SUNMI releases the first single title track ‘Heroine’ in 2018, who has positioned herself as a unique female solo artist.
SUNMI’s ‘Heroine’ is a single title track released in five months after her solo comeback song ‘Gashina’, which was released in three years after disbanding and caused a ‘SUNMI’ syndrome last night, as a prequel of ‘Gashina’. The main theme of ‘Heroine’ is ‘a flower locked in ice’, describing the earlier story of ‘Gashina’ in which the woman had to accept the sad breakup by saying ‘Why do you leave behind pretty me?’ to herself. This track delicately describes the woman’s frozen heart with SUNMI’s sensibility, who gets hurt by the lopsided relationship with the person she loves but tries to understand the person.

I revisit this song a lot lately, and couldn’t help notice that she’s actually singing this to herself. There’s no men or boyfriend or lover. Just Sunmi and herself, empowering herself to express all emotions to the world. To keep persuing love even if sometimes it lead to sad ending. This world is a show for both side of herself, the pessimistic and optimistic, embodied in one person. She is the hero and heroine. We are our own hero/heroine and The Show must go on indeed.

this was such a comfort song to me at the time of jonghyun's death. jonghyun was like my hero, so i just feel a personal connection with the song. now i connect the song to sad times, so its a bit hard to listen to, but i do listen to it pretty often. "the show must go on". jonghyun had really helped me out of my depression, so him passing was really hard on me, but this song helped me get through it all. sunmi's my heroine

*My theory on Heroine* : The description box says that this is the prequel of Gashina. The fact that she keeps saying that the guy is "the real hero of the drama" but the song title is "Heroine", to me means like she's saying "In the drama with the two of us, you're the Hero but I'll be the Heroine of my own". She even insists that she wants him to do how he likes and not change himself for her, Even if she's hurt, "the show must go on". I don't think this means that she'll stay with him despite him hurting her, what she's really saying is that even if they're not together anymore, they must keep going on. (Just like how she keeps moving forward in Gashina). Sunmi's songs just have so much maturity, self-confidence and sarcasm, she's totally unique and I love her for it. In conclusion, Sunmi has me totally shook and she's absolutely the Heroine of everything right now.

Exactly one year ago my mother became extremely sick and I had to take up all the household responsibilities. I had to go to school, prepare lunch for my sister, mother and myself and make sure the house was running. I did so with very little help. Every morning when I woke up I felt like finishing myself. One morning it was particularly bad and I had put on a random k-pop playlist to wake up myself, this song came and when "you must go on" came up I nearly started crying. But her song made me continue, mum's still sick, I'm still struggling through school but I'm still here. Edit: thank you everyone for your kind words. Your support means a lot to me. My mother is much better now, and we're all doing quite well these days.

i think the difference between Sunmi's song vs all the other samplings you mentioned is that they made it into their own, so much so that one wouldn't even know that the song is sampled. I didn't even know Cheryl sampled Kaci and jojo and I loved and listened to both songs. I'm not really mad or anything abt the sampling it just surprised me a lot that it sounds very similar fight for this love that's all.

my interpretation of this song is, all in all, a sarcasm. "You're a hero" seems like sarcasm, since she despise him, but wanting to not hate him by saying, "just be yourself". This song maybe also has a meaning of becoming mature, letting go and forgetting instead of resenting someone that will only lead to hurt yourself too Sunmi refers her ex-lover as a hero, which is also a sarcasm, cuz the title of this song "heroine". Sunmi is the real hero of her heart and love life. She saves herself from toxic relationship by maturing. I don't know if this makes sense, just a "theory" of mine. lol
i felt something similar. what i felt specifically was that she was pointing out that the dude was aware that his actions were going to hurt her and he still went through with them because that was what he found convenient even at the expense of her, so he's a hero for himself and she's a heroine for herself. i didnt feel necessarily that her saying "you gotta be you, the show must go on" is her actually encouraging him, i dont feel like they ended on good terms -i feel more like thats what her way of saying "even until the end you did whatever the fuck you wanted so really why did i even bother". but that might also just be my interpretation based on personal experience lmao
I agree with your interpretation! That's also what I thought after the first play. I also thinks that this song is secuel of Gashina. In Gashina she just broke up with her bf. She was really angry, hurtful, and didnt understand why she was treated badly by her then bf. Then after the time goes by, she became more mature and realized that broke up with him is the best thing that could happened to her because she save herself from toxic person and toxic relationship. To me, Gashina and Heroine are the song that potrays the phases that a lot people gone through after they broke up with their lovers
i see where you're coming from, but the description here on this channel says it's actually a prequel to gashina, and not a sequel. and i can see that, tbh. i think heroine takes place during the breakup, when she's coming to terms with like "okay, so this is how things are and these are your priorities and im gonna have to prepare to move on". whereas afterwards, in gashina, she is for sure angry, but her stance is also pretty strong- like "you were the fool who had his priorities messed up and you lost something amazing and now im gonna thrive with or without you". i agree that they're different phases in the end of a relationship, but the order seems to be herioine-gashina, and not the other way around as one would think judging by the release dates

Im kind of person who would sang 'gashina' when i just broke up, but then after a while i would sang 'heroine' because i realized that im so much better without him
yeah i get that. to me it was kind of the opposite also because of personal experience, to me the biggest step was realizing i deserve better and hence break up (heroine) and then once it happened be like "lmao youre dumb i was so good to you". but i guess that could also depend on the breakup itself -my own was very similar to what heroine describes (the person i was with preferred doing their own thing even if that meant id end up hurt) so thats just how i vibe with it i guess. all up to interpetation regardless of the way its made i guess

@@lenadesu2544 For me even if it is disguised as a love song, I believe it actually treats about kpop artists in korea and the fact they have no free will, their labels push them to the limits (tough diets, a few time to rest, beauty standards ..) so much that even when they are on the verge of exhaustion it is not that important in the long run and "the show must go on".
