Now almost every person you meet either likes k-pop or knows someone who likes k-pop. It wasn’t a one-night rise, it was a slow process that took decades.

    • @@jungkook_thinker OMG I knew this was what you wanted. There was a time I would have said “BTS would be so ashamed that their fan talks like that about the seniors they respect” but lately I feel like BTS themselves got high on their success. I won’t bother engaging more in a debate with a pitiful ARMY like you. But I will say you are welcome to do some research about the global success of TVXQ, Wonder Girls, SNSD and many others. And by global I’m not talking only about the USA (newsflash: the world is more than just South Korea and USA). Better get yourself educated before you start pretending to not be the crazy BTS-obsessed 14 yo that you probably are.

    • If they had to include Taeyang, they should've done it with Eyes Nose Lips, which can actually be considered as one of the greatest most loved solo works in K-Pop. I think Ringa Linga can definitely be left off in this list. IU's Good Day needs to be on here.

  • For those who are pressed about many of the 3rd and 4th Gen groups not really getting love. I think you should really pay attention to what is being said and why the list was made. it is literally trying to educate people on how K-pop groups and solo artists of 1st Gen and 2nd Gen helped to create and innovate K-pop that ultimately helped bring it from a new genre created in the 90's, into the 2000's, into the early 2010's. Many of the groups and individuals made their mark in some way that kept pushing and helping this genre to grow and thrive to what it is today. So while it sucks not to see some of our fave 3rd and 4th gens on the list, this list is great for those who really are getting to know and learn about K-Pop and how these previous gen groups and solo really influenced the folks who came behind them. These are artist you faves listened to and inspired them to become idols themselves. So if you come to complain then you failed the assignment and are ignoring why these groups and solo artists and these songs that were picked contributed to the K-pop landscape.

It actually was banned for many years from being played during exam time. BTW, you could make an entire video on the influence, number of firsts in K-Pop, and iconic nature of SHINee from their debut through today. And that's not even touching on a whole other entire video you could make on SHINee's Taemin and his own influence on K-Pop.

  • in my opinion, Gangham Style is what put kpop on the map for me. Hell, I never even heard of Kpop before this song. Then, a few years later (after watching this and a few other Psy vids) I had a few YT suggestions of Twice videos and SNSD vids and I was hooked on kpop. Covid also helped in a weird kind of way. Now, I watch more kpop than I do pop music. absolutely love the videos. Red Velvet, SNSD, Twice, Itzy, BTS...man there is a lot of great kpop music. I wish America would be less biased when listening to music. They have a lot of enjoyable, catchy tunes!

    • @@angiee1603 All companies are problematic ;) All of them are abusing children to find the next star. All of them make contracts, that are based on making the best profits for the company and not on the well-being of a human. All of them have ridiculous schedules that make people ill. There is a reason why female idols say things like "if my daughter wants to become an idol, i would never let that happen". I love kpop, but i hate that the artist, that i adore, are always on the brink of being destroyed...

    • @jennifergreen6510 I don't think Big Hit is much better. They also work their artists to the point of exhaustion. When I first started seriously listening to Kpop, the first group I got into was BTS. There were videos of the guys being super exhausted. Suga falling asleep while standing, two of the guys sleeping on what seemed to be a dressing room floor. There was also Suga's shoulder injury that took way too long to handle. They guys not getting days off. They may not be the worst company, but they aren't good either. They treat their artists like products too.

  • *Please read this (from a fan of K-Pop for almost 2 decades)* For those who don't understand... It takes time for a song to be considered amongst the greatest in any genre. You need to understand what those particular songs did for the entire genre in terms of the sound, the trends, the popularity and building the base of K-Pop as we know it today. The reason why most artists of recent times are not here is because 1. Their songs haven't had the time to truly make an impact on the genre as a whole. 2. Even though the songs might be amazing musically, they didn't really do much in terms of creating and popularising new trends, which is what K-Pop basically is. The *2nd Generation* is where K-Pop truly found its identity. The artists in that era helped shape the genre in every way possible. That being said, this is a veeerryy watered down basic list that tries to appeal to everyone. Anyone who has been a deep K-Pop fan for more than a decade can probably think of many artists and songs that haven't been mentioned. And I'm talking about the ones who truly shaped the genre into what it is today. *'I KNOW' by Seo Taiji and Boys* has to be considered the greatest K-Pop song ever because that was the exact moment K-Pop was born. It was the first seed and turned out to be amongst the most legendary hits in Korean music that shaped an entire generation and shifted the course of normal folk Korean songs to Western-inspired Hip Hop and Pop elements with choreography. *Fantastic Baby* is second for me and you can't really get its greatness unless you actually know what it did for K-Pop. It was the first truly international hit in the genre that got attention from the West and major publications. It wasn't really viral internationally because of a single trend and sound (like Nobody by Wonder Girls) but simply appreciated as a standalone song and video. It hit every mark. That was the exact moment K-Pop shifted from 2nd Generation to 3rd Generation. There is a huuuggge difference in the sound of K-Pop before Fantastic Baby and after Fantastic Baby. There's a huggee difference in music videos and fashion before Fantastic Baby and after it. Not only that the choreography for the song became extremely popular and still widely known and imitated. It was the first true EDM party banger that changed the sound of K-Pop completely. And I am an avid hater of Gee ever since the day it came out I'm sorry 😂. One of the worst sounding hits ever created in K-Pop in my honest opinion. Although it was EXTREMELY POPULAR and iconic, it ushered in a very weird phase of K-Pop. Where you had artists compromising music for the sake of acting like complete cutesy babies with angel like expressions. I strongly believe the greatest Girl's Generation song is *'Into The New World'* and that would be my third pick. Not only was the introduction to perhaps the most legendary K-Pop girl group, it resonated on so many levels with the youth of that era and became somewhat of an anthem and is STILL sung today widely.
