Is Leatherman still the king of the multi-tool or are there better options out there? In this video I explore alternatives from GOAT, Gerber, SOG, Roxon, and Victorinox to see who wears the crown.
This channel is here to give you ideas and inspiration when it comes to finding great Everyday Carry, Travel Gear and Gadgets, on the back of solid and detailed reviews alongside years of experience, which I hope will make life and travel just a little bit more frictionless and fun.
Here are links to the products featured. This can consist of Amazon affiliate links (and as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases) as well as supplier affiliate links and direct website links. See below for more on affiliate links.

Product Sourcing:
When it comes to sourcing a product for review, I will usually either purchase and item personally or reach out to a supplier requesting a sample for review. Many suppliers are supportive if they are confident in their product, appreciating the value of greater exposure.
I am sometimes sent a product by a supplier which I may include if the product fits planned content and I believe will be of interest to you, my audience. The product needs to be worthy of a review and I always make it clear to the supplier that they cannot influence or be involved in the content in any way. It is not in my interest to review inferior or poor quality products and therefore as you might expect many product offers are politely declined.
Any sponsored videos (paid for reviews) are clearly stated as such so there can be no misunderstanding.
Sometimes a supplier will provide a link to the product or the supplier which I am happy to include in the description. Sometimes I will be provided with an affiliate link so I can earn a commission on sales and this helps to support channel costs but never at the expense of an honest review. There is no cost to you and in some cases discounts can be obtained via the link or via an included code.
If a product I have reviewed is available from Amazon I will often include an Amazon link in the description. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you purchase a product or service with the links that I provide I may receive a small commission. There is no additional charge to you.
Replying to Comments:
I really appreciate the feedback in the comments - I find it a source of knowledge and inspiration - so thank you to all of you who take the time to contribute. This is not just for me as the creator, it is a valuable source of information for all readers of the comments. I have recently found that if I continue to respond to all the comments as the number of videos builds, it takes significant time away from being able to produce new content which would be very counter productive! So my aim is to read everything I can and reply when I can, after each video goes live for the first few hours at least, and beyond that when possible. I'll see how that works out 😊

    • Hi Jon , a while ago I flogged my leatherman surge and replaced it with a victorinox ranger, knipex mini combination pliers, knipex mini waterpump pliers, knipex co bolt mini bolt cutters, pic quic stubby multi bit screw driver with 5 extra long pic quic bits and a stanley close quarters hack saw ... plus my 14 inch ,ovalised, tool steel gorilla bar and d2 tool steel khukri... All the tools in my new kit are wayyy out of the league of any other tools of the same size ..obviously the Weight and bulk of my tool kit is ridiculously huge . But the performance is unbeatable for urban shtf survival. If I was still into multi tools as a stand alone kit item ,I would definitely buy the GOAT multi tool . Everyone knows you're the world's leading authority on edc gadgets ... this video further demonstrates that fact . .. really excellent video as always jon .... thanks .

  • Being a guy who has carried a multitool daily for 30 years, and having a drawer full of them, this is one of the best put together reviews I have seen!! Having lived in the UK for a while (for some time carrying a locking blade not knowing the possible reprecussions, understanding the value of removing a blade is great.). Really informative and impartial. Thanks for a great bit of advice!!

    • Worst case scenario, you can carry it around with the blade removed and put it in when needed. It would be nice to see a higher quality version of that concept with a nicer steel.

    • Victorinox tools lock in place and won't move a μm, have mine for 2 years and there's still not the slightest hint of play on any of the tools. Not sure if such a feature would compromise that because if it did, I could do without.

  • For me it's the NexTool Black Knight. I think it blows all other multitools out of the water. Ticks all the boxes. Non locking blade for EDC (but also available in a locking version), fold out pliers, fold out scissors, 3D Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, takes screwdriver bits, and has a saw and awl. Nothing from Leatherman or any of the other brands can compete with this for me. It's mainly having both the pliers and scissors that set it apart.

    @lornelorne5727@lornelorne57278 ай бұрын
    • I’ve got the Nextool Flagship, which is very similar. Gives you the large Roxon scissors in a smaller tool overall. It’s below Leatherman quality (there’s some pitting in the steel), but worth the $30 I paid.

  • Great review as always, that Roxon 6 quirky and worth adding to the collection. I have a few multitools (Leatherman, Gerber, Schrade, SOG, Victorinox) and for me Victorinox is top of the pile when it comes to fit and finish or ease of use. I only wish they came with a blameless version to be UK compliant. FYI I made my MP600 UK compliant by taking the knife of and replacing it with washers.

  • I started my multi tool collection with Gerber. I’ve bought several Leatherman tools along the way looking for something “better”, but keep coming back to Gerber. Not every design is a winner. Some have been real stinkers. However, Dime, MP 800 Legend, MP 600, and now Dual Force are my go to tools. I also EDC an Armbar Drive Slim, alongside a Victorinox Compact, because I’m constantly needing a good screwdriver. Videos like this do help, as I never stop looking for “better” tools.

Then I saw your review of the Gerber Gear Multi-Plier, and I liked it. I ordered two different second-hand ones and adjusted the parts myself to obtain a multi-tool with all the functions I needed. I'm still using it. I mounted the materials that were not useful to me on the other tool and sold it. Honestly, it was incredibly economical and I got exactly the functionalities I wanted in a tool. Thank you again for preparing this video.

  • I bought my Gerber tool in the late nineties to use in my work in outside broadcast tv. Single handed opening was essential and the plier jaws had to be big enough and strong enough to open, hold and close the rear ferrule on a camera cable Triax connector. Still going strong. Only quibble would be the durability of the wire cutter jaws.

  • Great content as always, Jon! I have several Gerber Multi-Pliers, including the MP400 and MP600. I do like the tools, but the replaceable cutters are quite brittle and tend to break. Stock up on replacements if you plan to do a lot of wire cutting. They are often out of stock on Gerber's site but can be had on the secondary market.

  • I do have the SOG Power Access Deluxe and I like that you bring out the 1/4" socket and then show the adapter. Most video's I see view the 1/4" as only for the bits and not actually for socket wrenchs. I like to keep my SOG Power Access Deluxe with my tools and am considering building a tool pouch around it too. Most things I do around the house is not heavy so I sure I can find many uses for it and tools. I like your MP 600, mine do not have the replaceable cutters, but did you know the 3d philips is for an adapter for 1/4" hex bits? The Gerber bit adapter kit fits and the Letheraman bit kit for my Supertool 300 fit too. Thanks for the videos and keep them comeing. 🙂

  • Ive had a Snap-on variant of the MP600 for around 3/4 years now, I use it almost daily at work. I can open all tools one handed, which is great for certain situations. Only downfall is that the wire cutters seem to wear very quickly, used mainly on mig welding wire. A little bulky for a pocket, so better with the pouch on a belt. I tried a SOG power pint, which was a nice lighter alternative for adding screwdriver options but ive switch back to the dependable robust gerber as my mainstay work carry

  • I EDC a LM Knifeless Rebar after having tried many makes and models of multi-tools over the years. Didn’t get the Knifeless version because of any crazy laws (the fact even a locking blade on a multi-tool could be illegal anywhere is mind boggling) but because I carry a larger, quality, dedicated knife (locking) as well. As far as quality and warranty go Leatherman is unmatched in my opinion. And in almost all cases they also are superior when it comes to size and weight. Being a huge believer in “the best tool is the one you have on you” the fact that the Knifeless Rebar is a tool I never leave my bedroom without makes it the best for me.

  • I was wondering if you could review the Victorinox Farmer X, in my opinion one of the best SAKs money can buy. I’ve carried the Knifeless Rebar and the Crunch, both have more than I could want but are a tad more cumbersome than a SAK where the knife, scissors, bottle opener and screwdrivers meet my everyday needs… the farmer aces it by having the saw for when I’m out in the garden or in the woods. It surprised me how little the pliers were necessary … and when they are, the crunch does a much better job having locking pliers!

  • I had a Gerber MP but I sent it back to Amazon as I didn't like it. I've always liked the SOG for their pliers and the fact that I could flick it open like a butterfly knife. I'f they pulled their fingers out and went with a magnetic interchangeable tool system, they' have a winner. I think my old SOG powergrip I had was made in USA. I'm not that happy that they outsourced. I'm going to have a look at the goat tools range and maybe I'll be tempted. BTW, you should look at the code 118 card holder system. It's what I carry. No fanning out cards, you simply slide the button and out they pop. I have the accessory plate and elastic strap which I keep dosh or points cards in.

  • Gerber MP 600 bladeless is such a good companion it is robust and all importantly LIGHT enough for daily carry, take anywhere, and half the time I dont even need to open it just use the pliers head to open packages, pry, or pop bottles.

  • The Roxon looks very promising, easy to upgrade with a better blade steel. I wish, one would come up with something, that puts all the best ideas in ONE tool, like the blade of the Wave in S35VN or Magnacut, the pliers of the SOG Power Access with the rotating hard wire cutters of the GOAT, the exchangeable saw blade and the exchangeable T-shank diamond file of the Leatherman Surge. A ratcheting short bit-extender would make it just perfect - sweet dreams in lonely hours. Thanks for your high quality content Jon.

  • Nice to see some different brands recommend, because i dont like the leatherman pliers. Im not a fan of non spring loaded ones. Edit: i might have to pick up one of the roxon tools, the phantom and some of the other ones youve shown look pretty nice, fit my needs, and my budget.

  • With the Juice, Squirt, and now also the Micra being discontinued, I'd be much more interested in high quality alternatives in a small form factor. Is there anything out there that has a similarly high quality to the discontinued Leathermans? The Gerber Dime is the most well known alternative but AFAIK, the plier head doesn't come to as precise a tip as pretty much every Leatherman out there, which makes me doubt the precision of the manufacturing overall.

    • @@franknobody5965 You would normally open the tool, for example, by holding the whole tool in your hand and using your thumb (inserted into the "cutout") to swing open a particular implement (saw or knife for instance). For other tools you put your thumbnail or fingernail into a notch to open that implement. You might find it helpful to watch some KZhead videos of the Leatherman in actual use.

  • Appreciate the video. I use to own a Gerber back in the 90s. Got a lot of use out of it. I remember the tool occasionally pinching my hand when using the pliers. I now own the Wave, Surge and soon a Wave+. With the flat bits which I carry with me I feel it is hard to beat. The design of their system allows you to carry and have many options easily. I do like the look of the SOG and also the GOAT. The Victorinox looks fantastic but I have never been a fan of their blades. The design of their blades look cheap on all their products. Just not a fan. Once again, thanks for the video. Overall, I still prefer Leatherman.

  • The SOG is hands down the best multi tool on the market. I have the leatherman wave, super tool and OHT. I also have the Gerber center drive. The SOG power access pliers hold onto what ever you are working on so much stronger they almost never slip off. If anyone has used the wave much you know when the pliers slip it pinches your hand and it hurts a lot. The rest of the tools on the SOG are easy to access. I am a handyman and I use my multi tool everyday. I will never go back to leatherman of gerber unless they come out with something better then the SOG.

  • I totally agree with the last competitor being the only real one. IN fact, I consider the Spirit to be clearly better than the wave. My personal favorite is the (now discontinued) Spirit S, since the scissors in the Spirit are a bit worse than those in SAKS, of which I usually carry one in addition and as a complement. But if one goes the step not longer to search for the single best multitool, but for the most capable COMBINATION of two (better smaller ones), then everything is changed. One of my preferred combos are Leatherman Crunch plus either a 111mm or 93 mm SAK with saw and pliers. If a third component was allowed in a team comparison., so to say, take a Knipex Cobra 125 or even 150 mm, and you are really ready to go!

  • I was surprised to see the Victorinox Compact knife. It’s been my EDC carry for 5+ years and I never see it included in lists. I have two modifications. The first is mine came with an eye glass screw driver twisted into the Cork screw which has come in handy. The second is I replaced the tooth pick with a ferro rod. I have been curious if I could trade out the bag hook for a better file.

  • Imagine if SOG left that driver bit secure without the handle needing to be closed... they have a torque drivers there and it cant be used... that would be super helpful in the shop for small screws you cant risk the drill or press on..

  • The Goat Tool: Is it possible to put the blade to an inner slot? In Germany you are not allowed to carry knives that can be opened with one hand and that lock into place. If I can put the blade inside, it can still lock, what's useful, but I can no longer fold it out with one hand and I can always have the multitool with me.

  • I do own the phantom, however what I would like is its updated version with the bit driver, also The only thing that victorinox have is the L Shape Bit driver, which is capable and complementary to their multitools. I kind of preferred the storm due to the fact it does have the 1/4 inch driver while having most of the benefits of the phantom. Although the phantom does have one handed opening pliers which isn't all the multitool who does that, including leathermans, which only have that with the free series and does it without magnets. As for budget multitools the black knight is one of the bests. But I also found many other budget alternatives to leatherman, that despite leatherman still doing great quality stuff, I mean most chinese multitools doesn't have the best materials, but they have some things that beats certain leathermans just like the big scissors, standard bit drivers and so on. I think the SOG is one of the most intereting as well with the pliers and also the Gerber Dual Force. And as I would like to say I wish leatherman do a bigger version of the crunch because that would be unique. It will offer a big locking plier and somewhat compact multitool excellent for HVAC techs and plumbers.

  • Based on Jon's comment about the "ingenious 1/4 inch bit holder" of the SOG, I bought one. Actually I bought 2, one for me and one for a friend. Both of us use 1/4" bits often for our bikes. Well, the 1/4" bit holder is clever but it doesn't work. If you try to apply torque, just from your hand, the bit simply slips. I then figured my SOG had a manufacturing defect and tried my friend's. Same issue. I would have thought that Jon would actually try the tools in the field before describing them. An unboxing video is one thing but a true comparison video needs a higher standard than just comparing things like blade length and tool weight.
