DeTomaso Mangusta - Perfect as is? | Chip Foose Draws a Car - Ep. 18

Italian carmaker De Tomaso was well known for their Pantera sports car, but the Mangusta was both the Pantera's predecessor and named after an animal that's a natural predator to snakes like the venomous cobra. While this Italian sports car may or may not be a "cobra killer" in real life, there's no doubt it has a long, sleek and elegant design that Chip Foose appreciates. So let's see what he can do for this forgotten piece of Italian history.

    • That is Italian car designs from the Fifties and Sixties, they are all perfect and they aren't only cars, but they are in a group where don't need to change them because they are that good. Like a 1957 Ferrari GTO, you don't need to change it because you can't improve it.

  • The Mangusta is one of those cars that I have a love / hate feelings. Just like Foose my father bought me a model of that car. I always loved the design since I was 9 years old. One of my elementary school childhood friend Franco's father had 2 Italian sport cars. He owned a 1969 Maserati Ghibli and 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta. Franco's dad had his own construction company (typical Italian lol) and owned few apartment buildings. I recall his dad driving him to school in his red Ghibli and naturally all the boys drooled over that car. Lucky for me that Franco and I were close friends (am also Italian) so we got along much better. One time after school we went to his home and that when I saw his dad also had a Mangusta. LOVE at first sight lol. Ok ok I drooled. As much as I loved and rode in the Ghibli I had a weakness for the Mangusta (I now realized I never rode in that one) lol His father told me work smart and hard and you also can achieve your dreams. Franco and I would work for his dad during summer vacation cutting the lawns to his properties. $10 Dollars was alot for us 9 year olds a May West was a dime then lol. Fast forward 23 years later 1992 at age 32 I bought my Condo close to my childhood neighborhood for 130K. Few months later down the Boulevard less then 2 miles away, there was an independent gas station with a white Mangusta half covered for sale. One day after work I decided to go check it out, and asked the garage owner how much was he selling it for? He replied the car wasn't his and that it belongs to a widow who's selling it because of her husbands death. He gives me her number. Two days later I called and asked her how much was she selling it for? She replied $5000, like an idiot I ask her are you sure? She replies yes and asks me if I think shes asking too much for it? (Part of me wanted to say yes damn too much) lol She asks if I was interested I replied yes that i would need to go take a look at it again. So I go back to the gas station and ask the owner if I can remove the car cover completely in order to see the whole car. From the rear louvers to the back end the car was burned (engine fire I suppose) I hesitated. I talked to my older brother to get his opinion he came with me and looked at it (Big Mistake, my brother always has a negative mindset) He says why you want to spend $5000 on a car that burned it will cost you much more to fix. Now I have more doubts about buying it. That car was at the gas station lot for 5 freaking months. On that 5th month I had a High School reunion, and a childhood friend of mine, Mark, had his own mechanic/bodyshop business. I told mark I needed his professional advice and we went to see the car together. He looked at it over carefully we even asked the station owner if we can lift the car, to inspect under the car. Mark looked at it, said the body is no big deal can easily repair that, that the main frame is also in good condition. Said the engine you can either fix/rebuild or swap it. Mark told me just buy it and we will work out a budget and fix it in steps. I was super happy. The next day I go to the bank and make a certified cheque, I head to the gas station and I see this lady and some older guy looking over the car with the gas station owner. I had no idea she was the widow (thought it was the guys wife.) Finally The a-hole leaves (the beginning of my hate) lol I see the gas station owner and he introduces me to the widow. I was like Oh thought you were the gentleman's wife. I tell her glad to meet you I've decided to buy the car, here is a certified cheque for $5000. She replies I am so sorry that gentleman just bought the car. I just went numb, even thought of jumping in front of a city bus hahaha. You would think I learned my lesson, fast forward 13 yrs 2005, there was a used NSX great condition for 25K I hesitated again. 3rd time is a charm 1994 SL500 for 8K I saw I get it inspected I bought it all within 2 hours, and still have it to this day. Now I'm 61 yrs old, my 130K condo is worth $500k and that $5000 Mangusta (Could have been my Retirement Fund) is now worth between 185K to 320K (someone please shoot me.) Also another moral, never ask your pessimist big brother for any advice. I lost out on the Mangusta, and Cell Phones in its infancy. I asked him hey Raymond what do you think if I open a cell phone business? He replied are you crazy who going to spend $3000 (brick cell phones) only the rich people can afford, fast forward the whole world have them. His birthday is on April 2 he'll be 66, I'll punch him 2 times. 1 for making me hesitate on the mangusta and other for cell phone industry. lol.

  • I saw a Mangusta at Seabrook Beach, NH three years ago. It was out for a morning drive. Blue and with that rumbling V8. I knew it is extremely rare. And a delight to see it. Once in a lifetime not ever to be seen again. Stunning! Also those French curves Mr. Foose employs are just as sleek. Just as old school. PS I am very old. And since a kid I too prefer the sleek Mangusta over the more baroque and busy Pantera.

  • As a longtime Pantera owner, I think the Mangusta is one of the most beautiful auto designs of all time even if its driving characteristics were not as stellar. I was down at Pantera International Motorsports about a week ago, and they've got a couple of them down there that they're working on. Just as striking in person as in a drawing. Foose's "less is more" approach to this car earns him a lot of respect from me. Love the color!

  • Long time admirer of the Foose Design Ethos. Polarizing. Trend setting. Intriquing. One master, REDIFINES a modern masterpiece? The Mangusta? Its truth has withstood your careful scrutiny and shone most brightly. Markerlight relocation. Stance, wheeel, color change. Subtle and modern. Color accents the lines better. The gills behind the door windows appear more attractive as well. Steve Mcqueen would drive this in the Italian version of Bullit. Get one and do it Chip!

  • I went to design school and changed my life because of Chip Foose sketches hanging on the wall of my work place. It was 1998 and I was working as a grunt at a car prototyping place in Santa Barbara. They had some of Chip's sketches on the wall that looked like early Prowler concepts. I would always ask the boss ablout them, who drew them, how he learned how to ect. I ended up working my tail off and going to design school. Chip is a great inspiration!

I went to Graduate School at an Art College and my roommate for my first year was also in the Graduate Program studying Graphic Design and I remember his drawings and art style being very similar. His work was brilliant and he later became an Instructor there as well as working in the industry. The skills he was being taught then we're both in this tradition but he also was learning all sorts of stuff with Photoshop simultaneously. I still love seeing this style of art practiced by a master and showcased here. I am going to have to research this car more. I hope the interior is as nice as the outside. It is really a work of art and engineering.

  • Haha, yeah that lime green metallic was on everything 'bout 1970 including my winning entry in a model contest local to your shop. Yes the Mangusta looks much more sinister in a dark color which you never see them in. You might have John Player-ed it up a bit with satin brass wheels and trim but I like the rendering as is. If I knew my way around a marker like you I would have made that kit car-ish looking marker light a long sliver and made the door handle the same like those dope flip out 300sl gullwing ones. I worked with a guy ages ago who sold his Mangusta to pursue his dream of building a 3 wheeled enclosed Honda powered futuristic looking vehicle called the Phantom (Ron Will).

Personally I would prefer the original One. It's the better Design. I'm also a big Fan of the Mangusta, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ghia, and see it clearly ahead of the later Pantera, designed by Tom Tjaarda. Because I can not afford a Mangusta these Days, I'm owning a Maserati GranTurismo (MY 2018), also a big Hit from Italy and a great Design by Jason Castriota under the Guidance of Frank Stephenson. Both are excellent Designers too.

  • I agree with you Chip, the C8 could have been a beautiful car much like the Mangusta. I was hoping they would go back to their mid engine prototypes that have that simple elegant design. I was hoping they would use curves not angles. The C8 has grown on me but it could have been a show stopper going back to basics without over designing.
