This is going to be THE next thing. I know it. I read the first Dune about 3 years ago and I was so disappointed that nobody I knew had even heard of it. It is by far, the best book I have ever read. The imagery, philosophical ideas, character arcs.. I mean this book is the freaking Bible. Im sorry if my vocabulary isn't doing this justice.It's a shame that it's not as well known as it should. As I understand it, the production company has not even committed to doing the second projected film, which would cover the second "half" of the first book. There's no way they would commit to the full series without seeing how the initial film does commercially.

I have never seen either Chalamet or Zendaya in a role, only clips of some of their past roles. I cannot claim to be a fan of either. But I have investigated their filmographies. Chalamet appears to headed for a distinguished career. He trained at an arts magnet high school, and his 30 professional credits on IMDb go back to 2008. For such a young actor, he has an impressive list of major nominations (no wins): an Academy Award nomination; 3 BAFTA nominations (the UK's most prestigious acting awards); 2 Golden Globe nominations; 3 nominations for Screen Actors Guild Award, and 3 nominations for Critics' Choice Movie Award. That list does not include a long list of nominations and wins for more minor awards. I have not seen any of his performances in full; I did like him (in clips) as Laurie in "Little Women." Zendaya has 46 credits on IMDb, going back to 2011. Some or many of those may be for music vidoes or such -- she is a recording artist as well as an actress -- but she has appeared in several high-profile films, as well as on TV, in acting roles both comedic and serious. She won a Primetime Emmy last autumn for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, the youngest to ever receive that award. She has 2 additional major acting nominations, one for a Critics' Choice Movie Award, another for a Critics' Choice Television Award, and numerous nominations and wins for more minor awards. Are you criticizing Chalamet's and Zendaya's youth? During filming, Chalamet was 8-9 years older than Paul is in the novel! When the book Dune opens -- and up until the time skip, when he is 18 and Alia, now born, is about 3 -- *Paul Atreides is 15 and small for his age.* The time skip definitely won't be included in this movie; the film will likely end either with the fight against Jamis/Paul's full acceptance into Stilgar's troupe, or with the Water of Life ceremony/Paul and Chani becoming a couple. The novel is many things, and one of the central aspects of the novel is it is a coming of age story. Chalumet and Zendaya are actually too old to play the the mid-teens of the novel; it's difficult to find mid-adolescents who are fully formed actors. At least both of these performers are youthful looking for their ages. One of the problems with the TV series -- which I like -- was that Alec Newman and Barbora Kodetova were not credible as adolescents; Newman turned 26, Kodetova 30, not long before the U.S. TV release in December 2000. Both were more effective performers in the 2003 Children of Dune sequel series, when they were playing much closer to their actual ages. Kyle MacLachlan and Sean Young were both 25 when the Lynch film opened in December 1984. Primary filming for the current film finished in July 2019. When (primary) filming for Villaneuve's film was completed in July 2019, Chalamet was 24, Zendaya 23, not that much different than Lynch's cast members. If you go much older, the actors won't be credible even as late adolescents. With the delay in release with this film, by the time a second film is made, even the youthful looking Chalamet and Zendaya may not pass well for the 18-19 yr-olds of the final section of the book.

And how through this we create our own enemies." The book basically could have warned the US of Vietcong resiliance and how corruption at the top makes millions suffer. No, rather did the US play empire and invade Iraq and made a mess of the Middle East, basically raising resistance (eh terrorism) with 4500%. So yes, corrupt politicians may have used it as a handbook and good people could have been warned. Nuanced enough?

Chalumet and Zendaya are actually too old to play the the mid-teens of the novel; it's difficult to find mid-adolescents who are fully formed actors. At least both of these performers are youthful looking for their ages. One of the problems with the TV series -- which I like -- was that Alec Newman and Barbora Kodetova were not credible as adolescents; Newman turned 26, Kodetova 30, not long before the U.S. TV release in December 2000. Both were more effective performers in the 2003 Children of Dune sequel series, when they were playing much closer to their actual ages. Kyle MacLachlan and Sean Young were both 25 when the Lynch film opened in December 1984. Primary filming for the current film finished in July 2019. When (primary) filming for Villaneuve's film was completed in July 2019, Chalamet was 24, Zendaya 23, not that much different than Lynch's cast members. If you go much older, the actors won't be credible even as late adolescents. With the delay in release with this film, by the time a second film is made, even the youthful looking Chalamet and Zendaya may not pass well for the 18-19 yr-olds of the final section of the book.

Why does Hollywood keep making 'desert people defending themselves against an empire' movies? Hidden guilt? Exposing the hunt for oil? Or pretending they are the endangered minority? And I'll watch it anyway. Looks very well made.

@@KMn048 I read it. It was deep, but is part of the main US SF and Fantasy meme: "we are being threatened by big dark forces, yet fail to see how we're one ourselves. And how through this we create our own enemies." The book basically could have warned the US of Vietcong resiliance and how corruption at the top makes millions suffer. No, rather did the US play empire and invade Iraq and made a mess of the Middle East, basically raising resistance (eh terrorism) with 4500%. So yes, corrupt politicians may have used it as a handbook and good people could have been warned. Nuanced enough?
