I understand that the point of short films are to invoke a strong emotional feeling in the viewer, in order to make the short memorable, but every now and then, when this short pops up in my head, it just ruins my whole day and I wish I could unsee it. The world is sad enough without having to think about this.
I'm actually crying. The rats was so damn cute. And the fact that they rubbed their heads together through the glass literally cripples me.

I’m in tears over this right now! I was really hoping all the rats would escape, and the dark one and white one could run off and have a family together! They were so adorable rubbing their heads against each other! I bawled my eyes out at the end! I love rats, very intelligent beings as well! This kind of cruelty needs to stop!

@@happycoryfan3748 how are they cruel? I’ve owned rats for years, neither of them were cruel, very smart, I taught them tricks and everything. I also have owned a few giant Gambian rats, while they were kind, they were overprotective of their owners, especially the males. I don’t consider any animal “cruel” they just don’t trust and fallow their instincts. You clearly don’t know anything about animals, let alone rats.

Jamie's Locks Nah I think it's cuz the bad endings are what gives it that little unexpected twist that can shock the viewer and take them on a rollercoaster of emotions. I like happy endings but for some stories, a bad/sad ending makes it more interesting (Sometimes I hate the bad endings for some stories cuz I wanted it to end happily but ya gotta admit, sometimes it really does catch you off guard XD)

@KK People who don't like rats don't understand the meaning of life: they are very social beings, peaceful, intelligent and live together in harmony. Also rats take care of each other. Humans should learn from rats, so they would be much more friendlier and nicer to each other. But, sigh, humans are superficial so they can't esteem rats. I love them and always will. 💖

I first saw this on PBS, I guess four years ago, and I've been trying to find it. Yay. Now I remember the ending. Why was I looking for this?
Why is everyone so angry at this animation? It's beautiful. What's wrong with it being sad? Not all stories can have a peachy perfect ending. That's life. It's meant to leave us feel shocked and sad. That's what the emotions are for. It leaves us wondering if the characters will ever give up or if it's too late. A happy ending is usually predictable and over. Who ever made this, great job! You left me feeling sad and shocked and questioning what will happen next, and that's not bad!

I know right! I have had rats as pets in the past and still do, but that doesn't mean I'll automatically get offended about this, honestly, I loved the animation. Not only does it tug at your heartstrings, but it also shows how rats aren't evil monsters, it is just a beautiful story of reality, uphills and downhills.
Somebody once told me or it leaves you thinking...HUMANS ARE EVIL SEARCH ANIMAL TESTS IT'S SO FREAKING SAD or the rat could get in, and if you say the chance of it getting in is low, how about the Cheeto bag huh?

Their treatment is nowhere as bad as this makes it to be. While it is sad that we run tests on rats, it is often the only way to advance medicine and treatments to save lives. In some experiments (like a recent one for a surprisingly effective cancer treatment) the surviving rats even become like office pets. They often have better lives than rats on the streets.
I wasn't really talking about makeup, since it makes up a pretty small proportion of animal testing (Product testing makes up about 0.3% according to www.humaneresearch.org.au/statistics in Australia), but I agree that people should try to buy stuff that isn't animal tested, since it's cruelty that can be avoided.

А смогла бы мышка выращенная в неволе выжить в диких джунглях канализации? И обретя свободу можно потерять многое. Мультфильм очень символичен. Спасибо.

Why is there so much rage about the ending being sad? Most of the time, a bad ending is what adds that unexpected twist and not all stories have a happy ending. It's basically like an animation based on reality since life does have its ups and downs and will always have bad things happening, not always having a happy ending. I enjoyed this animation and it took me on a wild rollercoaster of emotions and that's what I think makes it an amazing work of art. I'd wanna tell the creator, great job on this and keep up the great work!

kesheeka Bhookhun if we won't test animals you would probably be dead. Lion hunts deer to survive so do human. Yeah it looks sad from rats point of view but you want to save animals which will indirectly kill humans.

Heartbreaking on so many levels... I love rats (have five adopted pet rats), they are incredibly social and bond deeply with one another. This just makes my heart ache...
This animated short is quite amazing, job well done. Although the ending is unanticipated, and quite despondent it is beautifully done and a roller coaster of emotions. I watched a week ago and it has stayed within my heart so well done I'm sure that you would want to be remembered for your work

I've watched a couple of these this morning, and they all involve the couple being apart, or one of them being dead. Do these animators need therapy, or something? I'm not saying I don't enjoy a good tragic ending, though.

YES!!!!!!! I love an unhappy ending every once in awhile. It makes me feel actual emotions, which is pretty strange. Also, the emotions are usually partial sadness, but also partial glee at there being a tragic end. This was a small snack to what I call a great meal in the emotional world.

OMG that was the saddest ending. I mean I wrecked my day :( I like to rewrite it and the second part is that she finds another way out and he was outside weighting for her and they ran off into the city together and the lived a long a happy life together and they had lots of kids and they lived to be very old. Now that is a way better ending.
