  • Syd Barrett's music has a stillness about it...it's like sitting at home on a rainy day when everyone else it at work, just staring out the window and letting your thoughts wander. Quiet, thoughtful, odd, unhurried...quite a nice place to be really.

    • Likewise. Syd was one of my top heroes in my adolescent years. I was an eccentric bloke in a small town, and I felt much las if Syd and I could relate. Both of us had artistic temperaments, we were both on something of a spiritual quest, we both adored psychedelics. I had to make my own Syd Barrett t-shirts, in those days; I had a mate what worked at a silk-screening shop, and we just made black&white t-shirts using images I d/l’ed from the Syd Barrett web ring and photoshopped Syd’s name onto.

    • Agreed. Some disagree with me (and will cite Beatles etc), but I really think the only other one who can keep up with Syd for sheer creativity is Brian Wilson. Of course, Brian and Syd are radically different styles, but they both use a lot of really unusual vocal melodies, that other artists of the era, as good as they are, don't come close to. And I'm a huge Beatles fan, but man, Syd's stuff is just that bit different. I mean the vocal melody on Baby Lemonade is totally unexpected. He does that a lot, and combined with lyrics that convey imagery really effectively, it's some really unique stuff. Pop songs typically become very tired, but the timing of the lyrics on Dominoes keeps you on your toes. I will never get tired of listening to that song.

  • I think Barrett's fragile genius layed down the foundations and inspiration for many of floyds later classics. somehow after reading a few Floyd books, I cant help get the feeling that barrett was left in the trenches with his illness whilst the rest of the band were more concerned about the the bands progression and stardom. perhaps this is fragmented human nature, but I think its so unfair how Syd was left whilst the band gained worldwide recogntion. no wonder he took a turn for the worst....

    • Yup, pretty much. Syd didn't want to be a sell out. But saw his fellow band mates willing to sell themselves which He wanted no part of. He explains it all in Jugband Blues, and the Music Vedeo pairs so beautifully for the situation.

    • @@Ethan-mn9jh i used to buy this "acid thing", but I see his situation so differently. Rob Chapman wrote amazing book 'A Very Irregular Head' in which he describes exactly what you said. He did a lot of research, interviewed Syd's mates and relatives, listened to a bunch of tapes from recordings of concerts from 1965-1966, and so on. After reading the book, I began to strongly doubt the narrative that PF have been feeding us with for decades. For example detuning his guitar on stage was a performance piece that a seemingly healthy Syd was doing back in 66 that the audience loved. Roger, Rick and Nick have since come out and said that this was when they knew he had gone crazy - only he "went crazy" by their own accounts 1,5 year after he had started doing this. He was sabotaging those shows in America on purpose as a way of protesting against the other members. But on one night, he was electrocuted on stage and this is often referred to as the one where he stood there limp armed. He was just getting ready to sing See Emily Play, all there, with it, and the mic shocked him. He was problematic during mandrax, he could be inhibited and aggressive, but this wasn't his permanent state.

I find I giggle to some lyrics on Baby Lemonade such as these :"It's a sad town, Cold iron hands (clap). there's a party of clowns outside". I translate that in my own mind to a very autumnal dismal day made opposite to that which LSD's splashes of beautiful colours (to the point where passers by are turned into clowns) and being somehow myself an audience where I'm expected to clap but my hands have turned into a metallic material like iron

From what I've read When Syd moved back to Cambridge in his later years, he never spoke about music, never played and seemed shocked that anyone was interested in his music. you would of thought that someone who put such emotion and thought into their music would have that love and passion for their art for life ? Who knows maybe Syd was just an outragesly talented individual who could turn their hand to anything spectacularly as second nature, or maybe his experience of the commercial music industry and personal life tarnished music for life for him and brought back unnerving memories. Really sucks that there are is barely any footage of him let alone proper interviews...elusive to say the least. Still I guess that makes the attraction of the legend of Syd Barrett ever stronger. • @@713ddc Waters has said he's "never been interested in playing any instrument." Gilmour played bass on most of Pink Floyd's studio recordings, and on Syd's albums, and here on the BBC. Roger's "production" work on Madcap consisted of adding reverb in random parts, and leaving some of the false starts and mistakes on the album "to punish him."

  • The older I get, the more firmly I feel he is the greatest songwriter ever, and the simple fact that David Bowie would have likely agreed makes my opinion not as crazy as it seems. Bob Dylan is trash in comparison, Jim Morrison a schoolyard bully shouting Tennyson at us as if we'd never heard it. Barret was human experience defined, the happy seconds and the painful seconds blended with the millenia of sensory deprivation.

  • SYD BARRETT a SHADED BEAUTY; a WASTED MIND (from drugs); a TRUE GENIUS who left a precious legacy to the whole world and to future generations: PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC. Barret writes some songs of that musical genre, never heard before, around YEARS 1965/1966 and anticipates the already famous BEATLES who will "give birth" to the famous album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967; this detail of the musical "authorship" of PSYCHEDELIA says a lot about the innate qualities possessed by SYD BARRET. I repeat the adjectives with which I describe SYD BARRETT from my point of view: a TRUE GENIUS; the CREATOR of PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC; a PRECURSOR who musically anticipated his times: a musician who had VERY CLEAR IDEAS in his mind when he "punched" the guitar strings and sang over them HARMONIES AS WONDERFUL as they were DELICIOUS. I would add that I still consider the album THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, in which BARRET's work is predominant, "a relic" and those "out of time" songs will pave the way for the very first PINK FLOYD with DAVID GILMOUR . BARRETT's two solo albums from 1970 are still to be appreciated even now despite having already celebrated "53 BIRTHDAYS"...Unfortunately BARRETT's musical lucidity was unfortunately too short-lived, otherwise today HE would undoubtedly be on the PODIUM OF BEST MUSICIANS IN THE WORLD: SYD BARRETT will still have a VERY important place in many hearts of people of all ages FOREVER...!!! R.I.P. Syd 💔 ❤

  • Till this day idk why syds name isnt mentioned when talking about the greats of psychedelic music. He had the musicianship and sound, for example his music with pink floyd and he had the lyrics with his solo work like this. He has a solid discography and you can include opel with its unreleased tracks and all his albums and work is great. Why does everyone just focus on his mental breakdown and addiction but not his music? Yes all that other stuff is fascinating and a weird interesting story to learn but his music far proceeds that. Even in the depths of darkness, where its been said he'd just look at you with a dead mans stare and say not a word he released these songs and 2(3) solo albums. I wish to keep seein him more and more and be talked about more and more his name shouldnt be snuffed out of history when he has made history by help making pink floyd. If your a real barret fan spread his music tell your friends and family about it.

    • Cynthia Marston Hi Cynthia. I get sick of reading the dysfunctional ranting about this genius. Each and every one of these songs bears testament to the hallmark sound of early pink floyd being due to Syd himself. Ever since I heard Relics in the early 70’s, I knew it was Syd above all that epitomised the brilliance of Pink Floyd. As far as I am concerned, his gift never stopped giving, and it meant so much to me. God bless him.
