Brand New 2022 Mercury 115hp CT - How to run in & first impressions!!
In this video, we show you how to run in/break in a brand new Mercury four-stroke 115hp CT boat motor, and talk about our first impressions.
It is being put on the back of a Haines Hunter V17C. In terms of the motor, the CT stands for command thrust.
After having the Johnson 115 two-stroke for a whopping 29 years, in 2022 it was finally time to upgrade to a new engine and we are very excited to use the new Mercury. It should open up a lot of new fishing opportunities for us, as well as keeping us safe out on the water.

After watching this video many many times we upgraded our 90hp 2 stroke mercury and got the 115ct mercury. Amazing improvement in performance and handling and literally 50% more fuel efficient. Cheers from NZ

Good seeing the old boy wheeling the old family boat with a brand new mercury I think he contained his excitement ! He was loving it … Its great that you stuck with the old beast and kept it in the family , I’ve got a nautiglass V150 half cab , very similar to your boat , I haven’t had mine that long but already know I won’t be letting it go ! G’day Andrew, thanks so much for the comment mate! Yes, he bought it with his Dad (my grandad) who has since passed, so the boat means a lot to us. I’m very lucky to have grown up with such a great boat, which is great for everything we like to do. We can fish right up in the shallows for whiting, or head 20km+ offshore chasing snapper and so on. Every time we take it for a service or something, they always say “wow, never get rid of this boat!” That’s awesome to hear you just got a fairly new fibreglass half cab, it sounds like an absolute cracker mate! I bet you’ll make some great memories in it, they are so much smoother than anything aluminium. And the half cab should keep you nice and dry too 👍 Enjoy your time on the water Andrew! G’day Nathan thanks for the comment! We are keen too. You can already tell it’s going to be MUCH quieter and better on fuel than the last motor was. It has a few other helpful features like a fuel gauge (which the old motor didn’t have) and no need for a bottle of oil sitting down the back of the boat and stuff like that. That looks absolutely amazing Mate. I love my 4 stroke even it is just a tiny 20 hp. I love the fact that I can talk to the others in the boat without having to yell. (Oh and I bought another go anywhere inflatable since your last video) So now I can fish for those elusive bigger fish.

We thinking of going for this very one for our rib. Been running an etec on it for past 15 years and it's been fine...punchy. but bits keep breaking...emm, flywheel and now gbox going, so I think it's time. Excited to see this vid. Well done getting that long out the Johnson. I used to run a Johnson vro 70, I think it was.....mechanic told me VRO stood for very rarely operational..... Cheers from Scotland
Hi mate, thanks so much for the comment all the way from Scotland! Yes I think you’d really like the Mercury on your rib. We got this particular one as Mercury are one of the lightest four strokes on the market, and our boat naturally sits a bit lower at the back anyway. Even though it’s light, as you can see they have plenty of power, are quiet, and VERY fuel efficient. We’re getting just over 2km per litre. The old Johnson was great - very well looked after the whole time, but similar to your etec we were thinking “sooner or later it could just give up on us out at sea”. I’m glad you found the video helpful and I hope you enjoy whichever new motor you decide to buy mate! Cheers 👍😁

Awesome looking motor 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍. I had a four stroke mercury 60 when I had my boat and I’d recommend putting a good fuel filter on if you haven’t already. I had a lot of drama with dirty fuel getting into the fuel pump chamber and took me a long time to sort it out

Sweet update to the motor, gent's and thanks for the video! I'd be interested in how you think it compares to your old motor, weight and performance. I mentioned to my wife a couple of days ago that I'd like to upgrade my 33 yr old Mariner 45 hp to a Mercury 50 HP Four Stroke and she said, why don't you get a new boat! Went to the local dealer and she found a nice 18 ft. (5m?) Lund that she liked with the standard Mercury 115 hp. Boat prices have gone up quite a bit over the past 30+ years; in a bit of a price shock right now but going in next week to talk and hopefully make the purchase. I'm out here on youtube trying to educate myself on the new motor. Have to wait for 5 months for the ice to come off the local lakes before I'll be able to run in the new motor/boat, though.
Hey Ross, sorry for the late reply mate! I’ve been on a holiday without internet access. The new motor has been absolutely awesome, it uses half the fuel (or even less some days) and is extremely quiet too!! It pushes the boat along super easy too, since it has the CT (command thrust). We went with the Mercury because it’s probably the lightest fourstroke compared to other brands, and our boat naturally sits a bit lower at the back already. It’s just okay thankfully👌 That’s exciting to hear about your new boat and motor mate! Ours is 17ft which is about 5.1 metres I believe, so yours would be around the same! Mercury is a good choice and I’ll have to google the boat and have a watch of some videos, sounds awesome! 😁 Far out it seems cold where you are! Whereabouts are you based mate? Good pick.. I've got the 90ct on my 5.2 plenty of torque everywhere good fuel economy. Best I get is 2.4 to 2.5 km per L cruising from 18 to 21 knots an wot 33knot 1.7/1.8km per L

is it a good idea to cover the engine cover like that ? Ive seen it on small engines ( low HP ) big ones humm.. I don't know. btw , mine is just like yours.
Will, do you get alot of water coming over the back at rest offshore? My old cruise craft is constantly wet at the back
G’day mate, we do get a little bit of water splashing into the back well on days that are particularly choppy, but on calm days it’s pretty good. That’s mostly why we went for the Mercury though, as the boat naturally sits lower at the back (the same as your cruise craft by the sounds of it). The Mercury was lighter than other brands like Yamaha for example. The Merc has been awesome though! Cheers mate and tight lines 👍🎣

Have you still got the boat? I have a 5.2 qith 115ct and the fuel economy is very poor. How is yours going and what prop do you have
Hi mate! Yes we still have the same boat and motor combo. Our boat is 17 feet long with the 115ct. It’s going really well for us! That’s interesting that your fuel economy isn’t very good! We are getting just over 2km per litre, compared to 1km per litre with our old 2 strike motor. Our prop is: stainless steel Mercury Enertia prop. The writing on the prop says: 14.0 X 19P RH We also just cruise when we are on the plane, at around 4000 to 4500 rpm if I remember correctly. We don’t zoom around as fast as we possibly can most of the time, especially when offshore in a bit of swell and stuff. I hope this helps, thanks for watching 🙌

G’day mate, that’s awesome that you’re looking at buying a boat/motor! The Mercury has been absolutely awesome since we got it, can’t fault it yet! It’s a lot quieter than the old 2 stroke which is good, and also way more fuel efficient. We’re using just less than half the fuel we did with the 2 stroke, getting just over 2km per litre. The old motor was 1km per litre. It’s been reliable and runs very smoothly, and the fact that’s it’s a CT means it’s got so much power and pushes our fibreglass boat along easily. The CT gets you up and going fast, and is great for going through the bars too because as soon as you put the throttle down, the boat just takes off. I reckon having the CT also helps lower the fuel consumption. Ours is up to just over 100 hours now, and we love it. Hope this helps mate, thanks for watching and enjoy your time on the water!! 👍

Hi mate, sadly we still haven’t measured the top speed but we are putting together a video reviewing the motor and our thoughts on it so far. We will do a speed test when we finish that video! It’s definitely very very fast though. In fact we haven’t had it up to top speed since we ran the motor in during this video, because there is no need for us to go that fast 😂 All in all though, we absolutely love the Mercury 115HP CT fourstroke, it has been brilliant on fuel and has plenty of power and speed even with our 17 feet long fibreglass boat. I’d definitely recommend one and I will hopefully have a top speed for everyone soon. Cheers 👍
With the price of that motor. Did you consider a newer bigger boat?
Hey mate, no we didn’t actually! This boat is pretty much perfect for us, and does everything we need it to. We can sleep overnight in it, fish over the shallow sandflats, go 20km+ offshore, and as well as that it’s a really smooth ride. Whenever we take it for a service or someone looks at the boat, they always say “I’d hang on to this thing.” We have no need for a bigger boat so just got the new motor 😁👍🎣 Tight lines Peter, thanks for watching mate

How fast does the new motor go at full throttle?
Hey mate, I’m actually not sure on the new top speed but it’s bloody fast! It’s probably the fastest I’ve gone in a boat before 😅 The Haines Hunters were originally made as racing boats which probably helps. I’ll try to find out a top speed next time we are somewhere calm
How’s the engine running now after a few months?
G’day mate, it’s been absolutely awesome!! It pushes the boat along really, really well and every trip it keeps proving that it is way better on fuel than the old 2 stroke. We’re using just less then half the fuel we did in the past! We sit it on 4000-4500 revs and don’t really need any more than that although the maximum revs are 6000. 4000-4500 gets us cruising along pretty quick. And it’s a whole lot more quiet too. I would highly recommend that you break that engine in for the first 10 hrs. After 10 hours, look out cook out!

Hi Will I have the same motor 2020 Get your self what is call saltaway to flush it with Just done 200 hr service they couldn’t believe how clean the thermostats were Look like new as he said that is a great sign that the saltwater is not though the block at all You will notice the $$$$ you save on fuel I go from grand jetty to 24s and back on 8 litres Tight lines

What was the OUCH factor, and how much did you get for your old girl? Cheers
Hey mate. The motor itself was around $17,000 and the steering was around $1,600. It also cost us $350 to get the old motor taken off, which is part of that price. We just got the basic gauge on the dash of the boat, but the more high-tech digital gauges would add a bit to the price too. We also ordered it in October last year and the prices may have changed since then. My advice would be if/when you’re looking for a new motor, make sure you shop around and ask for prices from different sellers, as some places you’ll find are slightly better priced than others. We got $2,200 for the old motor. A guy bought it to take his son/family fishing and out on the boat tubing and so on, so we’re glad it went to a good home, it was still in good condition with no issues even though it was old!! So odd he's so excited about going fast, but after promising many times to record speed he can't or want do it. All of a sudden he's not interested in going fast. So many people asking for a number you would think Will would take the time to print it out. The whole world is waiting for the speed of the boat and motor. Please don't let us down Will, no one can eat or sleep until this is done.
How much does boat weigh?
Hi mate, I have absolutely no idea sorry! I tried to google it but couldn’t find anything sadly. FYI though it is a Haines Hunter V17C (17 feet long) with a 90 litre fuel tank. After looking at the weight of some other boats that are a similar size, I’d estimate it at around 500kg or a bit more but I have absolutely no clue mate sorry. Sorry I can’t be more help! Cheers

You've said that a few times through the comments Will. Still no answer...alas who cares as long as it gets you to where you want to go at a decent clip. Most times your out you can't go no where near max speed anyway, hard on the boat, hard on your gear...and hard on the body. Cheers@@willkitching

As you said, when you’re out fishing there aren’t too many times when you can get up to full speed or find time to film extra footage of the boat. I’m currently in the process of planning/filming an update video on the motor, and our thoughts on it after a couple of years of use. It’s been very impressive, and top speed doesn’t matter to us either as long as it’s powerful enough to get you places and to have a decent fuel economy 👌👌 cheers mate
