  • I was a young guy in a rock band when I saw this. Our drummer showed up late for a practice one afternoon. Sorry to be late because he had just seen this movie. He was too messed up to practice because of this movie. He told us it was the most terrifying thing he had ever seen. He insisted we skipped practice so the bass player and me could go see it. We thought we'd give it a shot. Nothing could be that scary. Before we left, he gave us a couple of fatties and told us to smoke them before the movie. We walked into the theater totally fried. It would have been bad enough without being wrecked, but I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. When we walked out of the theater, we looked at each other and agreed that it was NOT fun, or entertaining. Just over the edge horrifying. He looked at me and said, "Let's kill him." I thought it would be justified, but we didn't. It was a long time before we forgave him.

  • Mary Selway's casting choices on Alien were SO perfect: Sigourney turned out to be this incredibly tough, cool female lead and still the greatest 'strong female' character ever written; Tom Skerritt has that 'good guy but still a bit of an arsehole' vibe as Dallas; Yaphet and Harry brought a comedic element and had a great antagonistic relationship with the other characteristics; Veronica perfectly captures how terrifying the situation would be if we were in it; John is obviously very natural, as he is in all his films; Ian is just plain disturbing from start to finish. Easily in my top 5 films of all time!

But you can really see the structure of the movie in his script, it’s just all the dialogue is kinda weak, it’s not bad but, Walter hill clearly vastly improved the dialogue. But yes obannon is not appreciated as he should be. I mean he did return of the living dead!

If you read both scripts, the dialogue wasnt amazing in either and changed dramatically by the actors adlibbing, but the basic story beats and the skeleton of the film all came from O'Bannon's script. He maybe pretentious in some interviews, but his script sure wasnt pretentious, and they tried to steal his writing credits which happens all the time in Hollywood by Giler-types. Not to mention Dan was the one who suggested Giger to Ridley Scott, brought in Cobb and Foss to work on the spaceships designs, without him we would have gotten a much different(and undoubtedly inferior) film.

I could have sworn that there were some parts missing with the cast, like where Veronica Cartwright said she was originally cast as Ripley and Sigourney Weaver thought she was allergic to cats at first. And then story and production details the moments when they decided to make Ripley a woman because the script was originally written as all men, how they used children for the shot with the space jockey, and that was part of the reason the budget doubled. EDIT: After some digging, another channel posted the doc in 2 parts, and it appears that almost 23 minutes is cut out of this one. • A lot of the psychological power of Alien comes from the SFX constraints - but it suffers from them too, like when the chestburster skitters away and it looks like a kid's toy. Then you watch Covenant, and you know it's written *for* CGI, knowing they can show you anything, and they do; yet it's completely uncompelling. You need writing like in the old days, when the CGI crutch wasn't there and they had to think about how to create that tension and fear and horror with a situation - and then when you do bring the CGI in, it should be subtle and restrained so it serves that rather than becoming the whole point.

The guy is a hack of the highest order, right up there with his buddy JarJar Abrams. Abrams at least isnt as pretentious as Lindelof, he knows hes making action schlock most of the time and shoots it accordingly. Lindelof thinks hes the Heinlein of modern script and screenplay writers, but he usually has a surface level understanding of the subjects and themes hes trying to portray in a high brow manner. It just makes for dumb movies full of awful tropes and plotholes, when hes not completely undermining the movie or the entire franchise. Keep him far away from any future Sci Fi series that havent been ruined already, please god.

  • Why this is the greatest horror movie ever made - The pacing is perfect. The atmosphere is some of the greatest in film history, thanks to the astounding set design, music and use of sound. The actors portray terror more convincingly than in almost every if not every other horror movie. The alien looks great and is used just enough so it isn't over or under done. The "threat" goes through several alterations so you can't be sure and have to anticipate what it's next form will be (face hugger, chest buster, xenomorph) when in any other horror it'd just be one form throughout. It has not 1 but 2 heart pounding finales and a great "fake out" where you think it's finally all over. It has the best example ever of what they call a "strong female" lead, she doesn't feel forced and it's never worked better than here. It even has one of the more interesting directors cuts out there, deleted scenes, arguably the greatest sequel ever made and the best trailer of all time.

  • Alien was and still is the best alien film but in terms of sequel I think Aliens was the only really decent sequel to Alien. Watching how they made Alien is very clever because they didn't have the technology we have today so the way they made this was very clever and I never knew as a kid watching this film it was categorised as a horror even though it was very creepy. Alien will always remain a sci fi classic, a horror classic and one of the greatest films ever made. Sadly however the year is no longer 1979 and all the alien films done today look incredibly poor, tacky and just stupid compared to James Cameron and Ridley Scott's efforts back in the 70's and 80's. Director's of today just can't make them decent anymore and they've more technology than back then.

  • Nice behind the scenes documentary. However, the contributions of Shusett and O’Bannon to the final film are overstated. O’Bannon had a rough story outline up to the chest burster scene, an idea which Shusett came up with. O’Bannon falsely claims that 85% of the final movie was his story. Obviously he’s attempting to cement his legacy with the film. The entire screenplay was rewritten and the only elements that were kept was the distress call that brought the crew down to the planet, the facehugger and the chest burster. Everything else was not of their doing. O’Bannon was banned from viewing dailies and one month into filming in England Shusett was told to leave. He was not allowed on set any longer. This graphically demonstrates the lack of involvement these two ultimately had with the making of the movie. Also missing from this documentary is the design work of Dicken who designed and built the facehugger and infant alien. Giger and Dicken did not get along. Giger was ordered to work exclusively on the adult alien, Dicken would build the other two. But Giger felt he was more talented and the work should be his. Ridley Scott didn’t care for Giger’s sculptures and never used them. Read Rinzler’s book if you really want to know what happened during the making of Alien.
