CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Determined to stop another disaster from happening, John Koestler (Nicolas Cage) chases down a suspected terrorist, only to realize he's wrong.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A time capsule containing a cryptic message about the coming apocalypse sends a concerned father on a race to prevent the horrific events from unfolding as predicted in this sci-fi thriller directed by Alex Proyas (Dark City) and starring Nicolas Cage. 1958: As the dedication ceremony for a newly constructed elementary school gets under way, a time capsule containing student drawings of the future is buried on the grounds and scheduled to be unearthed on the school's 50th anniversary. Instead of submitting a drawing, however, one little girl scribbles a series of seemingly random numbers on her paper before it is buried. Fifty years later, the time capsule is unearthed for a new generation of students to examine. Young Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury) is one of those students. The mysterious sequence of numbers falling into his possession, Caleb takes the paper to his father, Professor John Koestler (Cage), for examination. Studying the numbers, Professor Koestler soon discovers that they aren't random at all, but an encoded message containing the precise dates, death tolls, and coordinates of every major disaster since the time capsule was buried. Not only that, but the document also indicates that there will be three more such events, the last of which indicates a doomsday scenario that appears directly tied to Professor Koestler and Caleb. His desperate plea to authorities falling on deaf ears, Professor Koestler realizes that his only hope for preventing more lives from being lost is to take personal action. Though the author of the prophecies is no longer living, Professor Koestler is eventually able to track down her daughter Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne), and granddaughter Abby, who reluctantly agree to aid in the investigation. As the final date on the list draws near, Professor Koestler enters into a frantic race against time to prevent destruction on a global scale, in the process realizing that in order to save millions of lives, he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

how much kinetic energy does this train have jesus
Hundreds of times more than what it would have in real life lol. If this scene had taken real physics into account, the train would have lost most of its kinetic energy when dragging against the tunnel wall and floor and smashing into the tunnel barrier, and it would have likely stopped somewhere in the tunnel well before reaching the station.
@@jaredevans8263 Force equals mass times acceleration
@@jaredevans8263 someone actually animated this scene if it was realistic. The train never reached the station.

Just someone getting bit by an alligator.
I don't know if it is just me, but I love how they kept with a greyish color scheme. It is just so genius how to created this scene and seen so many people die without the gore. It is so chilling
i mean one scene had like a splash of blood but other than that yeah
I think the effectiveness of the scene lies in just how realistic it feels. Of course the train's station-wide slide show does give physics (particulary the concept of kinetic energy absorption) a massive middle finger but most horror movies like to treat human bodies like blood grenades that paint entire rooms red with one tap or hear some tense horror music in the background to make that heartbeat speed up but here you don't have any of that. No tense music, no explosions, no excessive gore. You only see the train (unrealistically) mowing down entire crowds of people and flinging them all over the place as they run and scream in terror. It's such a simple yet incredibly effective way to instill fear into the viewer

Why stop there? Clearly they don't give a damn about physics, so why not have the train continue to fly sideways up the stairs and onto the streets of Manhattan, where it can crash through the Empire State Building, hit a ramp in a skatepark, and launch into the sky, hitting and destroying the Moon?
IMM DEADD😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Because it's a movie, not a parody. It's not supposed to be realistic but at least look "believable" while you're caught up in the movie. You'd be surprised by the amount of people who don't really know physics and never notice that kind of thing.

Why have NASA when you have MTA?
Railroad engineer (36 years) here. Can confirm that minor electrical fluctuations regularly cause rail switches to randomly change direction. Also, trains violently derail when going over switches even when they are stationary, and the depiction of the train as carrying enough kinetic energy to crash through several brick barriers, dozens of pillars, hundreds of humans all while the brakes are applied at full emergency is entirely accurate. Bravo bravo a real standard for depictions of trains in movies

In my opinion, this movie scene can confirmed as one of an another DEADLIEST subway disaster in US history. There’s a lot of people injured and some of them aren’t so lucky on the brutal crash.
I think that was stated in the film. It even mentions the Malbone Street wreck of November 1st, 1918 which is still to date the deadliest crash in the history of the NYC subway. 93 confirmed fatalities and 250 injuries.
I didn’t learn anything from this yet but thanks for the info. I would definitely change the comment and make sure that is more consistent.

This movie is so intense for a PG-13 movie, seeing so many innocent people just die in such a violent event.

PEOPLE DIED FROM THE TRAIN RUNNING THEM OVER
I'm impressed with the fact that this scene was filmed without excessive gore yet manages to be very harrowing. It has some implausible features involving basic laws of physics, but HEY, it's a movie. Whadaya want ? Plain ol' boring realism? This is where suspension of disbelief comes in, and the sci fi genre taps into people's desire for the fantastic to relieve them from the monotony and tedious predictability of the mundane. Can I throw words around or what !!

@@TheUltimateTroll9 it’s supposed to decelerate due to the high coefficient of kinetic friction. It shouldn’t keep going like that, that isn’t how force works. saddest part about the people he managed to save in this scene is that literally all of them would die in the ending anyhow..
That thought gives me so much dread
That's probably why Lucinda never did what he did. She knew that any life she saved would be moot in the end.
@@byron2FZ Lucinda also knew exactly who would die and where. Even without the solar flare doing what it did, there was no stopping a lot of the disasters that did occur.

It’s all for entertainment. I agree though.
Depends on how fast it is going.
No it could not break those beams. It could break on beam but the train would be destroyed upon hitting the first one
Afterall, it's thick concrete with some iron bars in it versus long metal can
Seriously guys??? You don't seem to know what forces a present even at a low speed crash. May the first waggon will be ripped apart by a beam but the ones behind will push the wreck through a lot more of them.
