As a D O T Official for more than 23 years, l have worked many accidents on a Major highway. The possibility of a secondary accident is very High. Traffic can and will back up very quickly, with much research it was determined that at Rush hour conditions traffic will back up at a rate of 1.5 to 2 miles every 3 minutes of time a lane is shut down on a 2 lane highway. I wish more States would adopt this policy. Hats off to Ron Pratt and His crew.......also to ALL that respond to these incidents.
As a motorist who has been in many similar backups, I for one appreciate the efforts you and law enforcement make to clear it as quickly as possible.
Heck yea! Essential for the Prevention of any further accidents that could threaten lives and property, on a hot day like that no one wants or needs to be sitting in traffic!
@@SemparoBeing Staionary on a mtorocycle for a long period in hot weather can be deadly. The lack of airflow makes you sweat like a pig, the engine heat starts cooking your calves. The engine itself starts getting hotter and hotter sure to lack of airflow through the radiator. It's hell on two wheels when held up for longer periods.
Only time I've ever been in a backup like this was when a truck rolled over and it's cargo (live chickens) escaped and started running around the freeway 😂😂😂

Reminder: don't just blindly pull over when you hear a siren! Find out where it is coming from, first.
ABSOLUTELY, i drive in one of the more congested cities in the uk and one of the biggest issues around emergency services is people witll either pretty much pull over... mostly... but both lanes are blocked, or stop dead and wait which usually has an even worse effect, few will actually stop and think
The siren means ‘get out to the way’ not ‘stop.’ I had a ambulance get stuck behind me once, a motorcycle (me) can not mount the curb easily, if at all.. I could not move over to let it past. so I sped up, so as not to slow it down. A short distance later i turned into a side road. Another occasion I saw the ambulance come towards me, so I did stop. This blocked the traffic behind me, and allowed the ambulance coming toward me to go the wrong way round some traffic islands, their side of the road was blocked by cars that had just ‘stopped.’
undercover cop. It’s really hard where it’s coming from it, took me a while because I was at a light. I just hear sirens. I have no clue where it was. All this time he was sitting at the light. And I was all a look around. Where is it?
at most you should stop right where you are(NEVER in an intersection or blocking side roads!) and pivot your head until you see/hear where it's coming from, then get out of the way if need be. and remember, there may be multiple coming the same way or from different directions! so after the first one passes, keep eyes and ears open instead of just jumping back into motion.
True. I was driving an engine responding to a car fire.. As we merged onto the three lane Interstate, the car ahead of me slammed on their brakes! Luckily I knew the next lane was open and I did a quick steering jerk into that lane.
Ron, as I understand what you have explained in the past, when you are asked to expedite, you expedite. No questions asked... as I can tell by the video, even the fastest expedites won't always clear the scene quickly enough. Stay safe AND hydrated. Also, that was a nice Dukes of Hazard entrance.
Ron it is not good the leave the snatch block on the cable all the time. I have seen it get Gaught and when it let's go it takes the rear window out of the tow truck. You do a good job . Keep up the good work.
The emergency response itself was well executed , however, something to keep in mind for future calls, when the ambulance is still on the scene, please don't pull up behind it and blow your air horn. The medic just might be performing an ALS procedure (starting an I.V., intubating, etc.) these procedures are difficult enough without being startled just as you were about to hit that elusive vein or pass a tube through the vocal cords. Not scolding, just something to keep in mind from a 32 year career paramedic.

This is an interesting and insightful perspective that I may not have thought of myself. My thought would have been if I’m behind an ambulance and I kick my PTO on, being right in front of my truck is loud, so my thought was patient comfort after being involved in an already stressful situation. Usually by the time I arrive on scene for our Police in Colorado, the medics are usually already off to the hospital.
Starting an IV is an ALS procedure?? 😅

WOW that SEMI even left you space right away...... what a professional driver...... thank you again for everything for everyone involved we need this positivity way more often on public roads. If I could I would push for this to become a national law change so all and in all states these law's to help and rescue should be nation wide so we actually can HELP the once which are in dire need. What a great job !!!!

I think the relationship you have built with the LEA in your area have also allowed you to run code more trusted that the slimy tow operators. There are companies and drivers around me that would abuse the ability to run code if it were even possible in our state. You don't when you shouldn't and you carefully do when you can.
As a truck driver that was nearly involved with a secondary accident in Arkansas that turned out was #2 of 4 secondary accidents I think all states should do this. Thank for all you do to keep traffic moving
Beyond a shadow of a doubt this should be the standard. Where I live is the busiest highway in North America but it can easily get backed up for hours at choke points. Tow trucks can run amber lights and nobody will care if your trying to get through traffic a bit quick, but also they get zero priority. Would get in the tow truck with my Stepdad and some call outs it's just like "We'll get there when we get there" because you can't do anything about the traffic.
Used to be with the volunteer fire department in my town.....driving a tanker truck though traffic wasnt always easy.......great job Ron ......😁

The UK could really learn a lesson about the need for rapidly clearing a scene of a "minor" bump to reduce the potential for secondary accidents.
Wouldn't be able to justify clean air zone charges if the traffic moved freely. They seem hell bent on jamming everything up by any means these days.
Neighbour here in the Netherlands.. since a few years our highways agency has been appointed as a national emergency service which means they can respond with blue lights and sirens to secure a scene and manage the incident area. Trucks aren’t allowed blue lights tho, yet they have certain exemptions that allow them to bypass traffic with amber lights allowed. Speed is super important, getting an area clear is priority no. 1 and it is always free for the persons involved.
The A/C went out in my truck this summer! When I was 25, A/C was a luxury. At 65 A/C is a necessity. Glad this proved not to be too big of a deal for all involved.
The 2 part videos *Tails Spin Turmoil* perfectly shows why getting out of there quickly is good. Three was a secondary crash on the other side of the freeway. While Ron and crew were working.
My Mom is a 92+ year old Senior and her Internal Thermostat has been Broken for a Long Time. The Weather we had across Missouri last week was Brutal & Deadly.🙏

As a tow truck driver from New Mexico, I think it is a good idea to have rapid response to prevent the possibility of fatal or serious injury to other motorists. We do not have that here!
Honestly I think that should be a law in every state as long as the tow company is certified to run a code 3
Ron does another fine job and quick clearing. As you have stated in the past, you take on added liability for Code responding. Every time I have seen you run Code, you stay focused and safe. Thank you for what you and your staff do.

Really wish expedited road clearance was a thing in more places, I understand needing to shutdown for a few hours for something serious but you guys are able to get there and clear the wreck in almost as much time as the ambulance which is usually first to leave especially on a minor wreck
As a Missouri driver thank you for what you do. For those who don't get it, MO interstates have lots of blind hills and curves so it's common to come around at 75-80 and have to drop to 15 in a few hundred yards. So many secondary accidents happen in those cases.
I was thinking you wouldn't even need to bother with hooking up the winch, but just drive the car up onto the deck. Nice fast recovery and scene clearance. And yes, rapid scene clearance is absolutely a thing: the longer the road is blocked, the higher the likelihood of a secondary - and that can easily be more severe than the original incident. Remember the recovery of the Ram towing the car and service truck on a trailer that went over the side of the embankment, and the secondary that happened then? That's why. I hope that the driver gets out of the hospital, gets a ride to your shop, and drives home in their car. Looks like it's completely driveable.
I'm guessing that using the winch was the fastest method of securing the car to the deck once loaded, and attaching it was easiest done at road level...
Not sure how it is in the US but using the winch here in Belgium is an extra fee. I assume it might be the same in the US: use of winch: $$$, use of crane: $$$, use of articulated deck iso the towing lift: $$$, etc... And certainly when the bill is being paid by an insurance company (like in accidents mostly will be the case), they add every little thing while when you call yourself and you have to pay yourself a good towing company will charge you the least amount they can charge. But if a 3rd party pays: +$$$$$$

A little quick recovery. I understand that regulations are going to be different in any one state and it could be a jurisdiction difference too. I think it is great that the state of Missouri allows for Emergency Response people to have the correct audio and visual cues that alerts the populace that they need to pay attention and be alert. (At least that is in theory) I have seen a few hundred drivers either ignore or who are blissfully ignorant of moving over a lane and slowing down.
The other part of the problem is auto manufacturers are making cars more and more quiet and less outside noise is getting into the car. Means less chance of a siren being heard until they're right on top of the driver. Add in people jamming to their favorite music and even less people will hear it.
@@dangerrangerlstc which is why a lot more Agencies are equipping their vehicles with Rumbler/Howler sirens so that way those low tones will hopefully pierce through the music and get a drivers attention

Always take heat seriously. We lost my beloved Brother in law to hyperthermia while on the Pacific Crest Trail. One day was 88 degrees, the next 109. He had a half gallon of water but no shade in the desert. 😢

In Florida the state police usually shut down all lanes in the one direction unless both directions are compromised. After first driving down in Florida we were all travelling on interstate 75 moving at a quick pace when all of sudden everyone had stopped and the reason for that was a car ran off the road, caught fire and split in half. Wildest wreck i had ever seen before. After living there for a few years I could see that happening. People there can't drive and i couldn't imagine some of them trying to drive in snow and ice.
I personally think it's the SMARTEST state law ever. Seriously.
Never once did I ever consider for a second that not only one day I would find a youtube channel of a tow truck driver with a gopro, but also that I would enjoy watching it. We certainly do live in a society.
Great video! Love seeing you in some of the rollbacks again, as much fun as the rotator jobs can be. A great throwback. I for one think rapid clearance is a great idea. You guys are trained in how to respond code, and towing really can be an emergency service in many situations. We've seen in previous videos great evidence of how important it is to get scenes cleared asap due to secondary crashes on both sides of the highway. I do wonder how the sliding arrow with the red, white, blue, and amber compares to just a solid flashing amber arrow. I feel like the second is much more recognized on the road and highly visible at all times of day. Didn't really matter in this situation due to the blockers but still something I think would be interesting to test (if you haven't already).
Ron I agree that expediting calls can help clear scenes a lot quicker and get traffic moving safely again. You always do a great job and I can see that the first responders have a ton of respect for you and your company. I love watching your guys work, I enjoy the ones that you and your guys run code. More cities and states should allow special tow trucks to run code like your state. I was wondering, do all tow company have the rights if called to run code or is it only certain tow companies. Is it hard for a tow company to get authorized to run code? Always stay safe out there and God bless all of you. Hopefully the lady is ok. Heat sucks, stay cool.

As a retired FF I know the importance of clearing a scene ASAP when on any major interstate or highway. I have seen simple one car incidents such as this turn into multicable injury accidents and in one case death due to traffic back ups. Those who disagree clearly have not ever worked at such calls or seen the trickle down effect of as even Ron has showed us here not to long ago a secondary accident happening with injuries.

Heat exhaustion no joke. When I was about 15-16, I was with a bunch of friends in a park on a super hot summer day. We were playing different games and stuff. At one point I was leaning on a fence, felt super nausious like I had to throw up and tired. I remember looking to see how far the bathroom was, started getting confused and tunnel vision. Next thing I know literally, I am laying down with my eyes closed. Wondering how I got into bed... Until I heard birds and people, I open my eyes and see a circle of people surrounding me. Apparently I just face planted (In the grass thankfully) and started convulsing. Super confusing for me and was scared when I woke up. Ambulance came, I just needed a minute, hydrated and got a ride home to sleep. I could only imagine if I was behind the wheel with something like that happening. Thank god she was going slow and the guard rail. She probably felt it coming on, didn't know what it was and just wanted to make it somewhere safe.
I had a job a few years ago that sent me to the E.R. It was extremely hot and we worked a semi crash on the interstate. I knew I was going to be in trouble when my hands started to cramp. I THOUGHT I was staying well-hydrated. Was I wrong. I had Mike drive the rotator back from the scene, because I didn't feel safe. We made it back to the shop and I just barely made it to my office before I collapsed and started cramping so bad it was like I was having a seizure. My daughter took me to the E.R. and we told them what was going on, but they kept thinking I was in an epileptic seizure. That's how bad I was cramping and shaking. I couldn't control it. When we finally convinced them I was severely dehydrated and heat exhausted, they gave me I.V. fluids and multiple shots of some kind of muscle relaxer before the cramps subsided. It was miserable. Since then, I stay well ahead of the loss of hydration. I don't ever want to be in that shape again. I use a combination of Liquid I.V., Pickle Juice shots, Pedialyte, and water per the advice of some EMT friends of mine, and, so, far, I haven't had another episode. @@RonPratt With me having congestive heart failure, my cardiologist says the same thing. I have to be constantly aware of what my body is doing, which isn't that easy for me to do. Interoception plays a factor with me where I am not always aware of what my body is doing.
Ron .. you do a great job ! I work for DOT and we get called out to block roads for accidents till they are cleared.. I know how fast traffic can back up and how impatient drivers can get .. Especially in hot temps.. Sometimes we will divert traffic to keep then moving.. Thank you for all you and the crew do!! God bless Brother!!

From being a long time viewer I can easily say yes the driver is okay. Ron does not release vids with fatalities so the driver is alive and likely recovered from the heatstroke.
Drove a wrecker for 25 years always loved when law said expedite this call pedal to the metal my company had the fastest ETA in the county!!! It was fun driving past the speed limit 😂!!!

The practice of allowing you to use red and blue lights makes perfect sense to me. I wonder how many of those folks stuck in the jam are locals who recognized your truck and let out a sigh of relief, thinking “Ron Pratt’s coming to the rescue!”? I know that I sure would. And you’re right about what heat can do to you. I had heatstroke once in Phoenix Arizona. Made darn sure not to let it happen again.

I think my favorite part of the video is the fact that the second sentence you spoke on scene was, "Is everybody alright?" A seemingly minor detail to many, but shows compassion that seems to be lacking on a larger scale these days. Keep up the great work, and stay safe out there.

I believe that truck has always had sirens.
Hi Ron, Love your video's! Just curious...why didn't they just drive the car off the freeway? It seemed in good enough shape to be done that way. Are there laws against that?
I suspect it's policy to protect the responders from claims of them causing damage or even taking stuff. The cameras Ron uses also have the proof of his actions to defend against those claims.
The driver was incapacitated, and police and fire aren't going to move the vehicle themselves unless it's completely intact, and often not even then.
Maybe there was noone available to do so?
While I can't directly answer that as I'm not a Missouri resident, what I can say is that beings the car was in a wreck, they may not know the extent of the damage. Let's say that Honda hit hard enough to break a ball joint, but it didn't appear there was anything wrong because the tire is against the guardrail, now an officer goes to move the car, backs it away from the guardrail, and the tire flops out, that would put liability on the officer/fire department.
Simply put.....insurance. the driver can if possible. But not others 😊
So i have so much respect for you yon and crew. Wreckers arent allowed to do sirens in my area. I get choked up seeing you respond code because the amount of care and respect you have for drivers while responding code is amazing. I know good an hell well that if i was in your area and needed a response it would be handled greatly.

Great video and explanation of the circumstances. Watching Heavy Rescue 401 on the Weather Channel, there was a big wreck, probably involving trucks. They showed rubberneckers slowing down and even stopping on the other side of the freeway, some to take pictures. It was chaos on the non-accident side of the freeway. Police had to yell at them to get going! That is in Canada, we don't have all the bad drivers here in the US!

Love how MO allows you to use the red & blues as well as siren. Wish all other states allowed the use of red & blues plus siren on recovery/ tow vehicles. Personally, I believe recovery/ tow vehicles should be in the emergency vehicle classification along with law, fire & ambulance. Growing up in the northeast, fire, law & ambulance are the only ones that are allowed the use of red & blues. I was some shocked to see in NM state DOT, utility & state survey crews running the red & blues. You see the lights ahead & believe there has been an accident so you move over to make room for them only to find out it's state DOT doing trash pick up along the side of the road. Yes, even if they used just amber lights they still deserve the move over laws.

You're about the only Tow Service I've ever seen that has Code 3 authority, but it really makes sense if you have emergency vehicle driver training and certification! Also, that little hand remote sure makes that job easier!

I was shocked when he hit the siren because tow trucks are definitely not allowed to use a siren or red or blue lights in Pennsylvania, only amber lights.
More states should adopt the code response for recovery vehicles, for exactly the reasons Ron explains. When law enforcement or fire agencies request it, the option should be available.
too many drivers would abuse it. they already abuse their yellows because people see flashing lights on a truck that isn't even responding to something and move over
That is a big negative.
In the places that don't have it directly, it's nearly universal that police could escort to make it happen. And that would prevent abuse by unscrupulous tow drivers.
