Jamarcus Russell flamed out of the league for three seasons because he was out of shape, very inconsistent, and didn’t even understand how an NFL play works because he didn’t watch the tape. Chargers are still a mediocre team because its owner continues to suck. They should’ve never left San Diego.

  • Steve Emtman was a monster of a DL his first season at Indy. That one clip they showed of him was from a game late in his rookie season against Miami. Indy had just scored a go-ahead TD, and then Dan Marino looked to be primed for one of his patented last-minute comebacks. He drove all the way to the Indianapolis 10, and on the ensuing play Marino threw a ball in Emtman's direction that Steve speared in mid-air and ran back 90 yards for a game-sealing defensive TD. Again, this was a defensive lineman! Injuries pretty much wrecked the remainder of his career, which was sad because he really looked great that first season.

    @samuellaird5184@samuellaird518419 күн бұрын
    • Because Jamarcus Russell. Leaf was drafted #2 after a Top 5 all-time QB and ahead of another all-time bust who never gets talked about in Andre Wadsworth. Meanwhile the next 2 picks after Russell(picked #1. Or #3 as they say in video) are both in Canton- Calvin Johnson and Joe Thomas. You can even argue that Mandarich belongs ahead of him since he’s the only one of the Top 5 picks from his draft not in Canton with the other 4 being Aikman, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders and Derrick Thomas.

  • You forgot to mention the blank tapes incident about JaMarcus Russell. Oh you haven’t heard? The Raiders coaches were so convinced that Russell wasn’t watching an ounce of film so they sent him home with blank tapes and called them “blitzes” and told him to study it. Then he came back the next day. The Raiders coaches asked him what he thought of the film he said “looks good” 😬

  • I would disagree with number 1. Ryan Leaf should be number 1, despite JaMarcus Russell having been first overall. The Chargers traded up to take Leaf, who some thought was better than Peyton Manning who went number 1. The 1998 draft also featured Charles Woodson and Randy Moss. The second quarterback taken in 2007 was Brady Quinn, who was also a bust. Because of that, the Leaf pick is worse. Also, Rick Mirer should be on this list as well as Todd Marinovich, Ki-Jana Carter, Akili Smith, and I would include Fabian Washington (2005) because the Raiders traded into the 1st round to the Jets in a trade that included players Al Davis got in the trade of Jon Gruden to Tampa Bay - instead of taking Aaron Rodgers after the Raiders had traded the 7th overall pick for Randy Moss, Davis took a CB who ran a 4.2. That, in the long run, is why the Raiders had to take JaMarcus Russell 1st overall and traded Moss for a 4th round pick. They could have taken Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas at 1st overall. The list clearly skews towards more recent years because there is more footage readily available for this compilation when there are bigger flops in the annals of NFL history, players taken 1st overall that never played in the NFL. The Isaiah Wilson pick probably didn't need to be on the list, because it was 29th pick. My general rule when it comes to busts is, he had to be a top 5 pick or have had a lot of hype going into the draft. It was a story that he fell in the first round and it looked like a steal, as was the case with Johnny Manziel, when the Browns could have taken Derek Carr or Jimmy Garoppolo instead of Manziel who seldom played. I would have included Corey Coleman on this list as well - because Cleveland infamously took five wide receivers in the same draft because of analytics. A better list would be to rank the 10 teams that have had the most bad draft picks, since the NFL merger. I would guess, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints would be the top 5 or so. In their history, the Raiders have generally done well in the draft - except with quarterbacks like JaMarcus Russell and Todd Marinovich or more recent CBs like DJ Hayden, Damon Arnette, and Gareon Conley, or, in bizarre trades like the one that sent the 1st overall pick to the Chiefs for Cotton Davidson that KC used to pick Buck Buchanan (Hall of Fame), or the one in 2005 for Washington. And I forgot, Clelin Ferrell at 4th overall, but they made up for it with Maxx Crosby in the 4th round.

  • Yes, Shuler was not a good NFL QB>. To mention the contract negotiation, and seemingly blaming Shuler for his holdout prior to signing, is doing him a disservice. Even Charley Casserly stated the holdout due to the contract negotiation was not Shuler's fault. The Redskins and Shuler's agent were working on a contract that had never been done before. The type of contract they agreed on became a standard NFL contract a few years later.

  • And every single one of these guys was top of some, most, or all the scout’s lists going into the draft. I say this because some teams get saddled with “yeah, well, you picked this guy first and he was awful” label, but really, these guys are usually in a system designed to hide their flaws and win a championship against teams that will almost always have an exploitable weakness. In the pros, you can’t have a weakness because you’ll get exploited by just one player, not even a whole team.
