This is a short clip of The Kid in which I used DeOldify to colorize the film. Some slight camera shake has also been removed and audio replaced.
[Update: This was posted before COVID and much of the new AI things coming out. I appreciate all the views and hope that an interest in older films]

  • Los Angeles neighborhood use in the kid and other locations need to be preserve and maintain as landmarks. These neighborhood use in the kid the old buildings are still there such a beautiful location I been there. The streets of los Angeles has not change since 20s still crack and bumpy. Proud to be a Californian I love Hollywood movies but the old classics ones.

    • You bet! Color helps our minds bridge the time gap as seeing people back then as "other than" us present day, and that is great- even if the technology has issues.

  • How do you use the colorizing software once you download and extract the folder from the link you posted? I can't find a program that will come up in order to colorize and stabilize the images?

  • beyond pretty cool ! How much time might it take to process an 80 minute video? Is there a lumped already "educated" good-to-go version of the program? - or is it broken up into many modules? We have some 6 core/12 thread cpu - what GPU minimum spec would it need to do a movie?

  • Can you tell me what render_factor did you use please? I'm trying to get good enough results without having a washed out effect.

    • I cannot as this was done so long ago I do not have the setting anymore. You should test out shorter clips to find while setting is best.

  • There's a GUI version called "Deoldify Bot", you need UiPath to use it, better do that with videos that are shorter than 2 minutes because of the very high single core processing time.

    • After checking out the project it is an option, but seems similar to using a computer script. Generally this is not a preferred option for any professional workspace. Using the collab locally on a PC is likely the best process for long videos or lots of photos.

    • Fake moustache, the only real one he used for film was in "Monsieur Verdoux" ... & to answer your last question, he was 32 in 1921 when "The Kid" was released.

  • I am trying to colorize a scene from the Elephant Man, but I am getting this error: NameError Traceback (most recent call last) in () 3 4 if source_url is not None and source_url !='': ----> 5 video_path = colorizer.colorize_from_url(source_url, 'video.mp4', render_factor) 6 show_video_in_notebook(video_path) 7 else: NameError: name 'colorizer' is not defined Can you please HELP ME?!

    • Not sure, sounds like you didn't specify the file during the process. I didn't code it, I just use it. Good luck. 🍀

    • Run all commands above actual colorize command with url and render_factor in the guide, specially "colorizer = get_video_colorizer {}". This error will happen when only source address is added and colorize command started.

  • Sorry, but colorizing such early masterpieces may be one more curiosity for the 2020s' mainstream audience, it definitely remains an absolute artistic heresy, though. Nope.
