Japan's flag is one of the most iconic and easily recognisable. Known in Japanese as the Hinomaru, it symbolises the sun and by extension the emperor. Popularised by games like Call of Duty: World At War, and as seen in many iconic photographs and videos from the Second World War, the Japanese also famously used the "Rising Sun Flag", known in Japanese as the Hiashi. @Jedem Das Seine Actually Turkey has very close realitionship with Romania and Hungary. All three protecting each other in international politics and they have a really good import, export rates so politicians always acts like they always have been good bodies.

@@ChristopherNFP Don't forget to also look for the _Hinomaru._ In my home country (the United States), the military flags are usually depicted in war films as national flags used during World War II, while the _real_ national flag's use at the time is ignored by the films. Those who don't know much about flags just assume the Rising Sun Flag (both of them) was a national flag during World War II (kind of like the German Nazi flag, but not a party flag), and not what it really is: a military flag used almost continuously by Japan since 1870, and still to this day. In short, look out for the national flag, for it does not usually make the war films.

Having lived in Japan for 25 years, and been preoccupied with other aspects of life in this amazing country I’ve never really had any opportunity to delve deeper into the questions surrounding Japan’s flags. This brief and informative documentary helped a lot. Of course, for all the time I’ve been living here I have been aware of the sensitivity surrounding Japan’s flags. Living here, you can’t help but notice its absence from daily life. Unlike in my native Australia, this country’s flag never gets used in TV commercials, billboards, or other forms of social education. In Japan, the Hinomaru is just simply missing from the public agenda. Yes, it hovers over city administration buildings and public schools. But its presence is part of that building’s design only, like a “wall” or “elevator” would be. The national flag rarely publicly reminds residents nor visitors which country they are in. The Hinomaru comes out on buses, trains, and urban street poles on public holidays only, and is quietly folded away the following day. On holidays perhaps one neighbor out of ten thousand might hang a Japanese flag up on their access to the street. People here seem to “be OK” with their flag, but the overall accepted Western version of historical events has obliged the individual Japanese not to “love it”. Those people who display the Hinomaru on days that are not public holidays are seen as extreme right-wing nationalists who are shunned by the majority. While there is much ongoing criticism internationally of Japan’s actions in history, one can’t help but feel sympathy for the confused typical young Japanese and their uneasy relationship with its flag. Sporting events are a rare opportunity for the individual Japanese to wave a flag that depicts the usual pride that peoples have towards a common identity, belongingness and success on the international stage, yet at international away sporting events though, particularly within Asia, Japanese supporters are warned by its government of the risks of flying any flag that symbolizes Japanese pride. All nations’ flags carry history. Few nations can be totally pride of its history. The Japanese certainly have issues of history it needs to deal with internally. Yet perhaps more than most people, the Japanese are aware of and struggle with the relationship between history and the flag that represents it, the present and the future.

There was never a change: the rising sun flag was not the official national flag of Japan even in those days - it was the country's military flag and was often popularly used with the regular national flag, but the national flag was the same as it is today.

This flag has been in use since before the war. Many countries must have a history of war and colonization. It's like saying that the British flag should be abolished.
There is a wartime flag that was created during WW2, the Taisei Yokusankai flag. The flag is not well known to foreigners, but it was created during the WW2 war and is no longer used after the war.

yeah i agree with this. the difference between this flag and the Nazi one is that the Nazi flag was the flag of the Nazi party that took control of Germany and changed the German flag. it's inseparable from the Nazi party, but the Japanese navy flag was the flag before the war and before the terrible acts where committed its more of just a Japanese flag.
I would rather compare "Rising sun flag" to german Iron Cross (military symbol, often associated with WW2, but not strictly representing any ideology, used by military of these countries to this day) , not to NSDAP flag (made specifically to be symbol of ideology and implemented as the symbol of ideology, being in use ONLY when country was run by followers of that ideology).

@UCAk61SHJsXG_h-BgiIDDJyw Aye, but the Japanese forces were also still committing atrocities before WWII in earnest so it's a specific example that's further complicated by not falling strictly within the confines of a single regime or conflict. It's comparatively easier to draw distinctions with - say - the Swastika and the Iron Cross. One represented this party/organization/regime - the other has a longer, more varied history. To play devil's advocate against my point, though - if there were any Herero around today they may even have an issue with the Iron Cross as a symbol, regardless of WWII. I suppose the inter-war period and WWII were such a hyper-charged climate in regard to national symbols and identity that it tends to make everything else more gray in comparison.
Don't think the Rising Sun Flag is okay to be used nowadays because it is older than the Japanese imperialists. In that logic, the Swastica has also existed for thousands of years, it was originally an Indo-European alphabet and the Nazi took it as their symbol to exert the "Aryan superiority." Yet the swastica is literally banned in most of the world. The Rising Sun Flag is the same. Although it may have existed since before the Japanese Empire, it still was used as the symbol of their imperialism and hundreds of millions of Asians suffered under that flag. Westerners are in no place to justify their use.
The Mitsubishi one was incorrect. That one was a merger of two symbols. One of 3 diamonds the the other (I think) was of a fern.

@History With Hilbert I saw it on a random KZhead video once (no idea which one I'm afraid). It was an attempt to satisfy the two families that were merging. If you see the original two it's quite clever. Type in “mitsubishi symbol creation” into google and you’ll see it.

The Nissho flag(Hinomaru) was first adopted by the Shogunate as a ship flag on the high seas. The Rising Sun Flag has its roots in the military flag used in the Revolutionary War by the Revolutionary Army centered on the Satsuma Domain. As the new government, they adopted the Nissho flag(Hinomaru) as the national flag and the Rising Sun Flag as the military flag. Even now, the national flag is the Nissho flag(Hinomaru) , and the rising sun flag is used as the military flag.
For Koreans, the rising sun flag feels like the Nazi symbol. It makes Koreans think of things like massacre and war
Those who were educated after World War II were brainwashed by the brainwashing education program designed by the U.S. and Syngman Rhee at that time. Before the Japanese rule, Korea was ruled by the Yi Dynasty and a handful of yangban who exploited the people. The infrastructure and educational system were not developed, and the people were only allowed to wear white clothes. It was Japan that overthrew such a system that treated the people like slaves and laid the foundation for Korea to become a modern nation. Did you know that An Jung-geun was in favor of the annexation of Korea? The Japanese Prime Minister at the time, Hirobumi Ito, was assassinated for his opposition to the annexation of Korea.

Both have a tradition of being used as a sign of fortune and good energy and such and used by the mustached dictator. I was in Yokosuka Japan in 1979-1980 as a U.S. sailor. There were several Japanese naval vessels moored at the naval station there and I was startled to see a Hinari flag at the stern of each vessel. I looked into the history of Japanese national flags at that point. Your post recounts much of what I discovered, and I thank you for letting the world know. One small addition. The reason the naval ensign used the hinari was because it was visible at great distances to approaching or passing vessels. The reason the sun-disk is offset is that it gives observers some indication of the ship's direction or course (I was told this by a signalman aboard my own ship). Again, many thanks, good post!

@@user-ed8wc1yr8s The Japanese government is modeled after the American one (as is France for example, it’s not unique to any country), although in your defense, it was much more free than a lot of western monarchies. Modern Japan was founded 1947. Even before then it took much inspiration from the US.

Just for general knowledge: “land of the rising sun” doesn’t mean the people are “of the rising sun” or named themselves after the rising sun, but it represents, from a Chinese geographical perspective, the location of japan to the East. I like to translate it more as “the perceived origin of the sun as seen from China” lol. Kinda like how the name of China is “middle country.” Its more of a description of location than a true name. But then that’s where most Japanese family names come from, locations in nature.

It's not only in Asia. There's a theory, regarding the etymology of "Europe" that says the name comes from Mesopotamian word "ereb" meaning "descent", so in that case Europe would be "the land of the setting sun".

Japan took the Chinese name when it adopted Chinese culture over a millennium ago (including the Chinese writing system to write the Japanese language). Not only that, but they also took the Sinitic-based pronunciation for the name: _ni_ is based on the old Chinese reading of 日 (read as _rì_ in modern Mandarin) and _pon_ is based on the old Chinese reading of 本 (read as _běn_ in modern Mandarin).

Actually it never changed. “Sun Beam version “ is still the official flag of Today’s powerful Navy, Japan Maritime Self Defense Force , and it is “ Official “. Simple version on the other hand has been the “National Flag”. No charges. Both are appropriate Flags as the Land of Rising Sun.

The Rising Sun Flag corresponds to the flag such as German Iron Cross and White Ensign. If the theory of eliminating the Rising Sun Flag holds, then the flags of the countries that also controlled the colonies (such as White Ensign, US Navy flag, and other europian countries' flag) must also be eliminated. ・ The Rising Sun symbol has been used as a sign of good luck since before the Edo period. The main meaning of the Rising Sun Flag and the symbol itself is "I wish you good luck." The military element was added later. ・ The official flag of Japan is the Rising Sun Flag at any time. @@TheAmubis This also baffles me, but this what makes developing country (3rd world) remains the same or slow to develop is that most of the corrupt politicians are just plain selfish and don't care about their people, and likely incompetent as well which make things worse. Reality is that most government in the world will have some corruption in one form or another, different is how they still contribute back and actually make positive impact to the society, not just let it rot and make society struggling to make it work. Difference is one steal some, other one leaves little back to the people. Both are bad, but former one is lesser evil than the other. It's sad really.

The flag is still being used actively by the Japanese Navy. I see it all the time (20 year resident of Japan) in the Yokosuka Navy Base and Tokyo area.

Fun fact: Finnish Air Force has used a swastika in their flag since 1919.

Correction: The finnish air force or Ilmavoimat used it from the years of 1919 to 1945, it originally came from a man who gifted a Thulin Typ D aircraft to the recently established Finland. The man who gifted the airplanes Eric Von Rosen used the blue swastika against a white background as a lucky emblem and the Finns adopted this. It was later changed at the end of WW2 seeing as how politically charged the swastika design had become during the war.

It's been used long before WWII and still used as a Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Flag. It's not that flag is from WWII as some people want to automatically associate with war. It's a flag used even by the ordinally civilians in many ways, even fishermen or commercial ships or festive events, to think it's only associate with war is because one not knowing the Japanese culture.

Yes true, but japanese is the simplest one. It's just like putting a red chop on a blank A4 Paper. Turns out to be beautiful though. Sometimes simple is better than all this complex design with stripes and stuff. And results turned out to be messy.

The Japanese government barely touches upon the Second World War, and thus the Japanese people know very little of the events that led up to the creation of their modern rival. I think education on the subject and time period could go a long way in mending relations between the two nations.
Japan's rising sun flag, German Empire's flag, Nazi Germany's Wehrmacht Commander flag, and the US Confederated flag all look pretty cool. I'm not a Nazi or a white supremacist, I just think they look like pretty cool flags. I also think the Union Jack and the USSR flag looks pretty cool also.

This might be off topic, but in my school in Singapore we were made to sing Kimigayo once or Japan's national anthem in our history lesson to simulate the wartime experience of students in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation.

Japan never changed the flag, Hinomaru is national flag, rising sun flag is used for a lot of usage and military organization.

If you want a Japanese equivalent of the German swastika, look up the symbol of “Taisei Yokusankai”. The purpose of the symbol actually comes from a political stance. The Japanese rising sun is more like the German iron cross, a cultural symbol thats rooted in their history.

If you look into more of war images of Japan, you'll find that they only flew the rising sun flag when they won the battle. basically the rising sun flag was used for celebration. also the reason why Japanese imperial navy used the rising sun flag is simply because hinomaru just looked like a white flag from the distance on the sea when it's not waved. that's why japanese navy aka japanese maritime self defense force uses the rising sun flag still:)

Honestly if the Rising Sun flag is taboo then most other old military and national flags should also be. Few people want to Union Jack taken down despite the horrors done in the name of British imperialism. The flag of the Third Reich was designed specifically by Nazis as a symbol of Nazism, which is incomparable to flag that was adopted long before the militarists seized power in Japan.
That’s the way I see the black-white-red flag of the German Empire. For some reason, here in Germany, it is associated with Nazism and racism. Personally, I see no issue with it. It is the flag that unified Germany after decades of consisting of bickering nation-states. It showed a rebirth of Germany as a whole, after the decline and fall of the incompetent and falling-apart Holy Roman Empire. It should be revered as the flag that unified Germany. Shame on those that misuse it, but can we really let such a small minority of racist neo-Nazis ruin our nation’s heritage and perception of the past? There is such a despicable shame-culture here in Germany; if anything isn’t 100% politically correct, you get shot down as if you were a Nazi. I hate it, I really do. Yeah I also don’t have personally problem with Nazi symbol. So I can use Nazi symbol in personal. But I didn’t use that symbol. Cuz I respect the soldiers that defending from Nazi in WW2. But many westerners don’t think about it the same way about rising sun flag. I think if you respect your grand father and your grand uncle, then you have to think the same way as them.
You can still see the imperial flags here in the Philippines, they’re usually on passenger jeepneys or as stickers on Oners (jeep like vehicle)

I can say without a doubt that the person who invented Rising Sun is a genius among geniuses and an artist of the highest level.
The perception of old symbols like this one strongly depends on where you live. For instance I live in Europe, so i don't perceive any negative connotations of the Rising Sun Flag. I even used to have a big decal of it on the roof my Honda because I liked the look of it, and nobody had a problem with it. Many fans of Japanese cars in Europe have some form of the Rising Sun Flag on their cars and it's perfectly fine. In the same way now I have a confederate flag on the roof of my Ford pickup truck and it's just a cool design feature (because of the Dukes of Hazzard) without any historical or ideological significance because in my country nobody cares about the american civil war. On the other hand I couldn't drive around with a Swastika on a Mercedes even if I wanted to, but in China I saw action figures of war criminals like Reinhard Heydrich in Nazi uniform, and nobody seemed to care. I presume that people in China perceive Nazi symbols just as some western exotic culture without any deeper meaning.
I live in Australia though which was attacked by the Japanese sure were weren't dominated by japan but POWs still were treated poor and personally I think they should able to fly what ever flag they want it's not symbolic of oppression people need to grow up. Our navy flag has been the same since 19th century. But the Army regimental flags use 8 stripes.

The current one, which was previously used by IJN, is off to the side; it's a subtle difference but they're not the same flags and, to my knowledge, the IJN wasn't a large user of war crimes or abuse like the IJA was.

The rising sun flag isn't like the swastika that was used by the Germans in WW2 but more like the iron cross that was used by the Germans during WW1, WW2 and it is still used today. The equivalent to the swastika would be the taisei yokusankai, which is a white bird with the red sun between it's wings

The red sun (Hinomaru) has been the flag of Japan since 1870. The army and navy used versions of the sunburst design since around the same time until 1945 when both services were disbanded. When the Japanese Self Defence Forces were created in the early 1950's the Ground Self Defence Force chose a similar but different design for its new flag. The Maritime Self Defence Force readopted the old naval ensign exactly. The new Air Self Defence Force which had no predecessors chose a completely different flag that shows distinctly US influences. It still, however, uses the old, pre-1945, "meatball" rondel to mark its aircraft. None of the service ensigns were ever the national flag of Japan any more than the White Ensign or the Gadsen Flag are the national flags of the United Kingdom or the United States respectively.
Technically, in the 90s they made the color or the dot a slightly lighter shade of red so it's been changed even more recently.

As a filipino the rising flag isnt really offensive to us (atleast to the people i know). Maybe because Japan just colonised the country for short time. And the flag is not really emphasized in our school, just the atrocities that japan committed.

I remember seeing the rising sun flag flown on Japanese ships when they pulled into Peal Harbor and went past the USS Arizona memorial. Of course no one I knew, nor I was offended by this but I found it interesting that 70+ years ago that flag represented a nation that attacked Pearl Harbor and now they fly that flag in Pearl Harbor as our friends.

Just for the record the "Army" is JGSDF or Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. To me I just don't see the comparison to the swastika flag. The latter was a symbol representing a specific set of ideals of the nazi party. Which is why it is banned in many places. The rising sun flag was a military flag. Most nations have military variations. Given all the wars fought through history do we then make blanket bans? It would be unmanageable.
