  • Numbers are slipping because everyone is watching third-party illegal streams of the shows instead of watching them on TV or buying the PPV. Even 4 or 5 years ago this was completely implausible, but with the rise of platforms like Netflix and Twitch we've become a streaming society. PPV is outdated, cords are being cut- UFC has a very young demographic compared to other sports, which is great, except young people are technologically literate and know where to get these free streams, and they can't afford fight pass + a cable subscription + 12 fucking PPVs a year. More people are watching UFC than ever by FAR, but also a very very large amount of them are watching it outside the UFC's distribution platforms. UFC needs to find a way to get on this train, like partnering with Netflix, because this is only going to get exponentially worse for the UFC every day even while their audience grows.

    @gg2fan@gg2fan6 жыл бұрын
    • Skylitze exactly. I keep hearing people talk about MMA and UFC numbers being down yet I know more people than ever before talking about MMA. Most people just can’t afford all those pay per views so they order two or three a year at most. And try illegally streaming the rest, if not, all.

  • The only problem is that Overeem is getting a bad wrap over this because he isn’t even complaining about anything at all. The media created this myth that Overeem is upset about not being in the main card. He said on the MMAhour that he’s happy with where he is on the card and he’s happy to have his fight done earlier so he can enjoy the rest of the fight card.

  • Overeem received a lot of crap because of something relating to this subject when a reporter brought up during the post fight conference last week that Overeem was vocal about being angry that he's on the prelims. When in reality he said in an interview with Ariel that it's not a bad thing to be on a PPV prelim card because the fight will be seen by more viewers due to being free on TV instead of a limited number of paying viewers.

If you take the time to put yourself out there, to struggle, to grind, then you are giving yourself the chances to succeed. And sometimes, whether it by correlation or coincidence, more opportunities fall in your lap. Keep up the bad work, bad guy ;)

  • Bring something to the table, the promotion doesn't owe you nothing. Just keep winning, do wwe shit, it's hard because you need to have something rare in order for people to be interested in you and most people that are under promoted don't have that, fans aren't drawn to those fighters. Also being good at talking, talking shit, being witty helps

He doesn't even care if he comes across as xenophobic, racist, "the bad guy", etc. That's what's so sad. No one even knows him, but the want him to lose just because they hate him. Plus they don't just hate what he says, they basically hate the cringe worthy way in which he talks trash, which is noticeably forced and childish. If he loses her may not have another gimmick to fall back on.

    • michael thomas . I said xenophobic because he purposefully called all Brazilian people filthy animals..... Didn't want to use the term "racist" because Brazilians are such a diverse group and can't be lumped into a single race. But he isn't that talented, and has leap frogged the actual talent in the division. I mean he got tagged in a striking battle against Damien Maia.... Nuff said.

  • I think the best current example of what Chael is laying out here is Dwayne Johnson, before the Rock you can look at Michael Jordan, Shaq, and Hulk Hogan. And then there is the granddaddy of all crossover athletes Arnold Schwarzenegger. What's interesting is that Sugar Ray Leonard set that template back in the 70's and that's why he was the template for Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies. And Sugar Ray took that playbook from Muhammad Ali, Joe DiMaggio, and Babe Ruth. The more things change man, the more they stay the same. Connor is at that cusp but could easily go the road of a Goldberg (most popular for a time bit defined by their role in that sport) or sadly a Dennis Rodman (infamous despite their sport) specifically outside of the sport itself.

  • chael is dropping some knowledge here. Bisping is one of the best examples of using the media attention well as in his long career he's always headlining cards . Not many fighters after a close fight with leites would get silva in their home country. Fighters that may never win a belt or stay top 15 like perry, lobov, caceres, felder and bochniak will be able to to make a good living on the prelims because they are fun to watch and have exposure to the fans.

  • I agree with Chael and offer this comparison. Gene Stallings won a national Championship at Alabama in football in 1992. Years later he was out basically because he won with defense and not turning the ball over. Apparently according to some ignorant van it was fun to win a National Championship but could have been a lot more fun if we were rolling over teens with gigantic offense like the Miami Hurricanes used to. And I agree with Chael Sonnen even though I think it's cigarette because cannot stand on the Merritt that the best team or best fighter is who Rises to the top in the longevity of your sport is in question. And the UFC has always and still does look shaky when you have to wonder or when you begin wondering how long they will be around. You're not always going to have a Conor McGregor or a Ronda Rousey and you have to survive based on a deep talent pool and not just surviving because of a bunch of characters

  • What about Zabit? No media, a few underground commentators predict him as the second coming, he gets a fluke spot on a main card, wins one fight, and he’s the next big thing.

  • Chael is very on point here. Everone blames Dana for not promoting their favorite fighters enough, etc. While this may have been true in some cases like Rhonda Vs Nunes, after Nunes beat Rhonda, it's her opportunity to fire up that machine and run with it. Promote the hell out of yourself. Conor did this best of all so far. Colby is doing it now, although people are hating him more than liking him so it could backfire the moment he loses a fight. The Diaz Brothers are another perfect example. Nate was bare over 500 when he landed the Conor fight that changed his life and the entire game forever. But he promoted himself as a fan fav, and never had to win a belt to do it. It's all in how you handle yourself and promote yourself. It's the age of the internet and social media. Fighters can promote themselves easier than ever before in history. It's up to them.

    • Dana is trash. Ronda was never articulate or that appealing but they pushed the fuck out of her and created this invincible persona. Nate was not barely over 500 he was 18-10 and has been a fan favorite for a long time.

    • I don't disagree about Nate. I really like the Diaz Bros. But 18-10 is considered barely over 500. If he was 20-10 at the time, then there's an argument, but those two fights difference are a big deal in this sport where almost no one goes undefeated. I feel Nate should have had a better record but got robbed in one or two decisions, same with his brother. His brother has a much better record though.

  • regarding overeem, when asked about being on the undercard he was not concerned about it. he sees the pros and cons and knows the company has reasons for it.

  • Mousasi is one of my favorite fighters, but this talk applies to him. He never got a title shot while being one of the best, and it all came down to him losing the wrong fights. If he had stayed for another 3 or 5 years he would have been champion for sure (with the right PR). I do understand he made the jump to Bellator because he could earn more money without the Reebok Deal. But from a competitive point of view, would have loved to see him fight Rockhold, Romero and Whittaker. However Rory, Lima, Daley and perhaps MVP are interesting opponents too.

  • Tom brady was a 6th round draft pick underrated and under promoted i only knew so much about him cuz he went to michigan and that was my fave school but look at what that man did with his career he is the GOAT period no debate so fighters should look at that put the chip on there shoulder and use that to motivate them cuz whether you promoted or not if you WIN THE FIGHT they book you again whether they want to or not

  • This is true some of the greatest fighters are not necessarily the biggest fighters cause of the lack of fan connection. Go to the fans first.
