How To Stop Wasting Money On Clothes You Never Wear

Today we're talking about techniques to help you stop wasting money on clothes you never wear 💰 This video is broken up into 3 parts...
Part 1: How brands get us to buy more!
Part 2: How to understand your personal style preferences
Part 3: Bonus tips & an exercise
This video was inspired by a reel I saw on Instagram. It was a video of a woman in a peasant dress, frolicking around the fields doing her important "farm work", that quickly cut to a video of another woman on the farm doing ACTUAL farm work. This second woman was muddy and was wearing real farm clothes (Instagram vs. reality type thing!)
This got me thinking about marketing in the fashion industry, and how brands can sell us the dream through their marketing and advertising.
This can often lead us to buying clothes that we hardly wear, because they don't fit our lifestyle.
There are many other reasons we might waste money on clothes we hardly wear, and I talk about all of them in the video!

  • This are my fashion tips: 1_ eat well 2_exercise 3_sleep enough 4_create meaningful relationships with humans 5_stay clear of trends . Voila any clothes would look fab on you because you will feel great (HEALTHY physically and mentally) and clothes won't be your "plaster" to feel good.

    • Love your comment. All those things are the reasons I curbed a clothes addiction. Once I started exercising consistently and working on my mental health, I no longer went shopping for new clothes. I donated nearly all my clothes and was happy wearing the same outfits over and over. Now that I’m happier in my body I have the confidence to wear the clothes I actually want to wear and not let aesthetics and trends choose for me.

  • Dressing your fantasy self is expensive and wasteful. It took me until my early 50s to realise this. The last few years gave me spare time to binge watch KZhead for videos like this. I wish this had been around in the 80's. I would have saved a fortune on flouro clothes and saved a lot of landfill too

    • 🩷 so tough feeling guilty for the waste, I too have felt this way about my previous shopping habits. Giving you permission to let go of the guilt now 🙏 I’m sure you have made such a big difference to the planet with your new consumption habits already 🩷 I hope to talk more about fantasy self soon, maybe I’ll plan a video. A few years ago I wasted so much money and resources on my fantasy self. My fantasy self still lives in my wardrobe but in a way more mindful way, and these are some of my most worn items! Definitely think I’ll plan a video for this. Thank you so much for watching and sharing 😌 xx

    • Yes, I hear you!! I'm 58, almost 59. I buy a lot less clothing these days but make much smarter purchases now. I know who I am now and what I like. No more fantasy self. If I have any doubt at all, it goes back to the store. I really like my wardrobe now probably for the first time in my life. I wasted so much money trying to keep up and buying trendy things that didn't suit my style or body. I worked in a large medical department at a university with lots of women - administrators, doctors, nurses and secretaries - and it was a big fashion show. Women dressing for women. I spent way too much time and money shopping to keep up with the others. I have a smallish wardrobe now, not a capsule wardrobe, but a much smaller one and I am so much happier with it. I used to always feel like I had nothing to wear but I never feel like that anymore. Covid also had a big part in changing my mindset and while I still like fashion and buying a few new pieces to update my wardrobe for both spring/summer and fall/winter, I became a lot less concerned about shopping and enjoy buying less. I love watching videos like this too. It makes intentional shopping so much easier.

  • The fashion industry itself has made me a more conscious consumer because the quality and construction is so poor currently and I refuse to pay for junk. Scouring second hand slows down the shopping process, I’m able to find better quality and I’m keeping something out of the landfill.

    • Loveee this! High standards for quality is so important, I think I have been caught up in the past, for buying before looking at the quality for sure. Hunting for a particular piece second hand really does slow down the process. That’s a great point. Xx

  • I do buy for fantasy self, but I wear the clothes! I've found that its just as easy to wash a floaty linen dress as Jean shorts and a t-shirt. I live in a small town in Indiana but I just can't accept jeans, t-shirt and sneakers everyday of the week!

    @darlenemahaney1258@darlenemahaney125816 күн бұрын
    • Amen! I agree so much! This idea that dressing up on a daily basis is an unrealistic fantasy from the internet is something I couldn’t disagree with more. You don’t have to be a farm worker to wear floaty dresses lol and the picture that was shown at the beginning, I don’t think the woman in the picture was trying to suggest that she does hard work with those clothes. People can wear prairie dresses on a daily basis and take cute pictures on a field and just go on with the rest of the day. That’s realistic to me. I think most people are too stuck on the idea that they need to wear things that are socially acceptable at all times, which would essentially mean that you should wear tshirt and jeans almost always. That’s so boring to me! I’ll continue to wear my floaty dresses in my town in Texas while going to the grocery store 😂

  • I love that you said to ask ourselves if there is an activity that we have too much clothes for or one we don’t have enough for. I am a stay at home mom and for the longest time I didn’t have beautiful and comfortable lounge pants so I would either wear my pajamas until it was time to go out or wear outside clothes like jeans but they didn’t feel comfortable to lounge on the couch with the kids. It has been two weeks and I finally have some elegant lounge pants and I feel so good wearing them.

  • It took me years to realize I had two types of wardrobe: one that is very simple and neutral and that I actually wear ...and a second wardobe that I would buy "fantasy" clothes, clothes for a future profession, clothes that I saw in a movie (peaky blinders!!! ) and so on. No need to say, I hardly look for the second category when I dressing myself. As someone said on the comments: waste of money.

    • Such a common experience 🩷 it sounds like you’re way more aware of it now! Especially knowing where you get influenced by. I’m wondering if you can locate any parts of your fantasy self that you did wear? Or if it was all unworn? For me, my main fantasy self is an effortless French girl. But I’ve managed to inject this into my personal style without copying outfits from head to toe. I love cardigans, have for my whole adult life. But where I wasted my money was thinking of needed all the cardigans with all the patterns. Any cardigan I would come across in a charity shop had to be mine because it matched the French girl style perfectly. Now that I have a colour palette I follow, I only have a few cardigans and they all fit with my colour palette and are worn consistently.

  • There was an old book in the 80s called Color Me Beautiful. It helped me find my color palette and style. It saved me so much time and money! I may want to buy something with ruffles and flowers, but I now know I won’t ever wear it or feel comfortable in it. I notice what I really wear in my closet: understated natural textures and shapes, good fabric, no shiny silk. But that’s just me. One of my elderly friends looks fabulous even now in ruffles and lace.

  • I have been finding myself incorporating new responses to my shopping urges the last year. I am doing much better slowing down and asking "wait don't I already have something extremely similar to this?" Also, recognizing I was shopping for a fantasy self has been another eye opener. But last month I had a birthday and just like every prior year all the emails started pouring in with my birthday discounts, coupons, etc. I made it through without falling prey to the ploy. I wasn't in need of anything from those particular retailers so I just passed up on the offers. It wasn't without some mental wrestling, but I did it. Thank you for your channel.

I am entering my 50’s soon and only in the past decade have educated myself in terms of which season/colour analysis, body shape, aesthetic and the like… so overwhelming but so needed at this day and age. I am still guilty of some things,(ie asking you the blue jumper from your previous videos) 😅 but I am aware and trying to practice what I have watched & learned through these years, THANK YOU for your hard work!

  • I'd give this video 10 likes if I could, going beyond what other content creators are offering and there's much to think about. Have been an enthusiastic op shopper for 40 years curating a working wardrobe that I've loved and enjoyed. Now in retirement I realise that op shopping has become more of an obsession (a way of filling a void) resulting in purchases for a lifestyle I no longer have. One form of "diversion" therapy that seems to be working is spending time in the great outdoors learning and foraging for edible ingredients. Does anyone see a transferable skill here? 😊 Fanta seen here wearing one of my favourite colours is such a bonus. Will watch this video again, even in my 70s I'm learning and evolving.

  • The “Style Slip Up Diary” is a great idea. I have my wardrobe digitised on Open Wardrobe and I’ve set up a wardrobe on there called “Gone 2024” where I’ve moved any item I’ve sold, passed on or donated and then put the reason in the notes section of that item. It’s been great to review and see the items I no longer have. Conversely I also have a wish list wardrobe on there now where I put photos of the item I want to buy and I use these to create outfit collages with the things I already have so I can see whether I would wear them. My no buy finishes at the end of the June and I will have a curated list of items that I’ve considered and will be buying. Thanks Emily, great video!❤

  • Excellent video with so much useful insights. I am looking forward to your new series. Thank you again for sharing this with us. I haven’t written out 🎉sentence per say but I can identify my three words plus the two extra which I cannot remember what they are called 😮 I’m classic with a French Chic and sporty feel like Ralph Lauren. My other descriptives are vintage and quirky. I work at home doing a day program with adult daughter who has Autism. So I have to transition to going for walks and CBI settings like the store, Starbucks etc. Sometimes I will get in a rut because I didn’t get enough sleep (this is typical if you have a child with Autism or obviously have small children). My goal is creativity. My fantasy self is Rita Hayworth especially her role of Gilda but obviously that doesn’t work with my life 😂😂😂

I learned form fitting suite me best but not super tight. I like body suits shirts that stay in place versus t shirts. One thing I need to stop is "I can buy this if I ever go to" or shopping out of boredom...😅. One thing is in the summer I like festivals and concerts so summer clothes are worn.

  • Great contents. Though some people don’t need advertisements to purchase things / clothes. Take my mom for example, she’s over 70 and buying clothes is like her hobby! When we tell her “you didn’t really wear those clothes”, she always says “I shop so I am happy”, actually, she doesn’t spend much on other stuff such as food, beauty, housewares… and she uses her own money…we just can’t blame her for that. I sometimes think this“mindful” or “intentional” shopping behavior is related with personality. Some people just don’t want to be mindful…

  • It’s quite funny, we fantasise over this ideology that isn’t practical at alllllll. During winter/Sprong, I literally wear the same things. So I only own 2 trousers for summer, 2 wool trousers for winter and 2 leggings. Then 3 jumpers. I keep rotating and I don’t need more. Summer is my weakness though 😅

You'd think at the the age of 59 I would know better than to be 'influenced' to think I 'need' this or that item. I wish you'd been around when I was a lot younger as it is only now that I am starting to develop my personal style and feel more comfortable in my clothes. Oh well, better late than never 😅

I love the french style, but must keep in mind that I probably weight 20 lbs more ( at least ) and am 30 years older than the people wearing the clothing that I'm looking aton youtube and pinterest. I also need to stay away from youtube influencers who do fashion hauls. annnnd... I also have too many nice things that don't fit my lifestyle....but how to let them go??? Do you change clothes if going out….grocery, lunch , shopping, activities? Or this new style you are progressing to, do you wear it at home too….cleaning house, cooking, sitting around, gardening, taking a walk?

  • So I bought a couple of jumpsuits a few months ago and have worn them both every week without fail (if not more). If I decided after a month or two that I no longer liked them or wanted to wear them anymore, I have definitely had my monies worth but is this still wasteful? Although I guess they'll probably be in a state of disrepair by the time I'm done 😅. I'm a mum of two (3YO & 9MO).

    • It’s not wasteful in terms of money at all! Sounds like you got your monies worth 😆🥰 what makes you think you might not want to wear them in a few months? Because you’ve worn them so much? Two bubbas! A toddler and a baby 👏 😍 honestly well done mumma!!! I think jumpsuits as a mum are honestly so good! Mine got good use in the warmer weather too, so easy to put on and easy to move around in. ❤️
