I live in the US and would be delighted if someone wanted to use my house as a backdrop…especially for someone as sweet as Mia, Mama Mapes and her brother (father Mapes, too!) came to my door. I’d probably ask them to dinner besides! 🤣 I remember when I was 21 and married for one year, we bought a new 1968 Dodge Charger. My husband always wanted me to park the car farther out in the parking lot at the mall so it wouldn’t get dinged…lol! When I was coming out of the mall, after shopping one day, I saw a whole family standing next to our car getting ready to take a picture. I thought it was so cute that I stood back where they didn’t notice me because I didn’t want to embarrass them in any way. I’m only guessing but because the were a family from Mexico that had probably come to work at the peach ranches in our area, they probably wanted to take a picture to send back to their extended family in Mexico showing how well they were doing! I was happy to help them with that little deception! I didn’t own the car either…it took another 3 years of car payments to make it mine…lol!

Yep …we tried so hard to look older …sometimes to get into a bar or a club with no ID , other times just so we felt “more mature” ..lol..sometimes to get the attention of older guys 🥰 the hairstyles were so rigid and definitely different than girls the same age now , we really did look like we were 17 going on 45 in most pics
but yet they somehow look young at the same time??
I was born in the '80s and I feel this, I see photos of myself from the '80s at like 6-7 yrs old going, "I look like so old" and now I don't look as old HAHA! I'm kidding but even kids dressed weird, thanks, MOM!

“Don’t be alarmed if there’s smoke” is the essence of 80s hairstyling 😂. I ruined mine in a single year of trying to recreate it. Also that blue dress is the essence of my style and I love it.
Oh god i remember my sister syling her hair-i was born in 85 and she is ‘76, so she was graduati g highschool when i was in the 2nd grade. It wasnt the flip fringe as it was very early 90s, but it was the BIG curly hair with MASSIVE teased bangs. My sister has very thin hair that doesnt hold a curl without a gallon of product. She had to get a perm to help and she still had to curl a lot. You could see hairspray product all over the walls where she did her hair. She used to buy MASSIVE tubs of cheap gel, and the amount of hair spray was unreal. Her senior year photos were glorious early 90s, with hair three times the size of her head, and bangs that lifted like 5-6 inches above her head. By the time i was in highschool(graduated in 2003j, it was shifting to sleek pin straight hair. Meanwhile i actually HAD the think and naturally curly hair-it looked alot Elaine’s hair from the early seasons of Seinfield. I wouldve had awesome late 80s/early 90s hair! And without much work. Maybe i should grow my hair out (i keep most of it buzzed for less daily maintence) to see just how big i could get it now.. still wouldnt be highschool glory though as my hair is much less dense now that im newring my 40s. Would be tons of fun though!

I know right! My partner made this observation after seeing only one of her videos and I wasn't sure. But I think the fact that their personalities are so similar makes her seem so much more like her mum. After a while having the thought in my head I could see he was right!

I actually think Mia's mom looks younger in the photos, because her face looks chubbier, even though her body is slim. Most people are thrown off by the hairstyle from the 80's, which is why they think the mom looks older. I think Mia looks more like her father.
I feel like Mia should recreate her dad's pictures so we can get to the bottom of who she looks like the most. 😂

Idk why I'm crying rn😭 the relationship mia has with her mother is so beautiful. I don't have a good relationship with my mom and watching them doesn't even make me jealous. I just feel grateful for being able to witness such a beautiful relationship between a mother and daughter. I mean we're only seeing a small part of their relationship. But the way they interact is so heart warming. I had no idea who Mia was like a month ago and now I'm literally a momma maples stand lol. She seems like the nicest sweetest person EVER. She's always smiling and laughing, just having a good time. And she's always so supportive. This is the kind of relationship I dream of having with my possible future children
Mia - I'm a photographer and I can tell you, it's not so much that your faces are different, it's that her photos were done with a different lens. In the photography world, that makes a world of difference. Look up how focal length changes your face, or how different camera lenses change the face: on youtube, lots of people have very visual examples of different focal lengths!

I just wanted to point out since you commented on how different you guys look, and how disappointing you thought it was; The lens/perspective is very warped on the newer photos, so you look less alike because of it! Focal lengths will change pictures so much, and even change how the faces look. The older photo looks more compressed (it flattens the facial features more), while yours look more wide angle - that will make the facial features more prominent. Also wish you would have used flash to create the same look of the shadows in the photos! I think you guys look so much alike, so the camera used is what's tricking you.
do you have any advice on how to make photos taken on newer phones look like that older style?
@@laurathedino13 Not using a phone camera would likely help.(The focal length on a phone camera is between 5-50mm, depending. So all portrait photos will look distorted.) I'd say use any stand alone camera type with the lens set somewhere between 135-200mm. Edit: Pretty sure disposable cameras are still around, too. That would probably make for a fairly aged feel.
@@laurathedino13 It will be different from picture to picture depending on what look you want to achieve. The newer iPhones have Ultra Wide 13mm/Wide 25mm/Tele 52mm lenses. Usually portraits are taken at 50mm - 85mm, so using the 2x Tele lens on the iPhone would make the images look more similar to the ones in this video. If you look at 21:30 you'll see that there is a harsh shadow around Mama Maples arm, that's because of the on-camera flash. That's what lights her up and makes the background look darker. Same for 25:22 where you can see the flash is shooting straight at Mama Maples, while Mia's light source is coming from a higher point, making her shadow further down on the wall. Mia's shadow is also a lot softer than on the original. Other than that I would pay attention to the colors of the film the old picture has been shot with, all of these seem to have a very yellow/red tint, so matching that with editing would be important.
@@linnjeanette In my experience, even at 100mm there is still some level of facial distortion in portrait photos. I definitely would never recommend 50-85mm lenses for portraits unless the person is taking selfies or has limited resources.
yes! i would have loved for her to recreate these on film or an old point and shoot disposable but then it would be way harder to edit

Ah yeah, the quality was too high with the modern camera and it seems to de-emphasize the contrast between light and dark
maybe a disposable or film camera would've worked better too! disposables are pretty cheap so wouldn't waste that much film

Hi Mia, I‘m a professional photographer and I think it‘s great that you edit your own pictures! I‘m not done with the video yet but I just wanted to give you a tip: when you edit a picture, look at the crop more closely. In your recreation there was too much space ar the bottom of the pic and to little space up top. Look at where the head was in the original and then try to have the same placement in your image. Also you could look up a tutorial on how to bronze skin in photoshop (it‘s really easy!), then you could have come closer to your moms skin tone. Would be a good skill to have if you choose to recreate your moms pictures again :) but all in all very great work, you smashed the pose and the styling 😊👌
I have watched the whole video and I didn't think of this. I thought they were done really well, yet I just could not put my finger on the one thing that was off. But I think this makes a lot of sense. Because the pictures Mia was most proud of did get that 'crop' spot on! Thanks for adding this comment ☺
