Lyrics:
I've been a bad bad girl
I've been careless
With a delicate man
And it's a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
Don't you tell me to deny it
I've done wrong and
I want to
Suffer for my sins
I've come to you
'Cause I need
Guidance to be true
And I just don't know
Where I can begin
What I need is
A good defense
'Cause I'm feelin'
Like a criminal
And I need
To be redeemed
To the one
I've sinned against
Because he's all
I ever knew of love

  • I remember her winning an MTV award, and standing on that stage saying "this world is bull shit". I thought that was awesome. She meant the music industry, the front the stars put on for every one to see, it's all just a bunch of fake ass bull shit. She told the kids out there watching, not to try and be like them or dress like them, be yourself. Cause it's all just bull shit. People got mad at her for that. She became my hero.

One of my fav Fiona songs contains a thinspo slogan ‘hunger hurts but starving works’ ... I love her but yeah a lot of people knew, they just couldn’t talk about it. And that’s problematic because I feel many people, like the director of this video, saw it and exploited it because heroin chic was cool

  • Despite being less explicit than a lot of popular music videos today, I feel like the rawness of Criminal makes it hit a lot harder. The depiction of female sexuality here is really, really complex. There are moments of brazen seductiveness intercut with moments of total indifference to the camera intercut with moments of intense vulnerability. FA’s youth and her sickly thinness are both ever-present specters that suffuse the entire video, yet both are treated as merely incidental. And the way it’s filmed makes the whole thing feel simultaneously performative and deeply honest. IMO this video is provocative in the truest sense. Not in the sense that it’s meant to be titillating, but in the sense that it’s meant to make the viewer question what exactly they are watching and how exactly they feel about it.

Everybody knew to keep it classy around me and I rarely saw the sight of inappropriate stuff like nudity or drugs, but it was still fascinating for a small child. I've been to house parties that looked somewhat like this, down to the gross carpet, the jazzy music, the old eletronic paraphernalia and the outfits. My mother also used to have a striking similarity with Fiona back then, and watching this transports me to a time where I wasn't exactly at ease, but still felt safe. • History will treat Fiona Apple very well, as it already is beginning to. She is arguably one of the best artists of the mid-to-late 90s and and early 2000s, and was creating and producing music that still manages to sound unique and distinct, almost 20 years later. Get past the feet, barely clad bodies and the writhing about on the floor in underwear in the video and focus on her songwriting, singing and the fierce bass and piano underneath this song, and it would be hard to say that anyone has been able to replicate Fiona's sound. I was too young to experience her when she first hit the scene, but listening now, it's hard to not to be blown away. She released three amazing albums and was anything but a one-hit-wonder. She kept innovating and moving forward to her own sound and vision. Every single one of her albums were beautiful little masterpieces. I love her. Because she is one-of-a-kind. And her music was the same.

    • +Cassie Piper I cant speak for anything she has ever done besides this song and I never hear it on the radio so I wouldnt say history has been too kind to her. I think she went about upsetting the music industry which didn't help her much.

    • +Cassie Piper I agree. She was even to incorporate random piano keyboard banging into the song and made it sound great

  • I’ve discovered the joy of watching the music videos of the songs I know and love, songs that are a part of my soul, songs that have been etched on my heart for decades. It’s lovely and nostalgic, makes me love and appreciate the past -and solid music - with a new appreciation for the music by watching a time capsule music video I’ve never seen but always known. 💛

  • There's something so raw and real about the 90's. A time so unique that can't be replicated or manufactured like the 70s or 80s that are chock full of nostalgia bait nowadays.

    • OH boob, said like a child of the 90s that wants to ridicule every decade except his silly stupid decade. PS, it is an excellent song-absolutely like any you can take from any decade, but that doesn't make it any less of a fantastic, etc, song.

    • i dont know, back in the 90s this girl got hung and quartered for calling the entertainment industry "bullshit" which by todays standards would be either nothing or something that would gain her millions of fans. people dont get real like her because when she did back then they fucked up it. i dont think any decades been raw or real, but people did do a lot of coke and experimenting then lol.

    • @@davidwong656 That's pretty much my point. There is definitely a realness behind Fiona Apple's (and indeed many other artists of the time) music. Here it's presented in a Hollywood fashion, but Fiona rightfully pointed out that one should not take what's presented as real. The fact that nowadays all artists "keep it real" and get millions on their side just shows that it's being played into the game. Fake is the new real.

  • this song is literal magic, its a phenomenal song that i feel represents passion and love in general, the tenderness and the safety, the comfort of the touch of your loved one, the ups and downs, the fears and insecurities, and how it all fades away the second you're with them, its just a really personal song for me and thats what it makes me feel, it really helps me calm down when i feel a bit worse and cant be together with her, its just really important and meaningful to me, god sent song

    • It represents selfishness as she craves and loves to have a lot of fun but not only with the men she loves (her boyfriend that would be) and the guilt is chasing her mind, so she needs a "good defence", she needs "to come clean", to help her before she to atone, she needs to justify what she does, and thats why she feels like a criminal, cause shes playing with the feelings of her love because she craves sex. Thats why you see her with many people in the video
