On 03 September 2021, The Modern War Institute at West Point hosted a multi-disciplinary panel to provide political, military, and humanitarian context about the American withdrawal from Afghanistan for all cadets, staff and faculty. The virtual panel featured the scholarship and practical experiences of MAJ Kyle Atwell (SOSH), Dr. Paul Miller (Georgetown), Dr. Jonathan Schroden (CNA), and Dr. Rachel Tecott (USNWC). A period for audience-led discussion and questions followed the panelist presentations.

  • Great panel! balanced and diverse viewpoints. Rich and lively discussion. Thanks as always. Would love to hear the viewpoints of historians as well, folks who can accurately assess the Vietnam comparison in detail, although this discussion did a nice job of that too. Mad respect to MAJ Kyle Atwell, most insightful commentator on the panel, hard to argue with his front line experience

  • It is essential to stop overthrowing governments and then claiming you are fighting an insurgency. No, the people you are fighting are NOT insurgents. Counter insurgency results from the support to an ALREADY friendly government that is under threat. Iraq and Afghanistan were not counter insurgencies. The Philippines is. Columbia is.

  • It's cultural more than political or organizational , though isn't it? Hearing -lack of commitment(not politically feasible and likely 9-11 was as close as we'll ever get again, the trust isn't there), small units, tempered expectations, proxies, failure of mirroring.....decentralization being hinted at. Maybe top-down isn't the way. What would that organizational diagram look like?

  • Upper echelons of both the Afghanistan military and government were extremely corrupt and upper echelons of US state department and military looked the other way & punched their tickets kicking can to the next guy/gal. No matter how great our intentions were, we were foreign outsiders.

    • Well Afghanistan isn't really a united nation per say at least that's not how the Afghans see it. Both Iraq and Afghanistan voted on purely ethnic divides. We wouldn't split the countries even the highly independent Kurds because that's not how Americans do things. But those cultures are not American and some of them have grudges that are older then the Taliban.

  • 15:55 sure but the art of war says a prolonged war is a terrible thing and wars should be won as quickly as possible. That said timelines are bad
