Solving Lexus or Toyota Electrical Problems With a Multimeter
In this video I will go over the diagnostics procedure about how to tell if you have a bad engine control module, a shorted wire to ground, corrosion and buildup causing resistance in wiring harness or connectors and how you can use a multimeter to diagnose these problems.

I've bought a 2002 Toyota MR2 spyder, which I've converted the transmission from auto to manual. The tricky part is now finding the wires that'll start the car. But watching your videos helps me understand the basics behind troubleshooting (even if I don't know where to begin)

With vehicles today, just changing out a part does NOT mean the issue goes away. So at some point, either you or a 'high-paid technician' with loads of time on his hand, & dollar signs in his eyes will find the real problem with an electrical meter. As for repair on the ECM, I never knew those things could or would be fixable inside. Beyond my pay grade, but great you found some shop that can do that kind of work. You also show what kind of issues a 'salt belt vehicle' can expect to have even though the car looks 'really clean' and a steal! Old & simple is my idea of a reliable vehicle. But all things come to an end one way or the other. You sell it/ or it goes to a scrap yard.

Good idea to state for the learners that “ series circuits have voltage drop at each load.” The load COULD BE a loose connection, an unintended load. thank you
Excellent video. Good resource for saving money. I thought the only way to solve this problem was to buy a new engine control module. Very expensive and wasteful if a repair is possible.

What multi meter leads you using? They look good quality
It wouldn't be too hard to remove the capacitors with solder wick. You could then clean up the board and inspect the traces. You can check them for continuity to be sure. One of my theories is that if something is broken I can't make it worse by trying to fix it. This theory does not always work🙄. At least I always learn something. Wisdom comes from experiences, both good and bad.
these ecu's aren't easy to come by so I would send it out to a shop. would be a decent idea if there were new ones at the local dealer. there's also the whole chip shortage thing going on so there isn't going to be stock for brand new vehicles either...
Hey!!! I have a 1994 Lexus ES300 that has a miss on cylinder 3. Weird thing is that I've tested the plug, coil, replaced the coil clip, got another igniter, and the last thing Im thinking is ECU! @Ratchets And Wrenches Great shows and skill you have... Question ... the Mechanic forgot the transmission filter and ripped the pan open again after was RTV and sealed ..then no bother cleaning old RTC and gasket ....just added some more RTV to fill in and closed it again after putting filter in. Will too much RTV like instead of 1/8 inch bead its more like 1/2 inch or 3/4 bead of RTV ... maybe even a bit more. then criss cross torque and we let it sit 5 hrs ..fill and drive,.. will it hurt the transmission too much RTV like that or the pan in any way?

1980s Chrysler, Dodge & Plymouth products with a TPS went through sensors like water.
I knew it was the ecu. The speedometer intermittently going wacky like that and maybe transmission also shifting funny usually means ecu

Need help i have a knock sensor light on 2001 chevy tahoe 5.3 change the knock sensor nd the cable light was off but came back on same codes but i put brand new sensors nd a plug p0332 p0327
I test all 4 of my o2 sensors, the 2 upstream sensors were different ohms, 4.2 ohms and 8.4 ohms, is this a problem?

Or your losing voltage along the way. Resistance somewhere causing loss. Bad connection bad wire/or wire connector etc. Ground should be solid too.

No car is bulletproof. But Toyotas are more reliable because of their quality control and statistics being on their side. Lower failure rates are obvious when you can control entire supply chain and execute proper quality checks, which means producing as age tolerant parts as one can achieve. Ofc you know that, but I wanted to clarify nevertheless.
Toyota learns from their mistakes. That's why they beat us at our own game

Toyota's are very reliable if recommended maintenance is done on them. Lexus as well. When I worked for both companies dealerships there main problems were people not doing oil changes at recommended times. That's where we would see problems with the engine gelling. The 90-94! LS400 was for its time incredibly reliable and such a smooth driving vehicle. Lexus went down a few notches as they started to up production to meet demand.

You are really brave to condemn that ecu so fast. You'd have to be reeeally fu ckin sure that 12v and nothing less than 12v must always be on that gn line. Coz at 10.6v, I wouldn't be so sure that the ecu is bad. Also, if you had doubts about a short to ground, then you could just put a friggin test light on that wire connected to battery positive. And no, there's no such thing as a partial short to ground. Electricity doesn't work that way. You could have a voltage drop for sure, but never a partial short to ground. And another thing is that before you start unhooking wires and connecting long leads, you could simply backprobe that ecu pin and you'd have seen immediately that you don't have a wiring problem. I'm not even sure that you have an ecu problem. It's possible, but I'd need more proof.
