This video shows you step by step how to instructions to install the Red Eye rear bumper from Metal Tech 4x4 onto a FJ Cruiser.
The Red Eye Bumper from Metal Tech 4x4 is one of the few Toyota FJ Cruiser rear bumpers designed with a swing out to carry your spare tire, gas cans and hi-lift jack on an overland or off road adventure. The kit comes with everything needed and requires no welding or drilling into the truck's frame.

I like the idea of heavy-duty bumpers. For me it would be in case someone looking at their phone while driving bumps into my FJ.

The idea is so the oversized spare wheel does not rip the mounts from the door, and also wear out the door hinges, the extra weight will accelerate the wear, I had a 35" spare on my Landrover Defender rear door, it went through the hinges in a matter of months, the Landy was ten years old to start with so wear was already happening. So I went for an all singing all dancing combi bumper spare wheel Hi Lift jack two jerry cans a water carrier with shower attachment and short wave aerial mount, all this after I Bobtailed it so not much overhang. I am not a fan of removing the OEM bumpers as of right now, but this rear bumper is super nice and I love the additional gas can holder as well. I'm sure if I installed one on my own it would take me a year to get it on lol.
haha... I'm with you that it is important to think about why you are changing out a bumper. Better departure angle, ability to carry fuel, location for a hi-lift jack, or ability to rack a large tire are all good but make sure you plan to use them... BTW: we have a Metal Tech front bumper because we wanted the protection up-front, better approach angle and ability to mount a winch but we have still run with an OEM rear bumper... although we have had to replace a number those "self-ejecting" rear bumper wings :-)

The rear bumper is a nice bit of kit, but I did not like the lack of spacer tubes on the long mounting bolts, also no locking nuts either nyloc or split pin or R-clips, as he did not use threadloc on any of the standard nut's and bolts. As the only criticism all together a nice bumper.
Whats about the rearme coil springs with the extra weight?...

+Fred 79 yes, Metal Tech 4x4 has an option for FJ Cruisers with backup cameras. Give them a call. They are great guys and happy to help you get all the info you need to make sure their bumper is right for you.

Great bumper, planning on getting one. I do have a question. What do you do if you have backup sensors? Are they no longer used? Disconnected? Or is there a way to continue to use them?
The bumper does incorporate the backup sensors. This FJC just didn't have them so couldn't show. Give Metal Tech a call (or email) and they can let you know the steps.

Get some wide fenders to cover the wheels and you got an amazing looking rig.
Wheel spacers are bad get offset rims instead.... I do like the modified fender flares

POPPASHANGO it does not even though their website says it will. You will need to remove the OEM hitch and buy a center-mount hitch as the bumper bolts into the frame where the hitch bolts on.

Not yet.... but the Red Eye 2 was patterned after the Pegasus, Lexus GX470 rear bumper and the install is very similar (kzhead.info/sun/dNWohdqprJemd6M/bejne.html)

great question... I'm going to suggest you ask Metal Tech 4x4 that question. It has been a while and they may have change the attachment method. I don't want to give you bad info.

Good question... I've not heard of any plans to add that option but Give Metal Tech 4x4 a call and they can tell you if it is even possible based on the swing arm specs.

Metal Tech has a mount for the backup camera.
What brand are the two green gas cans?
emilio trench those are NATO style cans. They are not available new in the USA. The owner had gone up to Canada and found a couple at a surplus store and brought them back with him.
You can't put gas in a green can (at least not in the USA)
what size is the fuel can?
Nia Saephanh it's been awhile but pretty sure those were 20 liter NATO cans.

The plate relocated to the fuel can carrier.

+Marcos Velasquez this looks like a good one to answer. If you are running 35" tires they will not fit on the OEM tire mount but it will fit on on many swing outs. and you're right... some just like the looks, along with a place to care fuel cans.

Sorry don't know that one... not my truck. Loaned for the install video. Go over to the fjcruiserforums.com and search wheel tire combo and you get threads with pictures and descriptions for tons of combos. Great resource.

Additional gas tanks , it's already got a 160 Lt standard tank already in the truck , why would you want to carry more fuel , water I can understand , but fuel
a lifted, heavily load truck can drag MPG way down and then if you are staying in 4WD the hole time on the trail it goes down further. No one wants to wants to run dry in the middle of no where and 100 miles to the closest town.
@@lastgreatroadtrip My FJ gets me 1700 Klms , I spend a lot of time in the bush never needed any more fuel ever , I could nearly drive from Melbourne to Perth without refueling

The door no longer carries the weight. The bumper carries the weights of the larger tire, gas cans and other accessories. The truck's frame carries the bumper... how it should be :-)
What’s the point of this bumper?
No PPE gear: safety glasses, gloves, guard for grinder, using grinder with one hand instead of two. Do your projects well and professionally especially if you are mentoring others. Train them well to do their projects not to become statistics.

geez maggeez lots of bolts to take care of. I'm sure its not that hard to install but looks like a pain in the dick with 17,000 bolts to look after. I'll pass for a more plug and play bumper not a jigsaw of ten parts bumper.

Thanks for the reply! I love LGRT videos on the fj. It has helped me a lot. I changed my front and rear diff and transfer case oil with your help. Next is to drop the oil pan and change that filter out. Any videos on that??

I don't understand why the FJ is so popular for off-roading, the visibility from the drivers perspective is terrible. You'd be better off with an older 4 runner or Jeep surely?
***** Why to people wheel FJC... because they can :-) but really they are reliable and capable right out of the box (e-Locer, A-trac, crawl). The visibility isn't as bad as some would say, you need to know where your corners are and line your mirrors up correct... but they are not perfect either... a bit wide if you wheel tight trails and not as much room as a 4Runner. But much cheaper then equally equipted 4Runners of same year. And of course people either just love the hell out of em... or hate em.
