Fight Countdown to the Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia showdown that takes place on May 4th 2023.
The all-Mexican showdown, to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, will involve the undisputed super middleweight champion, Canelo, defending his four world title belts against Munguia - who has been knocking on the door for a shot at Canelo for some time.
Munguia, previously been a world champion at super-welterweight, became one of the top contenders of division after beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in one of the best fights of 2023. And in the early part of 2024, outshined Canelo's attempts against John Ryder by stopping the tough Briton in the 9th round.
This latest triumph put Munguia in the prime position to be selected by Canelo - who is constantly on the lookout for worthy opposition.
And though the boxing audience will have been hoping for a Canelo vs Benavidez showdown, the decision to instead clash with Munguia may deliver a more fan-friendly fight.

I do agree the narrator spoke with such eloquence and class that one might be inclined to overlook the mispronounciations as they were few and far between. However, I must disagree with his assertion that canelo is the face of boxing. Although there is an argument to be made there, his decline is noticeable and has opened room for that title to be bestowed upon others like Tank, or Bud Crawford. But I do concede that it is between those three at the moment.

What people fail to understand, is that Canelo, at his level, is quite an active champion. He can give you 2-3 fights a year. Not many at that level give you that many.

would've liked to see Munguia get a couple of fights under Freddie Roach before facing Canelo. I think Cotto was trained by Roach when he fought Canelo and did ok but the weight difference was too much. Cotto's brother wobbled Canelo in the second round , that was odd to see

@@ivaylopekachev3656 Canelo dropped the belts the first time Golovkin was his mandatory. Not fighting other Mexican boxers is the reason why some people in Mexico never warmed to him. Barrera-Morales benefited from fighting each other and Canelo never had that, only GGG but he waited until he was old. And I know Canelo is so much better, but give me boxers like Pitbull Cruz, who gives spirited fights.
Munguia is bigger than Canelo and has more natural power as well. We'll see what happens.

That fight got signed within a year and it could've been done earlier but GGG was rejecting a career high 8 figure guarantee while holding out for the larger purse. The talk of GGG being old is nothing but revisionism when he was a late bloomer who was the hyped up undefeated favorite career middleweight who many thought would destroy Canelo who was fighting above 155 for only the second time. GGG was still the favorite in the rematch when Canelo changed up his style and beat GGG at his own game. Pitbull gives spirited fights unlike Canelo? Canelo's opponents are the ones reluctant to let their hands go against him when he gets his offense going because he's more than just a puncher, he's also an excellent counterpuncher and sets up traps, applying physical as well as mental pressure on guys.

I kind of miss the old Canelo. The more slick moving boxer, but I guess age has something to do with it.
I noticed in the Saunders fight even though Canelo won that fight. I noticed Canelo was relying more on brute force rather than the slick skills we seen against Jacobs for instance. When Canelo fought Ryder I thought the same thing,we don't see that great defense anymore
He has said it himself going up to 168 fore his stature is still a lot of weight so he can’t be throwing a lot of punches like he used to cuz he would gas out quicker. But his punch accuracy and power make up for it. It’s like Mayweather when he was at 130-135 he would be knocking out people throwing 8-10 punch combos but than when he went to the heavier weight classes of 147-154 he had to change his tactics to be able to beat those bigger guys. You’re not always gonna fight the same way and it’s crazy to think that.

He walked charlo down all night and basically beat him up.. mungia fight is actually a good fight, because Jaime stopped Ryder and put a beating even worse than Canelo, Benavides couldn’t stop plant and lost like 6 rounds to plant. Jaime vs Canelo is basically like Tank vs Frank but to compare it’s like Frank Martin coming off a KO win vs pitbull Cruz ( a guy who took tank the distance). So Jaime is a more accomplished fighter than Frank and to be fair he’s actually a very big name in MX he just doesn’t have the status like Canelo in the states but mungia was gonna fight Canelo one way or the other down the line.. the Benavidez fight might happen soon and when Canelo beats him everyone’s gonna go back to their caves

Morrell and Berlanga are good fights for Munguia but he feels he's done more to deserve that unification chance. I mean having 40 something fights should be more than enough to get you in that position.

It’s just jealousy and hatred at this point. Blacks are used to having mayweather fighters, ducking and fighting for whatever benefits them business wise, Mexicans are used to their fighters being occasional punching bags and showing that “Mexican” fighting style and pushing forward and throwing defense out the window…..something canelo hasn’t done since his loss against mayweather. Clearly defensively he has improved but unfortunately that’s what the majority of Mexicans dislike about canelo. Munguia is the favorite for Mexicans because he lacks good defense and just pushes forward, which can be a good thing sometimes…..but as mayweather showed canelo, lacking defensive can be your undoing. This is where canelo is going to show why he fights the way he does. And please don’t bring bivol into this, cuz canelo was fighting above his weight class in that match, so clearly the chances of losing to a natural 175 (185 on fight night) was going to be pretty high.
