  • I love the part of Scorsese's speech when he says that seeing a De Mille picture was an event for him because for me seeing a Scorsese film is an event.

  • @Gaston088able That's an OLD film storytelling motto. Now, with Cameron's help, you can actually make a perfect film without dialogue. Not a silent film, per-say. But, Cameron has certain laid the track for perfect visual storytelling. On par with Kane, IMO.

  • @84g8 Yeah I went overboard with the off screen bit. Although ever since that film Di Caprio has come on leaps and bounds. I think Day Lewis was better by a fair margin but ever since Leo has been superb. Although There Will Be Blood has some of the most understated, real acting I've ever seen from Day Lewis. Its a shame everyone just remembers those scenes he dominates. Paul Dano is outrageously good as well. He could be a genuine great on the basis of that film alone should he get the roles.

    @LukeLovesRose@LukeLovesRose13 жыл бұрын
  • Because you don't understand how Cameron's shots work, does NOT MEAN that they're hollow in any way. And making a film, where the plot is the most crucial thing, is pretty one-dimensional. BUT, if the plot is a byproduct of great character story, motivation, etc, you get a James Cameron film. And, given the finished products like Aliens and T2, I'd say that will make for a GREAT FUTURE in film.

  • After doing my own storyboards, based off everything I've learned, simply by watching Cameron's work, there's no goddamn way I'm going to change my mind about his genius. And, it's too goddamn bad for you, if you don't like hearing me defend him, against inexperienced, juvenile comments. What the hell do you mean, Cameron masks his actor with his writing? He's actually creating characters so well, visually, with every shot, you just think Cameron's writing is poor.

  • You know what pisses me off about Scorsese and Cameron is the way Marty here said that "We need technical directors like James Cameron." As a film lover or genius himself, Scorsese can't see the artistry in the way Cameron conveys characters. Marty is treating JC as nothing more than another Bay or DeMille or any other filmmakers that supposedly cares more about effects than character and story. BUT, Cameron did bring the Terminator to life and aside from a few shots, he was not an effect.

    @LukeLovesRose@LukeLovesRose13 жыл бұрын
  • @razbigranicu DeMille really was never as great as Marty let-on. He may have made big event movies, but they always had one defining characteristic. They never really submerged the viewers into their world as well as most of the true masters have done so well over the years. Yes, he helped found film, but he wasn't a master of the moving image like Scorsese, Cameron, Kubrick, Hitchcock, etc. These directors know exactly where and how to keep the audiences attentions, no matter what happens.

    @LukeLovesRose@LukeLovesRose13 жыл бұрын
  • You still haven't answered my question. What kind of movie did Travis Bickle take Betsy to in Taxi Driver? It's really not hard, if you've actually seen the film.

    @LukeLovesRose@LukeLovesRose12 жыл бұрын
  • @84g8 Nah I'd disagree with you there! (again!) The Departed isn't as good as the original japanese/chinese film (can't remember now). I also happen to think that Scorsese best picture and Leo's best performance was in Shutter Island although I understand thats not everyones taste!! leo is superb in that. Its a crime if he doesn't take home the best actor award for SI. Or if his (similar don't you think, the wife kids etc) inception performance is considered more worthy.

  • @84g8 No way. Day Lewis has never done an average performance. Not all of his performances have been about intensity either, some of his best work are his understated performances. I've watched all Di Caprio films apart from Blood Diamond and all Day lewis. Day Lewis is superior although he has been around a great deal longer and with every role Leo improves. No Day Lewis has diversity vs Di Caprio. He is quite far ahead in that department although Leo will definetly be an all time great.

    @iloveneytiri@iloveneytiri14 жыл бұрын
  • Unlike people with such limited vision, like you, Gaston, I've actually experimented with Cameron genius techniques on my own... and I've gotta say.... What James Cameron can do visually is so much harder than writing some "revolutionary" screenplay. Btw, writing such an awesome screenplay... that transcends all others before it... is impossible... after the gargantuan amount of screenplays produced in Hollywood in the last 100 years. So, maybe you should cut JC some slack.

  • @razorraymarv KING OF AMERICAN CINEMA? how about SPIELBERG, COPOLLA, CAMERON

    @MrPrincebinondo@MrPrincebinondo12 жыл бұрын
  • @mrkottinmouth That's unfair. We obviously have no idea what Cameron was thinking in that shot. However, Cameron's work has been phenomenal for almost 30 years. His films are aging like wine. And, I think anyone would be a fool not to count James Cameron among the true masters of film. But, I've recently noticed that there are a lot of fools in Hollywood today. Like everyone felt after 2001, filmmakers better learn to adapt to James Cameron's definitive style or get out.

    @LukeLovesRose@LukeLovesRose13 жыл бұрын
  • @ I have watched every single DDL performance. Selfish? That is crazy! He doesn't write or direct so dominating screen time etc by his own hand is an absurd accusation. Also watch other performances like Gangs of NY where he acts Leo of screen despite being on for less time. Saying hes selfish is like complaining when Messi runs from one end of the field to the other and scores a wonder goal 'why didn't he pass it?'' Good point about Keaton but he never made a film IMO as good as City Lights.

    @iloveneytiri@iloveneytiri14 жыл бұрын
  • @Ichir Might compare? The American media seem to believe to be a great actor you have to have an American passport. Day Lewis has already had a much more diverse set of roles than Brando, Pacino and De Niro. He also hasn't done any terrible films or ever seeked to just cash in on his fame like De Niro in Meet The Fuckers etc. He also hasn't done a bad or average performance which you certainly couldn't say for the above 3. No, Day Lewis is in a class of 1 to anyone that has seen ALL his films.

  • Gaston088able, I can't believe you're still trying to fight me on this. I have an opinion and I'm sticking by it. You may not agree with my opinion. But, that doesn't mean my opinion is bad. I just happen to look at film a little differently than you. That's not a bad thing. That just means that we're both unique individuals... with different perspectives. Btw, I think we should go back in time and tell Shakespeare not to write that teen romance of his. It's too cliche and melodramatic right?

  • Now, if you want art for the sake of art, watch Barry Lyndon and 2001. They are both perfectly made for that reason. But, I want more than that. I want ART AND entertainment. I want movies like A Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove. I want The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2, True Lies, and especially Titanic. I also want Avatar. These are all art AND entertainment films. Michael Bay does not make art. He makes explosions look cool. And that's all he's capable of.

  • The future of film? If that is the case, then we are in big trouble....If Scorsese's is "old news" and Cameron speaks for the future of films...then you are basically saying that the idea of good storytelling is outdated...and the future is all about hollow visuals.......can't wait for the future!

    @KayWildcat@KayWildcat12 жыл бұрын

  • Lynch, Von Trier, Scorsese and Polanski art is so much on the surface and obvious that I picked it all up like 10 years ago. My suspicions were confirmed when certain filmmakers started telling us all their intentions for the films in the audio commentary. Cameron lies about his intentions for each film. You know why? Because he can. Because there are only a chosen few of us who can see his films for the artistic masterpieces that they are. Your childish crap confirms that.

Hell, he's not even in my top 5 for his contemporaries. Chaplin is the most important actor of the silent film era, though you could make the argument for Keaton being better.

They are so diferent stories like films made every year....they have similaritys in some things,beucase they are about universal trues about human nature, but you IGNORANT "CONFUSE" to "8 major stories" resuming filmaking to that because you try to make the point that is OK that cameron copied other stories, not SOME, THE COMPLETE STORYLINE!

  • Is this really how pathetic you have become? All of a sudden, being responsible for an actor's stardom makes you a genius? One of many things that keep Scorsese and Cameron apart, is that Cameron masks his actor with his writing. It's not about the actors, it's all about his weak writing. For Scorsese, it's about an actor contributing to another dimension to the story. If you got Arnold with Cameron, you got the best out of DeNiro through Scorsese....you should really stop with this nonsense.
