  • Just received a phalaenopsis orchid as a university graduation present, never been able to keep plants alive before but this one is just too beautiful to let die. I'm so glad I found these videos, I'm definitely looking forward to keeping this orchid alive, thanks to your tips :)

  • Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I will water as suggested above and see if that helps. I guess I just have to be patient and hope for a full recovery on my Phalaenopsis Orchids. I have one plant that is doing great. But it is one I did not repot. I left it in its original plastic container and it is packed in moss but doing well. Guess they are all different. Thanks for all your videos. Very helpful! :)

  • Hey there! You know what is really weird? The orchids in america are planted in very flemzy plastic-rubber pots and they are packed with spagnum moss, while our orchids in Lithuania are sold in wood bark, not in spagnum moss, and the pot is made of very stirdy plastic, with many holes in them, so when you buy orchids, you don't have to replant them, they just are happy in their bark. I have one orchid that is 5 yrs old now, and now it is seriously huge orchid! she is climbing out of that small pot, and has very much airial roots, one of them is 22 cm long!!! and she has 9 leaves like my hand long! no roots are rotting, and I won't replant her from her original pot, she looks fantasticly in that small pot! (not to mension that roots are coming from the bottom of the pot) but still, she is happy, and she is ridicously humongous! and also, she has two spikes, and the flowers are not so humongous, just the size as regular orchid, yellow with red middle - that's how the blooms looks like :3

  • Thank you for watching. There is no definate answer to your question... it really depends on your watering techniques. If you know that the moss is packed in there tight do your best to watch the moisture levels. and only give your plant water when the moss feels dry... remember that the core of the root ball might still be moist if the surface is dry. feel free to leave the plant in the moss until the flowering is finished. at that time it would be good to re pot :) I hope i could help

  • I'm happy to hear that.. I too got bored of my Phal's... the Phat's need a temp drop at night to get the bloom spike to set. thats why you see the blooms in the spring and fall... i used to grow mine close to the window so they received that night time temp drop needed

  • I have two Phalaenopsis ( one purple and a big yellow one ) and it's a fantastic plant, it blooms 3 or 4 months long but I grow them in transparent pots in order to see when I should water ; when the roots get grey or white I water and they turn green for a week and a half :) Nice vid :p

  • Thanks :) i hope you do try them again. i really like the oncidium. i find they have interrest even when not in bloom. the pseudobulbs fasinate me. and the new growth is pretty cool too. the Phal's tend to bore me a little... they seem to almost look the same between flower spikes...

  • This Phal is doing wonderful! The Phal and the Vanda are the ones responding the best to the hydroton media. I just recently started mixing mediums (Terracotta Balls and coconut husk :)) it's working very will so far. I'm sure that the plants get some nutrients from the media however the water soluble fertilizer is still the best way. I soak the terracotta balls for at least a few hours before using them.. i'm sure it's not necessary.

  • in germany those phalenopsis are sold in containers filled with bark like you show in the second half of the video. this actually works fine at my moms house. i never had luck with those. altough it's really crazy that they sell those in moss like u showed. I really like the informational part of the video! you think the really need the fertilizer at the rootsystem? I've read that they take their nutrients through the leaves (at least they do that in their natural habitat)

  • Helllooo, first off, love that you picked that up for $5!! Well found! We have a few different orchid's and there's a couple that seem to need re-potting. I just read, further down, that it's best to re-pot when not in bloom, but ours don't seem to have STOPPED flowering. So I'm not entirely sure when I'll be able to do it - one of them seems to be getting rather top heavy and I'm pretty sure It'll be worse if it falls over and the whole plant gets damaged,,, We've had two for almost two years now, and they've had flowers the whole time - I'm now realising that's probably not normal but have NO idea what to do with them.

    • I have an orchid (phal) as well that seems to never be out of spike... each time I think I have a chance to repot... I see another spike starting..lol.. I suppose there are worse problems to have..lol.. some times you just need to repot.. just try your best not to damage the roots too much and cross your fingers.

  • Yay Indeed. this time around i am looking for variety. that might keep my interrest more as each one will have a different look and flowering time :) Both Oncidium and Vanda are lovely choices... Vanda requires more light and humidity than Oncidium.. though i have found that my vanda is a hardy little devil.. i have had no flowers yet... but i bought it as a seedling.. flowers will take a while :)

  • Hi Bill! I have been watching your repotting videos. I want to confirm that I am repotting correctly. The orchids I have were packed in moss and had significant root damage when I removed them from plastic cup. I cleaned out gross moss &cut off dead roots. I put orchids back in cup and filled with bark and a little bit of moss. (did not soak b4) Then put in clay pot. Some leaves are now wrinkled. It seems like they are not retaining water. They are always dry. What am I doing wrong?

  • Thank you! This will be vey helpful for when all the flowers fall off. But I would like to ask something: My Orchid has a tight plastic thing on it and it is hard to get off, but I can. But once I have all the things ready, should I put my orchid back in the plastic which will be challenging, or just put it in the little pot? I don't know because I was once told that if they are not put in a tight pot or ya they will not flower for a long time. What do I do?

  • Glad to see this is working for you, but this is not really Semi Hydroponics. S/H implies there is a reservoir on the bottom with some drain holes and the hydroton wicks the moisture up from the bottom. If all the water drains out its not exactly S/H. Check out first rays orchids for a resource on semi hydroponics.

  • I want to say that i do.. But the real answer is usually not.. I don't have a specific brand that i use either.. as long as it's for orchids i'll give it a try. i will fertilize a little more often when the plant is actively growing... and sometimes if i have some extra housplant fertilizer left in my watering can i might even use that on the orchids too.. however thats not that often :)

    • After dealing with the terra cotta balls for a year.. I honestly like using orchid bark best... trial and error makes all the difference. HOWEVER, if you still want to try some google a hydroponics supply store in your area and ask for Hydroton. some high end garden centers might carry them too.

    • Bluefootbrownboob - A medium/coarse bark mix works really well for phals. i usually add in a hand full of sphagnum moss to hold a little moisture. Phals don't like their roots to stay moist for long periods. they seem to rot. i let my phals dry between waterings..

    @CosmeticFanatic@CosmeticFanatic11 жыл бұрын
  • I wouldn't be surprised if they pack it in to force the plant to go into stress and bloom. Some tropical plants like bird of paradise will only bloom if their roots are crowded. It's like the orchids are set up for you to buy it cause of the bloom and not for longterm. I'm going to repot mine and see if it rejuvenates them.

  • I wish they were sold in bark here. as much as i like to add some moss to my mix. the amount they use in the stores here spell death for sure.. the plants stay wet for too long.. as for fertilizing.. i think in the home environment the roots are the best way to feed... but if they were outside or in a greenhouse feeding the leaves and roots would likely be beneficial. you just need to watch out for crown rot from sitting water.

All flowers was gone before i realized the orchid could be wrongly labeled. I think the flowers had same overall shape like this one in the video. My question is: Do you think i need to rest the plant ( in other word - let the pot medium dry all out) before i start watering and feeding it?

  • are you repotting Phalaenopsis? you did the right thing by cutting away the damaged and yucky roots. and removing the tight packed moss. how do you water your plant? when i use bark i like to submerge the pot in water up to the top of the bark mix and let it soak for about 10 min and them drain the excess water out. and then water again when the bark feels dry. your plant is stresses out and might need to be kept on the damp side until new healthy roots develop. Good luck :)

  • I am pretty successful with growing orchids and getting them to re-grow, however, I am stumped with one of mine. I trimmed the spike above a node as I typically do, but this orchid was being stubborn and wouldn't grow (left it for year). I decided to cut it back more, it did the same thing but this time the spike started to turn brown. I the cut the brown part off above the next node... And repeated. Now there is no spike! The orchid has healthy leaves and roots, growing leaves but no spike. What is up with my stubborn orchid?

    @MELISSA604@MELISSA6049 жыл бұрын
    • Melissa Shim Not all flower spikes will produce secondary spikes.. sounds like you'll need to wait for your plant to send up a brand new spike from the base.

      @PlantzNThings@PlantzNThings9 жыл бұрын
    • Did you repot the orchid to know what the shape your roots are in? Your orchid could be sick but you not know it because you can't see the roots. If it is years old then the potting medium could be breaking down or even rotting with mold.

  • Hi, I'm sorry to bother but I couldn't find a video on cutting back the stem after the blooms have died off. I saw some other people cut very low on the stem, almost down to the leaves. Is that where I should cut my stem? If you have a video going over this, feel free to just post that. Also, I had a leaf die and I just ripped it off with my fingers. I did that before I saw you write about sterilizing the scissors, etc. Wondering if I should maybe go back in with some sizzors and clean off the rip a little bit. Thanks again!

    @JessicaWarrenArt@JessicaWarrenArt9 жыл бұрын
    • Sorry for the late reply. I can make a video on where to the flower spikes on phal's when they finish blooming. as for removing leaves... if the leaf is dry and crispy you can pull it off with little issue... however if the leaf is still green and juicy I would go in with sterilized scissors.

  • When is a good time of the year to re-pot my orchid?

    @denisebrown3278@denisebrown327810 жыл бұрын
    • anytime when not in bloom. each type seems to bloom at different times. so it's the easiest way to figure out when to repot :)

  • Your leaf discoloration is due to high sunlight . Change the place and you would be ok.
