Ansu Fati won the hearts of the Barcelona faithful during his debut season. A 16 year old talent, with a very bright future, emerged during a gloomy period for the Catalan club.
But three years on, his career has not kicked on. Injuries have mounted up, but why have they affected him so severely?
Laia Cervelló Herrero looks at what happened to Ansu Fati. Philippe Fenner illustrates.

  • The fact the Barca staff were willing to go against the doctors recommendation is insane. Why would you ever risk permanent injury in a talent like Fati? Maybe it would have played out all the same if he only had 1 recovery session but you can't help but think they turned 1 surgery into 4 by overworking it before it was ready.

  • In his 1st season, it looked almost as if he had a 6th sense on where to be or where to shoot to score. It was magical.

  • What an unfortunate young lad, always happy to see him score, he's been through far too much for a player at his age, the frustration must be immense for him

  • There was a reason why he was given number 10 jersey. He was incredible. He was scoring coming off bench. He started games and still was scoring. He was lethal infront of goal. Almost like muller he could sense where the ball would come in. I would pray for him to get the ball than anyone else in the final third. Hopefully he comes back to his former self.

  • I saw him in 2019, and he genuinely used to make a difference. Even Messi would appreciate him. I really hope to see him again in his previous form.

  • As a Barcelona fan, I hope that his form and confidence increases as soon as possible. He is a massive talent that has great potential, if he can regain his confidence ❤

  • For last 3-4 matches I was shocked seeing how different he is, he lost almost every basic he could do with ease. Balance, first touch, agility, and finishing all is gone.

  • It really is a heartbreaking story. Before the injury he wasn't just looking like another young talent, he was looking like THE talent. Capable of reaching the level of where Mbappe & Haaland are now, or at least close to it. I specifically remember a couple of games for Spain on the international break just before the injury when he was both times the best player on the pitch, he looked truly unstoppable, gliding past players like they weren't their.

  • I'm a Barcelona fan here. It's heartbreaking to compare the old him to the post injury version.

  • Injuries man.... Injuries. 3 operations on the same place for an 18 YO kid. Now he's slowly getting into form, all we need is his confidence back. He's got that cold deadly touch in the box fosho.

  • As someone who had meniscus surgery exactly 1 year ago, I'm still feeling some pains and tenderness. I can play soccer again and run around and chase my son, but I'm still not 100%. I had to take it SLOOOOWWW at the start for the first month after the surgery. I can totally see that rushing Fati back was such a major factor in all the subsequent injuries. I feel sorry for him. Hopefully he fully recovers, but by now, I have my doubts.

  • I think it's almost like a rashford situation. A guy because of injuries and other factors lost his confidence and is now coming back to his best because mentally and psychologically a player gets more mature. The same has to happen with fati and it might take a bit more time in my opinion. I remember pep said in an interview, every players career will never be in an upward trajectory if you put it on a graph, it goes up and peaks and comes down and then after 1 or 2 seasons it goes up again and remains at his peak potential for the reminder of the career. I think fati is now in a downward trend and he will have to grow and mature mentally, physically, just like vinicius did last season, that Transition from one of the best young talents in the world to being a young adult who is not afraid to take on responsibilities and having the confidence to do so, that is the hardest part. Let's hope fati makes that transition and recovers mentally from all his traumas because of injuries.

  • To be quite honest, I don't really like these kinds of videos when discussing players who are in their late teens early 20s. Like I remember media outlets calling ødegaard a flop and wondering "what happened to him" when he was like 19 or 20 and now he's tearing premier defences to shreds with his passing and vision. Ansu Fati still has plenty of time left in his career and I'm sure he will revive it, he has the talent and seems like a good kid devoted to his craft. I just think it's a bit soon to talk about him being a footballing disappointment when his career is still kind of in the process of getting going.

  • The injury just hard halted his career. He was progressing rapidly before that. Hope he returns. He's still trying so hard. It's always evident.

  • When we saw players getting injured and coming back from there it didn't seem like a big deal, but when we think about it it's still surgery. I myself fortunately have never had any surgery in my life whereas these footballers have had a lot of it in their careers even since they were young.

  • This video made me sad. If only injuries were there to sideline a player a few days but did not have an impact to affect their later performances 😟. Young prodigies not reaching their full potentials is so terrible!

  • Barca fan or not you gotta feel for the player for everything he has gone through. Hope he gets things on track.
