The Forbidden Kingdom: Mustang Adventure 🇳🇵
■ MARPHA, MUSTANG: Nepal, although geographically a rather tiny country perched up on the Himalayan plateau, sandwiched in between India and China, is still home to countless older Kingdoms. One of these is the ancient Kingdom of Mustang which dates back all the way to 1380 and wasn't fully merged into Nepal politically speaking before 2008.
Although it doesn't technically exist as a sovereign state anymore, and it's capital Lo Manthang was in Upper Mustang, it's borders extended past the little town of Marpha, whose ancient Thakali culture is very much alive today. Religion, customs, architecture and food have been remarkably well kept alive here in all its glory.
Some of the buildings in Marpha, although of modest construction, contain materials that are 400 years old. The city is also home to a Tibetan community which adds to the history on full display here.
All this is of course absolutely fantastic as international travellers are able to get a peak back in time as to what life, culture and architecture was like in the Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang hundreds of years ago.... and that was indeed my goal as I boarded my 14 seater airplane in Phokara bound for Jomsom.

You must visit Bhutan someday. It’s beautiful. Unique culture, unique everything!
@@davidpare8465😂😂she was shocked
Just seeing Apple Paradise, the owner Kombla comes across as so genuinely hospitable and so much love put into her shop. That alone, makes me want to visit Marpha, all the way from New Zealand. The architecture of the city is so beautiful, the streets so clean. Perhaps one of the most beautiful small towns shared with us on YT for many many years.
Her shop is awesome. Hope she gets more business so she can continue as she’s a huge asset to the community and potentially a giant draw for tourism to Marpha
also don't forget about Mandala Gift shop bro
Yep, Kamala didi is awesome.
I went in this beautiful place 2010. It looks like desert with surrounded by mountains . It was incredible and memorable moments.
Yes very nice and communicative lady Kombla! Knows how to do bussiness!!👍🙏
Fucking loving this Nepal series mate, you're killing it dude.
Appreciate that especially from a subscriber of 5 years 🙏🏻
@@HaraldBaldr Agreed, all your series are absolutely awesome. Can you please tell me how long I have been a subscriber, I would guess 2-3 years?
The woman who runs the business is very impressive. Smart, adaptable, and truly hospitable. Everything was neatly displayed. Tourism is the key for them and they don't disappoint. Hareld, you also continue to not disappoint.
Thank you for visiting Nepal. We always extend a warm welcome to you in Nepal🇳🇵.
🙏🏻
Wow she explained so well about their community
Yeah she’s a fountain of wisdom. Wish I’d filmed every conversation with her. She’s got so much to tell
Never in my life i have had any interest to travel Nepal before the first Nepal videos you made. Peru has been the #1 in my bucket list, but now my mind is changing. Seems the rougher the place, the more friendly people. Thank you Chinaman!
it's true that the rougher/poorer the place the friendlier the people are. And they are willing to accept you as a guest really quickly. Only place that this doesen't apply is Brazil. Go to a rough area there and you get robbed in seconds... if unlucky even killed
Nepal is much safer than Peru.
@kushalrijal9453 Safer? Bro Its heaven compared to Peru.
try sri lanka as well
People of Nepal are 0% hostile 100% Placid. People are so calm and loving.
Nepal should give you free visa and permit to all area, you are contributing a lot to Nepal tourism, more than Nepal tourism ministry 🙏🙏
That’d be a dream. I don’t need anything free but I would indeed like to see more of mustang and also Dolpho

Literally would watch like a 5 hour uncut version of your Nepal adventure. Your last one was my favourite series of yours of all time and this is up there right beside it.
Everytime you go up into the Himalayas it is soo unique, everyone is so wholesome and really just amazing content. Seeing the lives of these very down to earth people that are so happy where they are.
I have to say, that local government "Leader" option was making sense. They just use a very basic common sense to choose their community leaders and avoid conflicts which was very impressive and inclusive.
Thought the same when she explained it. Was very intriguing to hear
Like a homeowners association without the Karens making trouble.. real teamwork!
I loved hearing about this and the rules they have in place to better their community. Especially how they make sure the forest is used sustainably.
Genius, and evidence of an ancient culture.
42:28 One of the most wholesome interactions of the entire trek🤣❤️
Thank you for supporting local business ❤❤ Love from Nepal ♥️♥️🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵
I love these Nepal adventures, such a beautiful land and people. Its such a shame that the Government make it so difficult and seemingly expensive for solo adventurers like yourself.
Nepal have huge potential to attract millions of tourists each year. But the government is doing whatever it can to prevent that
@@HaraldBaldr Dont u think thats one of the main reasons it stays how it is though? I mean sure million of tourists each year would be great but then the population starts getting mixed and u lose that magic of the place with its traditions and so on .
@@ruthlesstiger21x76 Surely there is a workable middle ground the improves access to travelers and preserves the beauty and customs of the local population? A common theme keeps popping up in these Nepal videos, the local businesses etc are really struggling due to reduced tourism/hikers.
@@user-ew9gt3dg8x "Over tourism can also ruin places and permanently alter the culture" - When you are one of the absolute poorest (and also clearly grossly mismanaged) countries in the world... 'over tourism' should be the least of your worries 🤦🏼♂ Let people earn a living, tourism grow and develop the country. Then we can talk about undesirable cultural changes (if there are any) down the line when people have proper salaries and living standards. Just my two cents as a foreigner who obviously don't know very much about Nepal other than what I've seen on my travels.

Beautiful! Thank you very much for sharing with us 🙏
37:49 Mustang became a part of modern Nepal in the 1700s, when King Prithvi Narayan Shah initiated his military campaign resulting in modern day Nepal. During the campaign, some kings who peacefully agreed to come under his kingdom of Gorkha were given special local rights, whereby they could rule locally as king, but the kingdom itself would be part of Nepal politically. When Nepal became a republic in 2008 and the Nepalese monarchy proper was abolished, the last surviving mini-kingdom within the larger Nepali kingdom was also abolished.
Before that Mustang was part of the Tibetan kingdom and thus, so much of its language, culture and religion are akin to western Tibet. In fact, the present king of Nepal is a descendent of Tibet’s King Songtsen Gampo.

What an absolutely stunning village, and the woman from Paradise Apple was so amazingly sweet !!! Such a great video, Harald !!! What a truly amazing experience.
Another masterpiece Harald, it’s amazing how much quality content and interesting interactions you can creat in a continuous shot all spontaneously as if you plan out every minute of it beforehand.
Yes. He has a natural socialising ability. Blessed by Rati Devi 😂
anyways, the conversation you had with the drunk local guys was fun to watch.😂
What an amazing piece of the planet! Incredible warm and genuine people too. Makes me miss my time in Nepal…great video again Haraldo!
Great video Harald! Thank you 🙏 Beautifull place !! 🥰
I can't stop watching this videos. So simple, no video edit, no special effects. Just what I need after a hard work day! Thanks, Harald! If you'll stop someday in Tbilisi, I'd be more than happy to give ya a tour around for free!
You have the best adventure channel on KZhead. I love the way you seem to have no fear about getting into the real deal of each place you travel.
Harald is such a legend… he goes deep down his limitation to explore the world that only few has been and had experienced … I wouldn’t be surprise if he goes on top of Everest by himself from different route that has never been taken …
This is not as remote as you think, it's on the "Annapurna Trail" (200km trek) which travelers have been visiting for over 50 years. I was in Jomson and Marpha while doing the trek about 12 years ago, so walking there rather than flying.
He's a KZhead trendsetter. I always see other KZheadrs coping him.
Just because he's a KZheadr doesn't mean he's the first to explore these kinds of places. I've been there myself, I did an 8 stage race in the Mustang region in 2017.
Another great video Harald! Thank you!
What I like the most about your videos and the reason you are my favorite youtuber is that you film things you genuinely like to do and not only to have content. Cheers Harald ✌🏽
I cannot thank you enough Harald for ALL your travel vlogs. You were my saviour in the time of Covid thinking one day when the world is open I will go off to all those places. Even though I haven't gone that far (friend with cancer needed support) I would look at my small trips through Harald's eyes. Even my own town is more interesting. The trips to London for work & talking to my cab drivers from all corners of the globe opening up the world, their lives, their food, their homelands. Thanks again for a fantastic view of a beautiful location.
Thanks for all your videos Harald. You show us some amazing places and people. Från en granne i Sverige.

Her explanation of the workings of the community is pure gold ! And you struck more gold with that Thakali Thali. I would've loved to know the names of the dishes. The ghee she put on the rice is simply clarified butter.
