Dear John TV being played by John was a really stupid theory to begin with, but especially now that Taylor released Would've, Could've, Should've on Midnights, this collaboration with John is just crazy, I don't think she would ever want to be in the same room with him again, let alone give him space on such a personal and heartbreaking song she wrote because of him, on such an important album for her career, being completely self written, after he even dared to say it was "cheap song writing". The difference between John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhall and how Taylor feels about them now is pretty clear, and while I think the hate Jake has gotten was way out of line and excessive, John deserves everything swifties had been throwing at him. The way Taylor has talked about the relationship in WCS, written 13 years after what happened (finally being the same age he was when they dated, fucking creepy to think about it) , shows just how much those few months they dated affected her and changed her. A 19 year old might legally be an adult, but she was still just a teenager, while ha was a grown ass adult, and lets not forget that other than being extremely younger than him, she was also a huge fan of his, which just contributed more to the manipulation. From everything they’ve said, especially Swift over the years, it was a toxic and emotionally abusive relationship That’s what it really boils down to, he messed with her mind and heart and wrecked her self esteem. There was also a significant power imbalance with her being barely considered a legal adult at 19 and him at 32 with a lot more influence and life experience than she had. You can see a lot of double speak in his public comments about her at the time, constantly saying she was an incredible singer/songwriter who would’ve been successful at any point in time but then also saying that she was very naive and childlike - a lot of both praise and like.. talking down to her Can really fuck someone up to be on the receiving end of that.
