    • These keys are a step backwards. As an example banks have been working for decades to streamline and simplify transactions to where eventually we no longer need even a physical card (e.g. credit or debit), but for the last year now if you’re a landlord with tenants in say an apartment building or a mobile home or RV park the banks charge you a hefty fee for each rent payment transaction for each tenant if you allow the tenants to use either a credit or debit card. So what has this resulted in? As a tenant you must now pay your rent bill with a written cheque - do you get my point?

  • Once setup, you only need the security key if you are planning on setting up a new Apple device or going online to use iCloud. You do not need to carry this key with you or even use it for months or years. Your phone or iPad will not ask you to reauthenticate itself with this key. Also, you are NOT setting up a security key on that device. You are setting up a security key on your Apple account using that device. Once you setup a security key, all your other Apple devices know about it. The only reason to ever carry a security key is if you are also using the same key on a specific website that you have configured to use it. Some people will configure their Mac or PC to login using the same security key in which you may have to actually carry it with you. But this is a completely different issue that setting up an Apple account.

    @aoe2geek@aoe2geek Жыл бұрын
  • NFC tags come in a lot of different styles. Everything from stickers to magnets buttons is really pretty in this what they can do with the NFC technology with that in mind you could take an NFC tag and put it on your desk and that way when you’re sitting at your desk working all day all you have to do is move your phone to the appropriate spot on your desk and it would take an unlock. This could be very helpful, if the security key manufactures adopted some of these other form factors, and I think a great one would be a watch band something you wear already

  • Since you need 2+ keys (aka a backup) I can see it making sense to go with a cheap one as the one that sits at home in your fire-safe or safety deposit box. When you lose/break the more expensive version you use the cheap backup so you can add the replacement. I think the design of the NFC keys needs to be rethought though to make them more suited to being something you'll have on you 24/7. I can't picture any of those plugs surviving too long on a populated key-ring in your pocket. Something is going to break/bend. Perhaps an actual NFC ring you wear. One hand wedding band, one had NFC band.

    @fredoswego@fredoswego Жыл бұрын
    • Hi Fredoswego, Thanks for your comment! It's true that having a backup key is essential, and having a cheaper one makes a lot of sense. We totally agree that the design of NFC keys needs to be rethought - it would be great to have something that you can keep on you at all times without worrying about any damage. An NFC ring is an interesting idea - we'll keep it in mind for future videos! Best, David P.S. You can support us by becoming a channel member: kzhead.infojoin

    • @@PayetteForward does this mean that if someone steals your phone they cannot change your passwords to you Apple ID and hijack your entire ID when using these security keys? Also it’s so confusing. Security keys and then there is Apple passkeys. Why are there 2 different new things going around and which one is going to be the main or better long term choice? Obviously having a security key is nice since its not storing anything online. It’s completely local to your “key”. Lastly how many devices or things will 1 security key work with and if it’s only one device these will not be great at all since if you have several hundred websites to log into you would spend a fortune to have security for all your log ins. Thanks for your video and we hope you have to to reply to our message here.

With SMS people have had their bank accounts stolen by people convincing TMobile reps to activate a hackers SIM card. The OTP apps are better but you could still accidentally enter them into a fake login page.

  • I'm gonna pass on security keys. I don' t need anymore keys dangling from my keyring and I definitely don't need another thing to potentially lose. If I forget my password I can change it and access my stuff. If I understand what you just explained, losing a security key means I'd be, in physics terms, attached to another object by an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis.

  • I appriciate the video demonstrating and showing how to setup, but I'm still not understanding how you use them once they are setup. Purchases through app store don't trigger 2FA do they? The only thing I can think of that triggers 2FA for my apple id, is when I sign into my id on a new device, and I think the last time I needed to do that, it just asked me to hold my existing phone in close proximity to it (I assume because it was using Bluetooth). I suppose logging into apple id on computer would trigger 2FA.. Right? So once the keys are setup in iOS, that still wouldn't protect any of your other accounts besides your Apple ID, right? I'm very interested in using these, I'm just not understanding the whole work flow Another thing for people to keep in mind is that the iPads don't have Nfc scanners, so they will need to pick keys with the right type of connection for their device

  • Question: Apple says you can be locked out of your account if you loose both configured keys. In settings you can remove them freely. So , if you loose both keys can you just remove them to take control of your account or does iOS ask for security key to remove the keys?

    @barnagoat5541@barnagoat5541 Жыл бұрын
    • On most accounts, I don't know if this is true for apple, you typically get some kind of recovery key (a series of numbers, or some such) that can act as a back up. If you lose your key(s) then you can use the backup code to get into the account and remove them. However, without such a code, no, you would not be able to get into the account to remove the keys. Being able to get into the account (without an emergency backup code) would defeat the existence of the keys.

  • Great vid as usual though gents. Passwords are such a hassle- I don't understand why we don't have a token ring that generates rolling passwords and is controlled from a single password I can use universally. Gonna pass on physical keys. Not gonna drag a dongle around with me everywhere I go. Most of my phone usage is in my home office; my keys are hanging elsewhere.

  • Love this video. I have an iapd with a usb-c port and a iPhone 14pro max with lightning. I guess I would either have to buy yubikey of two keys, one for each port. Correct?

    @robertgleason2838@robertgleason2838 Жыл бұрын
    • Actually you wouldn’t need any lighting port ones - the iPhone has NFC so it’s wireless, and if the iPad is USB-C, any of the USB-C ones will work.

  • My wife has her own designated iPad that was originally mine. Right now, she uses the same sign on for her iPad as I do to sign on to my own iPad. It’s basically like I have two iPads but she uses one and I use the other. 1) Can we share the same security key to sign on to my account from either iPad? 2) If she doesn’t have my key available to her (I’m out running an errand), can she still sign in to my account using the original password? 3) Are these keys only to get into my Apple account or can they be used to unlock the Home Screen or to enter apps like my bank?

    @Itsme-vo4fx@Itsme-vo4fx Жыл бұрын
    • You can share keys, yes. Keys aren't a replacement for passwords at this point - you'll still need to know them - but they're a step in that direction. At this point, they're a replacement for the six-digit two-factor authentication codes that you have to enter when you set up a new device. (So you won't be using these keys all that much.) With regard to third-party apps, we'll see how that shakes out.

  • I still dont understand what I do with these keys? how do i use that? do I need it every time to unlock the phone? do I just have to hold it near a phone when I want to log into a website account? how does that key know my password for a specific account like my bank account? • The Apple ID password is the easiest one to be changed by a thief who stole your iPhone after he sees your passcode. Even the 2FA won’t help. So, should the phone no attached to that Apple ID must be from another iPhone? Any advice?

  • The Idem Key is definitely on the cooler looking side with its fancy button. As for the lack of a metal ring around the keyring hole if you encounter something that's torn through the plastic body of these you've probably got worse things to deal with.

  • Hi, would this work to block people on the same Wi-Fi and router? How can I protect my info on iPhone and iPad? PLEASE HELP

    @lucretiaisom987@lucretiaisom987 Жыл бұрын
    • Hey Lucretia, Thanks for your comment and question. While blocking people on the same Wi-Fi and router can be done, it's not something we cover in our videos. However, there are plenty of ways to protect your info on your iPhone and iPad. You can turn on two-factor authentication in your settings, which adds an extra layer of security to your device. You can also enable a passcode to prevent unauthorized access. Finally, you can use a VPN to hide your IP address and encrypt your data. Hope this helps and keep watching our videos for more tips and tricks for your iPhone and iPad! Best, David We ❤️ our channel members: kzhead.infojoin
