In the 1960s, the BBC set out to investigate local reports of secret, shocking World War Two experiments, dangerous contamination and unexplained animal deaths on a remote island off the coast of Scotland.
It was an environmental catastrophe.
The island remained dangerously contaminated and a no-go area for nearly half a century, until, on this day in 1990, the UK government finally declared Gruinard Island safe.
The truth was that Gruinard Island had been the site of a clandestine attempt by the UK during World War Two to weaponise Anthrax, a deadly bacterial infection.

BBC, I love you, but why not add at the end of the video that the anthrax has been cleaned up 40 years ago, the island sold back to it’s original owner for £500 and it’s now just an island like all the others in the area.
Because that would be positive news. When it comes to reporting on anything about Britain, the BBC is just relentlessly negative. It actively despises this nation and its native population, and we're forced to pay for the privilege.

Spent my 1980’s summers in Grunyard Bay (opposite the Anthrax island as it was known) , the beach was always empty lol😂but beautiful 🙏 anthrax was thought to have worn off by then … always wondered what the story was but my mums take was ….that they should test such things under parliament buildings in London instead of up here. So great to see this

I finished chemo last year, and am a neurodivergent , disabled veteran with costs, COPD, screwed knees and chronic sciatica. And as such apparently I am in a "protected group" in Scottish law 😁

I feel you but I cannot feel not my hands, so a typo is all. spent my summers there, we live not far away. It is truly terrifying what intelligent people can and will do when they themselves are terrified. "There is nothing to fear but fear itself" takes on a dramatically different meaning in hindsight.
Why does this remind me of a movie I saw made around the 60s? I wish I could remember the name of it. It featured a remote island, people in a guesthouse, animals dying, no way off till the ferry came back.
It's not the one frpom the Agatha Christie book in whioch the invited human guests get bumped off one by one,then.

We did the NC500 a couple of years ago and spent one night parked up in a layby on the opposite side of the bay to Anthrax island after we had climbed An Teallach. A very vivid memory of mine was having a wild dump in the bushes while looking at the island while it was bathed in the light of the setting sun. Best wild dump I've ever had.

@@julianaylor4351 Yep. These are common knowledge. But is the village in Devon ? I remember it as being near Devises as just off the edge of Salisbury Plain. Could be wrong on that because my last visit was during a joint exercise in the early 1970s.

Not ideal. No fresh water so all water and food would need to be shipped in. The islands location would make that expensive. Building a sewage treatment unit would not be cheap either.

The test was performed in 1942, rules are a little different when you are in the middle of a war.
No real secret. This remote island was used as test area in 1942. The locals knew not to visit. I first saw the island in 1965. The mainland already had signs do not visit the island because of anthrax contamination.
