David and Suzanne want to sell their nine-acre property in Bardon Mill, Northumberland, to start a full-time equestrian centre on a larger farm. But despite shaving £50,000 off the price, they’ve had just five viewings in a year, and not a single offer. While the idyllic setting features four stalls, spectacular views, and a picturesque village nearby, the three-bedroom home’s soulless, charm-free interiors are a major turnoff complete with peeling wallpaper, purposeless rooms, and dated, mismatched furniture.
Enter real estate experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They vow to boost the home’s prospects. And while John beefs up the marketing effort and encourages better communication with the agent, Sofie brings in lots of light and charm with a contemporary design plan that yields impressive results. Will their efforts attract a horse-loving family to Bardon Mill?

    • The owners have been living with it for so long they no longer see the problems. And MOST people have zero imagination for how a 3-D space can work. You have to rub their noses on the window and tell them to notice the views.

    • I agree! If the kitchen and bathroom are not holding back the sale, at least they should talk about why. If they are not particular showy, at least give us a glimpse. This house looks huge from the outside. It is very frustrating for the viewer to be denied a look at the rest of it. The only lessons to be gained here - If you have a dark interior, paint it white or beige.

In the after photos, several electrical chords were showing inside the house and it would look so much better if they were hidden or tacked to the walls near the carpet.

    • 9 acres seems like a ton if you have to mow it but when you consider stables, tack area, rings, grazing pasture and a human(s) home, it doesn't amount to much. I worked on a 71 acre farm here in NJ that mainly housed trotters with the occasional thoroughbred thrown in. It had a beautiful training track and a shallow pool (for injuries). My cousin has 10 acres (also NJ) with just his home, a cpl small rings for riding lessons, and stables. There's a Girl Scout camp nearby and many take lessons thru the summer. Horses (and even wee teaser ponies) take up a lot of space. 🏇🐎🐴

The gardens were beautiful and the land plentiful but the house lacked any style such as stonework etc. It looked very 1960's and was lacking charm. I thought Sofie might have started outside and suggested a handrail on the outdoor steps. I would have also painted the bricks on the extension white to blend in with the rest of the house. It sticks out like the proverbial dog's whatnots. The rest of it was fairly predictable as in painting/re carpeting, hiding that ugly fake beam by painting it etc. The RE Agent was unmotivated and a bit lazy. She needed to tell them what needed to be done to get a sale even if it meant spending a few pounds it might have got them the original asking price.

The spare room is pretty, but to me, the office is too drastic for a wide audience. As for marketing, I think it should be listed locally, in equestrian postings, and city papers. It should appeal to a broad spectrum with each ads having a different focus (dog lovers, bed and breakfast entrepreneurs, home business operators, work shop /mechanic space, hikers, country living, etc.).

  • The dark wood casework doesn't bother me, but it is not arranged to its best advantage and the open bookshelves appear "cluttered." The rug didn't offend me, it looks like a high quality Wilton weave - they last forever. The furniture arrangement was AWFUL! The empty "bedroom" - far too small to be anything other than either a walk-in closet or an office. I understand this is an old show from 2008, but as a potential seller I would want to know how much the changes cost, what was done with the "old" furnishings and case goods - were they trashed, were they put into storage? And exactly how long did it REALLY take to make the changes shown in each episode? A special complaint - it drives me crazy when these shows pile up unused stuff in a garage! Buyers look inside the garage too, you know. The LAST damn thing they want to see is it loaded to the rafters with crappy looking and old furniture!

    • Apparently this took £500. The dark wood furniture was painted white. The old sofa was taken away.

  • Am I the only one who skips through all of John Rennie's boring segments with townspeople and the realtor? He adds nothing to the video. More Sofie and the owners, more rooms made over.

    • But he does "in depth" research on the area! John R: So do you like living around here? Random #1: Oh yes, people are very nice. It's quiet. Random #2: We have shops and schools and everything. Random #3: I wouldn't live anywhere else! John R: And there you have it! I have discovered that this is a great area to live.

  • Instead of framing dated wallpaper scraps, why the H don't they find some of the fabulous horse art prints that the Brits love? They would have been much more upscale and appealing to viewers. "contemporary" only lasts about a year in today's world. Classic suggests more money. And a country place should also have dogs. She didn't need to sneer at the little figurines, just move them elsewhere in the house. I do hope there's another entrance than the sunroom, the beige carpet won't last a week in a wet horsy environment.

  • Nah, I bet they're still there after 11 years, well, if they haven't divorced due to stress and inertia, and I'll wager the horses have long since gone to the bone yard. Then again, it's so remote and the winters can be so harsh up in Northumberland that it probably turned into The Shining, the father pursuing the family round the farm with an axe, but I've always been a glass-half-empty kinda person. I liked the feature wall in the bedroom though.
