The incident unfolded on February 8 when Mohammad Arif urgently called his brother Zahid after learning about the demolition. Zahid, unaware of the ensuing violence, went out to buy milk for his grandchild but was later shot in the chest by police. Tragically, his 16-year-old son, Mohammad Anas, was also fatally shot by the police while searching for his father.
The clashes, involving both mob violence and police firing, left five Muslims among the casualties, with numerous injuries reported on both sides. The demolition targeted the Mariyam mosque and Abdul Razzaq Zakariya school, constructed in 2002, with residents claiming unfair targeting despite a pending court hearing on the matter.
Residents protested the demolition, emphasizing the significance of the mosque as a place of worship. However, the situation escalated as authorities proceeded with the demolition, leading to clashes between residents and the police. Accounts from residents allege excessive force by the police, including the use of tear gas and baton charges against protesters, further fueling anger and unrest in the community.
The incident underscores the deepening religious tensions in India and raises concerns about the treatment of minority communities in the country.
