  • Bit of a strange era; seeing players like Francis, Woodcock, Hateley, Anderson so prominent in the early qualifiers, but then dropped out of favour before or during the World Cup in Mexico, replaced by the likes of Beardsley, Lineker, Waddle etc. I have faint memories of Mexico '86, but seeing the set up of the team before this in the mid 1980s was very interesting. Thanks for posting.

Once over, England v Italy would have been a clash of 2 very distinctive styles. I think football as a whole, has been swallowed up into a whole encompassing "one size fits all" framework. In the 90s for example, when a highly technical side played one touch possession football compared to the long ball percentage stuff that was the norm - it was a novelty and a sight to behold. Now it seems that every team tries to play that "high press Barcelona Guardiola" way which has ironically made the game a tad more boring and predictable as a result.
