A U.S. veteran could not believe his eyes when he opened his front door to discover his battle buddy from Iraq, who had traveled across the country to surprise him on his birthday. Other than a brief one-hour crossover in 2010, Shawn Dodd and best friend Jesse Burr had not spent time with each other since they served in 2003. Back then, Shawn, 43, was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division, 1-12 Infantry, when he met fellow staff sergeant Jesse, 49. Shawn and Jesse both lost their commander and close friend in action, and for the years that followed their service, they kept in touch to help one another with the loss. In 2019, Jesse sent Shawn a handmade wooden U.S. flag to celebrate his time in the military, which Shawn says is so special to him that it would be the first thing he would save in a house fire. It had always been Jesse's aim to travel from his Tehachapi, California home to surprise Shawn in Vancouver, Washington, and with the help of Shawn's son, Caleb, that visit became possible.

What are you waiting for? I see my desert storm buddies every single year. We meet in Myrtle beach every April for a week of golf. From Pittsburgh all the way to Apache Junction, everyone makes it every year. 12 men, 9 different states.
Love this. Is it me or do they look like brothers? Thank you for your service.

Man they resemble each other !!! Thank you so much for your service men !!! 🇺🇸
Maybe they should do a genetic test to check if they are related.... stranger things have happened.

They look like brothers, as others have also commented. Thank you both for your service.
I was deployed twice during the gulf war. This is how deep that connection can be. You spend 24 hrs a day with these people. They become very special to you. This was beautiful to watch. Thank you for your service.

@armybeef68 we grilled and talked shit while getting drunk. Then the next day we all drove to where our buddy was buried. We had a house on the lake for the whole thing. Met with his family at the cemetery. Wrnt back to the house and continued to get fucked up. Next time we're gonna go to an amusement park or somethin.

2 brothers reunited, man this Brought tears to my eyes.
The bond we make with those we served with isn’t something that goes away. We live, eat, sleep, hurt, celebrate, argue, fight. We are all that we have over there. It’s a bond that cannot be explained.
Thank you both for your service. ❤
???
Wow! Brought tears to my eyes. What a great relationship. They really could be related. That's crazy! What a great son he has to!
these men do not score touchdowns nor do they hit home runs, but they are by far the truest meaning of HERO than does that do score touchdowns and hit home runs. my highest respect to you both and all those that serve.
No reason to bring sports into any of this.
Good to see best friends connect. I lost my best friend several years ago due to illness. Cherish every moment.
You never forget a brother in arms.
They ABSOLUTELY look like brothers! How cool.
Moments like this, are not forgotten, EVER! I have had two moments like this. I stopped and surprised a female who I worked with and deployed with while I was in Germany. It had been 22 years since we had seen each other. A few months after that, I learned that one of the mechanics from that unit in Germany, was having surgery in Omaha. I was working out there, so I stopped and visited him and his wife one evening. They were both moments that meant a lot to me and I hope to them.
Thank you all around. Two first class men. This gives me hope. Bless you both.
What a beautiful story. That was so nice that they got to be reunited again. Thank you, gentlemen, for your service.
Thank you for your service. Also happy surprise and love of battle brothers. Your both awesome examples of Great Americans
That kind of love is all too rare today but it was a blessing to see this awesome reunion. God bless them both!?
Way to go Caleb! I think most people forget that military families serve too. And your son was right there on the battlefield with you every day. The point is, he understands his dad better than most. Thank you all for your service!
So glad you were finally able to reunite. Not only are you best friends but you could be brothers. The resemblance is uncanny! God bless you both and thank you for your service.
Thank you both for your service!
I'm happy and thankful for all you military men and women 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯🇺🇸🇺🇲
What a great story. Thank you both for your service!!
Are you a billionaire?
This is what it's all about !💯🇺🇸
Nothing brings you closer than facing life or death situations and coming out alive on the other end. Happy for both of these men
I'm one of those kinds of people that wanted to forget as much as I could about my time in the war and regrettably lost contact with the guys I was closest to after I got out. It was hard to make the effort to reconnect especially after I had a difficult time trying to re adjust to being a civilian. Years later, one of those guys who happened to still be serving, reached out to me on social media and we spoke for a bit and told me this: "we spilled blood in the same mud so we're brothers, no one can take that away"... later that year he was KIA in, farah province, Afghnistan. If that wasn't enough to break me, than a couple years after that, another buddy reached out and told me another close friend of ours took his own life on the 4th of July. So if there's any lesson to this it's: don't always be the one expecting folks to call you. Try and be the one to reach out to others.
Thank you both for your service. Wish we had men like these two running our military now.
Man! That is so beautiful, wholesome and touching!! The love is heartfelt. Thank you both for your service and sacrifices. My family thanks you.

LUV THIS!!! you 2 look like brothers!!! ❤ Glad you got to hook up & spend some time together. You may want to consider being neighbors. 10yrs is a long time to be w/o your soul buddy 😁✌️
Just realizing how lucky my fiance is for having not only his battle buddy but a several of his close buddies from his time in service be a part of our daily lives. I'm lucky too. Thank you Ryan, for being there for us!
They LOOK like brothers..... shocking how alike they are!
Very inspiring lots of love from India
That triple hug in the beginning was enough to make me cry
They look the same, hug the same, did the same head-shoulder grab and similar checkover after greeting....this is a twins separated at birth scenario, can't convince me otherwise😂
They look like long lost brothers even twins ❤❤
Hits you straight in the feels.
