CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Determined to stop another disaster from happening, John Koestler (Nicolas Cage) chases down a suspected terrorist, only to realize he's wrong.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A time capsule containing a cryptic message about the coming apocalypse sends a concerned father on a race to prevent the horrific events from unfolding as predicted in this sci-fi thriller directed by Alex Proyas (Dark City) and starring Nicolas Cage. 1958: As the dedication ceremony for a newly constructed elementary school gets under way, a time capsule containing student drawings of the future is buried on the grounds and scheduled to be unearthed on the school's 50th anniversary. Instead of submitting a drawing, however, one little girl scribbles a series of seemingly random numbers on her paper before it is buried. Fifty years later, the time capsule is unearthed for a new generation of students to examine. Young Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury) is one of those students. The mysterious sequence of numbers falling into his possession, Caleb takes the paper to his father, Professor John Koestler (Cage), for examination. Studying the numbers, Professor Koestler soon discovers that they aren't random at all, but an encoded message containing the precise dates, death tolls, and coordinates of every major disaster since the time capsule was buried. Not only that, but the document also indicates that there will be three more such events, the last of which indicates a doomsday scenario that appears directly tied to Professor Koestler and Caleb. His desperate plea to authorities falling on deaf ears, Professor Koestler realizes that his only hope for preventing more lives from being lost is to take personal action. Though the author of the prophecies is no longer living, Professor Koestler is eventually able to track down her daughter Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne), and granddaughter Abby, who reluctantly agree to aid in the investigation. As the final date on the list draws near, Professor Koestler enters into a frantic race against time to prevent destruction on a global scale, in the process realizing that in order to save millions of lives, he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

  • how much kinetic energy does this train have jesus

    @user-ff4pi9dc3g@user-ff4pi9dc3g4 жыл бұрын
    • Hundreds of times more than what it would have in real life lol. If this scene had taken real physics into account, the train would have lost most of its kinetic energy when dragging against the tunnel wall and floor and smashing into the tunnel barrier, and it would have likely stopped somewhere in the tunnel well before reaching the station.

    • I think the effectiveness of the scene lies in just how realistic it feels. Of course the train's station-wide slide show does give physics (particulary the concept of kinetic energy absorption) a massive middle finger but most horror movies like to treat human bodies like blood grenades that paint entire rooms red with one tap or hear some tense horror music in the background to make that heartbeat speed up but here you don't have any of that. No tense music, no explosions, no excessive gore. You only see the train (unrealistically) mowing down entire crowds of people and flinging them all over the place as they run and scream in terror. It's such a simple yet incredibly effective way to instill fear into the viewer

  • Why stop there? Clearly they don't give a damn about physics, so why not have the train continue to fly sideways up the stairs and onto the streets of Manhattan, where it can crash through the Empire State Building, hit a ramp in a skatepark, and launch into the sky, hitting and destroying the Moon?

Also, trains violently derail when going over switches even when they are stationary, and the depiction of the train as carrying enough kinetic energy to crash through several brick barriers, dozens of pillars, hundreds of humans all while the brakes are applied at full emergency is entirely accurate. Bravo bravo a real standard for depictions of trains in movies

  • I'm impressed with the fact that this scene was filmed without excessive gore yet manages to be very harrowing. It has some implausible features involving basic laws of physics, but HEY, it's a movie. Whadaya want ? Plain ol' boring realism? This is where suspension of disbelief comes in, and the sci fi genre taps into people's desire for the fantastic to relieve them from the monotony and tedious predictability of the mundane. Can I throw words around or what !!
