Making a pair of Rivet Headers

2022 ж. 10 Ақп.

In this video I'm going to make a pair of rivet header. I have used these for the book press restoration, well just one of them to be correct. But I decided to make two, so I could also use them to make a rivet connection with round heads on both side. On the book press I have used them to let the half round rivet head sit securly in the dimple of the rivet header, so I could peen the other end of the rivet.
I used 34CrNiMo6 for this tool. I hardened it and tempered it to give the tool more durability.
If you haven't seen the book press restoration yet, here's the link:

  • I said it before and I'll say it again: You have ruined all other restoration channels for me, after getting used to the precision and care you put into restoring any other channel I watch just leaves me thinking "My Mechanics would never do that" "My Mechanics would have done it better" etc. etc.

    • @@LivingRealms I dont even make it half way through the other channels before i find myself thinking they are just not doing it like it should be done, all because of they way this channel does things so perfectly. The other channels do good work but they just do not come close to this guys level.

  • Fascinating watching you make the header. I forge mine, so it's great to see a different approach. I put a taper on the back as well. This way the hammer blow is more likely to be down the centre of the tool. Also I slightly dome the back to get a more stable contact with the hammer.

  • MMI, another terrific video! I am always excited when I see that you have dropped another video. Thanks. I have always been fascinated by idioms from one language to another. For example, in English, "I need to take a leak." To a non-native English speaker, "Don't you mean 'you need to _leave_ a leak'!" I have the same interest in tool names from one language to another. The obvious example, 'spanner' (British) vs. 'wrench' (American). "England and the USA, two countries separated by a common language!" So, I, an American English speaker, know the tool you made as 'rivet snap', possibly due to its use to create the head on a 'snap rivet' (a rounded head rivet). With your use of the tool, I would call it a 'rivet buck'. 'Rivet set' is very much more descriptive. Except, I know a rivet set as a tool, sometimes combined in one tool with a rivet snap, that sets two pieces of, typically, light gauge sheet metal tightly together before peening the rivet. I'll wager that in the USA, there are regional differences in the names of these tools. Not claiming any term is better than another, just interested in the comparison. Be well & Best regards!

  • In aviation we call them rivet snaps. The dome shape does vary for US and UK rivets but the button snap is ideal on all flush/countersunk rivets.

  • If you can get ahold of some 3 flute endmills, that will help a lot with the chatter issues. 2 flute cutters are notorious for chatter since they cutting edges are parallel from each other and they develop a rhythm of vibration that feeds into itself. 4 flute endmills have the same issue, which is why they make ones with offset flutes to interrupt those vibrations and they also make them with a varying helix pitch that accomplishes a similar goal.

How do you manage that area? Is it stupid simple and I just don't know? Or is it a pain to do? How often do you do it? I ask as I am watching the hand grinder restoration video. Again. Thank you for everything you do and create.

I also make my own tools, but it mostly applies to electronic test equipment rather than mechanical things. At times I make these too (e.g. some bearing race presses when I tinkered more with bicycles), but it's pretty rare compared to electronics making. As for the bookbinding press, it looks soooooo gorgeous - I'm absolutely stunned! "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever" --John Keats
