Loved seeing bryan robson play ,a talisman for england A gifted player and a spirited captain,scored some mesmerizing goals in 82 world cup, especially the 1st against France....
Very interesting seeing these qualifiers being a Liverpool fan from 1988. Knew of Barnes Wonder goal via Brazil but didnt know why he was only a sub in Mexico 86. Looks like Waddle took his place for a couple of years untill he joined Liverpool

I was at the England v Romania game as a 9 year old It was midweek and getting into the stadium was a nightmare We missed about the first 10-15 mins as did thousands trying to get it through the turnstiles Not sure what happened but fans were pissed off and got quite scary as a young kid
Loved Ray wilkins . Celebrated every goal like it was a cup final winner.
Bit of a strange era; seeing players like Francis, Woodcock, Hateley, Anderson so prominent in the early qualifiers, but then dropped out of favour before or during the World Cup in Mexico, replaced by the likes of Beardsley, Lineker, Waddle etc. I have faint memories of Mexico '86, but seeing the set up of the team before this in the mid 1980s was very interesting. Thanks for posting.
Although Eng didn't have to qualify, the young Peters and Ball got their first caps not long before the '66 WC 🙂
Well, Francis was far from his prime, he was a killer striker 7/8 years before, Woodcock was good, but a bit too old to play in Mexico, and the difference between Hateley and Lineker is like night and day.
@@frankwells7520Because here in Italy we actually saw the real face of Hateley: a totally disgrace... Lineker was a great striker but he suffered from a lot of injuries both in Everton and Barcelona, this is the truth!
That was the resetting sin of Eng managers...inconsistency of selection. Probably listened to people like Brian Granville...RIP...who always knew far better than any England manager.
Football today has become more of a lucrative business than a fun and exciting sport !!!
The money in it now has made the sport harder to watch whether you pay season ticket or watch it on the telly.Yet we still to this day 4 weeks before the 2022 world cup starts England have yet to win any tournament since i was born and i will probably end up in the ground with a headstone before England win anything and probably long after that.

A very good team that would have swept the WC group in Mexico if Bobby had stuck with the logic of the pre-tourney matches...Reid with Hoddle in the middle,Hodge on the left, Lineker and Beardsley up front..flat back four with Alvin Martin in the centre or Everton's Dave Watson...Waddle on the right at very best (this was the biggest question mark) ...come the start, Wilkins and Robson were starting and Hatelely up front..the defensive full backs pushed too far up leaving Butcher et al exposed..
England finished the group with 12 points and a +19 goal difference.

@@greglyons2526 His second was when the England team was deflated after the handball minutes before. They fought well as underdogs. And there isn't one greatest goal of all time. And before and after you have the shadow of fixing in the 78 World Cup and the cynical playing for penalties in the 90 one.
@@greglyons2526 I remember well that quarter final between England and Argentina, it wasn't really until Sir Bobby brought on John Barnes that we caused them problem's after we we're already two down. In the end Maradona's men were grateful for the final whistle in a match they'd largely controlled.

This was one of e best Generation of e English team!!! Gary Lineker was that WC top scorer....we also have one of e best goal keeper in Peter Shilton and many great defenders like Kenny Samson, Tony Adams, Woodlice, Gary Stevens...plus great midfielders like Glenn Hoddle, Chris waddle, Ray Willins, Bryan Robson Etc etc..just a shame n pity they lost to Argentina in e Quarter Final by Maradona " hand of gods" n his 2nd goal, one of e best goal scored in e WC history!!!

Hatley came on vs USSR did well enough with nothing to lose to go on tour to South America should have got a few there - he got one vs Brazil and then went on to star in this campaign - as I remember it folks .

Actually, i felt England came alive once he was out of the team in Mexico '86.
Unfortunately Robson wasn't the last time England would take unfit players to tournaments, also add likes of Beckham, Owen, Rooney etc.
He was and got injured. Did them a favour as Bobby Robson brought in Reid Hodge and Beardsley,the latter in favour of a target man. It changed the way they played and were terrific against the Poles and Paraguay. They never really went back to a target man afterwards so those changes were quite far reaching
@@cerneuffington2656 true. Peter Reid was a bette player at that time and if I remember correctly went to Mexico as player of the year in div 1. Robson was a good goalscorer but Reid offered more bite and control in mf inho,hence the improvement against Poland.

I remember this team, but jesus how slow was football abd compared to today football it seems quite a low quality tbh.

Disagree, the ball was much heavier back then, pitches were worse and less S & S training by players. Put those players back then into the conditions of today, they'd kill the players of today.

During the covid shutdown 2020 I watched a lot of the games from the 1980's. A lot of those games haven't aged well. Awful finishing in particular. We were lucky to have had enough world class players to disguise the general poor standard amongst most players and teams.
Football was more unique and less generic back then. Probably the better and more interesting for it. Dietary habits have changed Tactics have changed Skill levels have changed because the air of mystery between opponents is non existent. Every team plays the same now and most top players are multi millionaire mercenaries.

@@JSL2000 I couldn't help but notice the other night during the England v Italy qualifier how similar in style most teams are now. Once over, England v Italy would have been a clash of 2 very distinctive styles. I think football as a whole, has been swallowed up into a whole encompassing "one size fits all" framework. In the 90s for example, when a highly technical side played one touch possession football compared to the long ball percentage stuff that was the norm - it was a novelty and a sight to behold. Now it seems that every team tries to play that "high press Barcelona Guardiola" way which has ironically made the game a tad more boring and predictable as a result. Sorry for the long winded reply.😊

England stink. Look at that qualifying group…should have been a walk in the park for a footballing nation of England’s size. But take away the matches against Turkey, who were pathetic, and we can see that England made hard work of this campaign. They were lucky to have made it to the quarters in the tournament, where of course they lost to the first good team they encountered. As per usual.
