The Protestant Reformation set out to purge Christianity of error. But once you have started, how do you know when to stop? Some radicals tore up layer upon layer of tradition in the tireless search for deeper truths, proving their faith by their refusal to believe.
This lecture will track these radical quests and show how they could lead to positions like those of Baruch Spinoza or Thomas Hobbes: God may still exist but is almost wholly out of reach.
Gresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. There are currently over 2,500 lectures free to access. • I cannot tell if this guy is an atheist or not. I don't think it matters.

  • Excellent view. Much detail, good emphasis on what really religion is about and what not. I really hope you get more viewers. This is worth it!

  • I don't doubt (or don't think I doubt) that this lecture is very important for both Christians and Atheists to hear. Excellent clear delivery of exciting ideas. As to whether any of these radical christians or post christians is actually right I think of the professor who taught me the course "The quest for the historical Jesus". He said to us "Well ladies and gentlemen. You pays your money and you takes your choice"

  • By the way Alec - when it comes to describing fiery radicals burning bibles I think you need to say to your audience "don't try this at home"
