, they are without fear. Having completely passed beyond all error they go to the completion of nirvana. All the Buddhas who abide in the three times have been fully awakened into unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment through relying on the perfection of wisdom. Therefore, the mantra of the perfection of wisdom is the mantra of great knowledge, the unsurpassed mantra, the mantra equal to the unequalled, the mantra that thoroughly pacifies all suffering. Because it is not false, it should be known to be true. The mantra of the perfection of wisdom is stated: Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā (means: gone, gone, gone beyond, gone far beyond, awakening, so be it!) [Based on Donald Lopez's scholarly translation]

My knowledge of Sanskrit is nothing worth speaking about although l tried very hard to learn the language immediately after my retirement in 2009. The song is BEAUTIFUL. Spiritually , it gives you a moment of tranquility and peace. Even though one may not know and understand the language, you can feel the singer enjoys her singing . Of course, you will have a more insightful understanding of the song if you have a knowledge of Sanskrit. Thanks. Drafted by W.K.Lo 此曲只應天上有 人間能得幾回聞

  • Had the world subscribed to Buddhist/Hindu faith - world today would be lot SAFE and PEACEFUL. This Sanskrit hymn detoxifies me physically, mentally. I love Bhutan, Tibet (I consider it a country with amazing people living in exile in India), Nepal (25 yrs back, unfortunately not any more), Japan

  • TRANSLATION BY THICH NHAT HANH The Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore Avalokiteshvara while practicing deeply with the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore, suddenly discovered that all of the five Skandhas are equally empty, and with this realisation he overcame all Ill-being. “Listen Sariputra, this Body itself is Emptiness and Emptiness itself is this Body. This Body is not other than Emptiness and Emptiness is not other than this Body. The same is true of Feelings, Perceptions, Mental Formations, and Consciousness. “Listen Sariputra, all phenomena bear the mark of Emptiness; their true nature is the nature of no Birth no Death, no Being no Non-being, no Defilement no Purity, no Increasing no Decreasing. “That is why in Emptiness, Body, Feelings, Perceptions, Mental Formations and Consciousness are not separate self entities. The Eighteen Realms of Phenomena which are the six Sense Organs, the six Sense Objects, and the six Consciousnesses are also not separate self entities. The Twelve Links of Interdependent Arising and their Extinction are also not separate self entities. Ill-being, the Causes of Ill-being, the End of Ill-being, the Path, insight and attainment, are also not separate self entities. Whoever can see this no longer needs anything to attain. Bodhisattvas who practice the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore see no more obstacles in their mind, and because there are no more obstacles in their mind, they can overcome all fear, destroy all wrong perceptions and realize Perfect Nirvana. “All Buddhas in the past, present and future by practicing the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore are all capable of attaining Authentic and Perfect Enlightenment. “Therefore Sariputra, it should be known that the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore is a Great Mantra, the most illuminating mantra, the highest mantra, a mantra beyond compare, the True Wisdom that has the power to put an end to all kinds of sufering. Therefore let us proclaim a mantra to praise the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore: Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha! Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha! Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha!” "The Insight that Brings us to the Other Shore” translation by Tich Nhat Hanh (2014) is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License
