    • Prior to Simone Biles, Shannon Miller was referred to as the Most Decorated American Gymnast. So I am confused why she is ranked #4. Behind Shannon should be Dominique Dawes. Everyone else can fight for the remaining placements. Aly Raisman should be 4th. Considering she went to two Olympics and earned two silver all around medals. Defending her titles, since Simone and Gabi stole the limelight. I don’t really have an opinion on Nastia, Mary Lou, Suni, or even Carly, Shawn Johnson. None of the aforementioned gymnast, made the significant impact the top gymnast made. Nice video. I love discussing gymnastics statistics.

    • @@jonperry1688 Shannon Miller’s silver AA medal in Barcelona should be a gold because the gymnast who “won” the gold failed to qualify but was able to compete because one of the Unified Team gymnasts that did qualify “withdrew because of an unspecified injury” 🧐 Nothing to see here.

    • @@callieking8860 A lot of people disagreed with her wins at the 93 and 94 worlds in the AA too, particularly 94, if you want to play that game. Those type of arguments can be done for any gymnast. Nastia did win the Olympic AA handily in 2008, even against much tougher competition than Shannon had, and many felt she was robbed of the bars gold that year, plus the World AA gold she lost in 2005 by only .001. So yeah you can say some think Shannon should have won in 92, but you can make those sort of arguments for almost all the top US gymnasts minus Simone as well.

    • @@Katigirl23 Except if you followed gymnastics back then that sort of thing happened all the time. The 85 world AA title was shared by not one but TWO gymnasts who didn't even qualify as top 3 for the Soviet team (due to falls in the team competition) but were both put in for teammates who were pulled. If you don't believe me look it up yourself and you will see I am right. Marinescu was pulled for Amanar for the All Around twice, and she medaled both times. Lysenko was pulled for Bogi in major AA events twice. The Romanians and East Germans did switches amongst teammates all the time. If you are going to use that argument you would have to discount about half the medals that took place those years. Gutsu was a far better gymnast than Galieva who only made it barely due to a fall from Gutsu, so the Soviets smartly swapped them out, as was normal those days anyway.

Nastia's floor routine looked sloppy as hell with her cowboy'ed saltos and her crossed legs during her layouts... yet they get the same score? Plus her legs always look bent to me. Then on beam the judges give her a connection bonus she didn't earn... even that dipshit Tim Daggett noticed! Anyways i just think Nastia does sloppy Gymnastics (she has some nice release skills on bars maybe but still sloppy). Shawn deserves a higher ratings as does Ali. • I agree with the choices (mostly), but not the ranking. Aly Raisman is way too low. In terms of world and Olympic medals, she’s the third most decorated American gymnast. And while Carly Patterson and Shawn Johnson were both great when they competed, they didn’t have the career longevity that Aly had. Raisman made two Olympic teams and medaled in both. Also, no disrespect to Mary Lou Retton, but she competed in a very weak era and only really had a breakthrough at one big meet. She won at a boycotted Olympics, and never won a single world championship medal of any color. Sorry, but while being the “first” to win an all-around title and putting American gymnastics on the map is something you can’t take away from her, that does not make her competitive of greatest American gymnasts. Additionally, I think that Shannon Miller has way more medals than Gabby Douglas ever got, so she should be ranked higher. Also, how does Chellsie Memmel not get even an honorable mention? 10. Chellsie Memmel 9. Dominique Dawes 8. Carly Patterson 7. Sunisa Lee 6. Shawn Johnson 5. Aly Raisman 4. Gabby Douglas 3. Nastia Liukin 2. Shannon Miller 1. Simone Biles I would have left Mary Lou off and added Chellsie TBH. Otherwise, good list - I think I mostly just disagree with the order.

    @captainbryce1@captainbryce1 Жыл бұрын
    • Why would you put Nastia over Gabby? Gabby has two Olympics to here name and more Olympic gold medals. You praised the longevity of Aly, correctly, but didnt dock Nastia for her inability to make two olympic teams and Gabbys ability to not only do so but also to do so and actually have a shot at winning another AA medal. She qualified in 4th and her qualified scores would have secured her the silver in the AA final if the US could have sent more than 2 athletes.

    • @@jonperry1688 Good question. So here is my reasoning, even though Gabby made a second Olympic team, she did not compete elite for most of that quad. She basically came back the year before the Olympics and made the team. And she was also not ranked for her entire run in her first quad either. Nastia was competitive throughout the entire 2005-2008 quad. Gabby was competitive in 2011-2012, and then again from 2015-2016. So really, she has about the same “active” longevity as Nastia has (about 4 years). Also, longevity is only one criteria used to judge “greatness”. And while it is important, there are other metrics which must be considered as well. If I were judging based SOLELY on longevity, then Dominique Dawes is the greatest American gymnast! She’s the only one to make 3 Olympics and she medaled in all of them. The only reason she’s not ranked higher on my list is because only 1 of her 4 Olympic medals is an individual medal, and she never won an all-around title. While it is true that Nastia failed to make a second Olympic team, you have to look at what she was able to accomplish when she competed. The reason I rank Nastia ahead of Gabby has to do with the overall number of medals she’s won, especially as an individual gymnast. Nastia won more medals at a single Olympics than Gabby did in two! Nastia won 5 medals in 2008, and 4 of them are individual medals. Gabby won 3 between the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, and only 1 is an individual medal. Moreover, the Olympics is not the only thing that counts. You also have to look at World Championships. Gabby has 3 world championships medals, including a silver all-around title. That’s impressive, but then Nastia also has a world all-around silver with a total of 9 medals. Six of her 9 medals are individual medals and 3 of them are gold. This means that she dominated most of her rivals in more events. When you look at total international medals, Nastia has 14 total (making her the 3rd most decorated American gymnast behind Biles and Miller). Gabby only has 6 at that level, and 4 of them are team medals. In my opinion that puts Nastia ahead of Gabby but by a significant margin.

    • @@wheresbaby7783 I agree, Aly was not the most “graceful” gymnast in terms of artistry. But she was one of the most consistent, and had a well enough choreographed routine to win an Olympic gold and silver on floor exercise. You could make the same argument for Jade Carey, but again - Olympic floor gold medalist! 🥇 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • I agree with the addition of Chellsie, but would also consider Zmeskal. I'd place Gabby lower and Aly and Shawn higher. Aly deserves praise for her role in the Nassar scandal, too, which is a service to the sport. And Chellsie for still sharing her passion for the sport and being active in it, even with no chance of adding to her medal collection.

    • I’m sorry?? When have you ever completed at the Olympic stage while being sexually abused and still came home with 5 medals?? When have you ever won a world championship while passing kidney stones?? When have you ever had 4 gymnastics skills names after you?? Simone biles doesn’t choke under pressure. Simone biles takes a step back when she needs too because she recognizes she’s a human first before a gymnast. After repeatedly being traumatized under the organization that you have won 25 gold medals for I think it’s okay if she takes a step back at one competition and say no someone else can take on the responsibility. Do you have a single ounce of empathy? It doesn’t take an expert to realize the about of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse these gymnasts went through all while earning gold medal after gold medal for the United States. There is SO MUCH Simone biles will be remembered for.

    • No, she won’t - because she didn’t “choke”. She withdrew due to safety concerns because she wasn’t capable of performing twisting elements at that time. She probably saved herself from serious injury and allowed her other team members to step up to ensure they’d earn a team medal. So it was the smart thing to do. And she came back after that to win a bronze on beam with an alternate routine. It’s kind of ridiculous to call it choking when you make calculated decisions which payoff and result in winning a team and individual medal. She’ll MOSTLY be remembered for being the GOAT, winning the most world titles of any other gymnast, and having introduced new moves and difficulty unprecedented before.

    • @@captainbryce1 holy crap you actually believed the twisting excuse? She later admitted she dropped out because of mental health issues, which are completely different from aerial orientation. She choked.

  • Ohashi got an honorable mention? Are you for real? She didn’t make a single world championship or Olympic team. How does she get an honorable mention over athletes like Kathy Johnson, Julianne McNamara, Kim zmeskal, chellsie memmel, jordyn wieber, and so many others. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

      @kershawa424@kershawa424 Жыл бұрын
    • @@kershawa424 no. She also lost to Ross at a tri-meet between the USA, Romania, and Germany (she lost some training camp competitions). Even if she was the only gymnast to beat biles. That is still not anywhere near good enough of a reason to give her honorable mentions as best American female gymnasts of all time over those I mentioned and many others.
