I enjoyed this video up until the point you decided to call a generation of people "boomers". Many times that word is used in a derogatory way. We happen to be your elders and where I'm from, respecting your elders is one of the first lessons you learn when you're a child.

And people (especially tourists) walk out into the road without looking, making me get off my bike if I'm lucky enough not to fall. • I hate three things: 1. People who start filming around them without realizing there’s other people who maybe don’t want to be filmed. They literally aim towards everyone else around them 2. Going out to eat with friends and when the food comes they take forever to take the perfect picture of the dish. I don’t mind them taking one picture but sometimes they take forever to do it, or even move the plate around so they get it perfect. 3. The same friends at the restaurant who spend the whole evening looking at their phones instead of spending time with us. That’s really rude. I’ve never used social media (apart from KZhead and Pinterest), so maybe I don’t know what I’m saying but I find these attitudes to be really rude. Great video!

It’s been on my mind if this is bad manners to not ask in return when I know what their answer will be. I have good relationships and so many people I care about and I never hesitate to ask them how they are when I have time for a conversation.

She wasn't expecting that! 🤣🤣 She stopped in her tracks and said "What did you say??" I repeated my answer with the addition of saying "You're always asking me that question but never honestly stop to listen to my response." After that, she was a little more kind, a little more mindful of manners. Mind you, I'm not an important person but I think it's a bit rude to ask a question and never wait for the person's response.

However much we dislike someone's church attire, we can say at least they've come to service. 😊😊Then maybe some kind person can take that person aside and privately suggest more appropriate attire if/when we get to know them more. Interact with your children!!! Smile at them, talk to them!!! Show them something in the environment, what ever!!! But DO something with them. It really breaks my ❤ to see these babies, trying to get eye contact with their parents and all they do is looking at their phone. As a parent these things CAN wait, it's not an emergency. We just think we have to be available all the time. No, we haven't. We survied many years before the phone was invented. The world doesn't stop, when you are not on your phone for 30 minutes. • Unfortunately, this is so true! When still commuting, there wasn't a single ride on the train, when there wasn't at least one child crying for attention while the parents were on the phone. Even being a mother myself, it was grating on me and it made me angry on behalf of the child. Depending on how the seats were arranged, if the child sat opposite or next to me, I'd often end up talking to the child (I wouldn't have been able to read a book anyway, with an upset child close to me...). Sure, it wasn't my responsibility, but being a parent I couldn't help but take pity, and I also didn't want to make a scene telling off the parent. Once, I did say something and was told that the child (around 2) was just crying because she was tired. Okay, fair enough, but how about taking your child onto your lap and help it settle? Nope, the little one had to cry itself to sleep, because mum was busy on her phone. Anyway, what's the most shocking is, that some of these parents didn't even notice that a stranger (meaning I) was talking with their children, which is just next-level concerning, thinking about it. Looking back, I probably would've been able to take at least one of those children by the hand at one of the stops and leave with it unnoticed by the parents... - It's such a terrifying thought! 😢

  • I’m so glad you’re bringing this up. I believe we’ve gone from one extreme to the other. In the past, people minded their manners but they also catered to others. Then, society rebelled, refused to cater to others, but forgot their manners in the process. When society rebelled, they left their children behind along with their manners. No one was there to teach children how to comport themselves because everyone was too busy working. Every decade it got worse especially with the advent of cell phones, the internet, social media and influencers like Kim Kardashian. Manners have become a thing of the past and people are celebrated for their increasingly bad behavior. Rebellion may have been the initial reason, but what we have today is the result. And we’ve tipped the scales. We need to go backwards in many, many ways in order to begin to go forward. I just hope the world realizes this very soon.

I find it the most annoying thing ever. And in Italy a LOT of people do that, both in the streets and on buses or other public transportation. Like they are the only people left in the world. I don't know how they could expose themselves like this in public, I would be super embarassed! It's a dedicated time for them to talk to me about what we can do to help them thrive in their learning journey. Alas, some students just book an hour and never show up. It's annoying because this hour could be given to another student or just do my own research and class prep.

  • That was brave and to the point, I fully agree. We're living in The Therapeutic Era. People are so focused on themselves, that every little quirk is taken as a personal attack or insult. The slightest nudge and sparks fly. They've become intolerant, feel victimized and "unsafe" (the in-word of the twenties), react entitled and self-righteous. Growing up today, where every whim is nurtured (whether by family, society, or schools), they remain demanding children. The old advice "Never explain, never complain" or "Take it like a man" has been replaced by "Be loud, be obnoxious, raise hell, claim your own..." The saddest part is that this hasn't made anyone happier or more confident in themselves. Those who grew up cultivating inner-restraint know that it allows for contemplation, dignity, and compassion. It also keeps you aware of the realities of life and that no one promised us that life was going to be a never-ending party :)

I wear big, over-the-ear headphones. I can't stand when people or strangers come up and try to talk to me when I clearly have headphones on, meaning I do not want to be bothered. PERIOD. Strangers are not entitled to have a conversation with me, and I wish they would respect my boundaries. When I have to interact with someone, the headphones come off and I have a conversation. When I go to check out and have to interact with another person, I take the headphones off (although I do self-checkout to avoid interactions). I am very polite, been told numerous times that its rare to meet a woman these days with manners, grace, elegance and kindness. I treat others the way I wish to be treated. However I wear the headphones for my sanity. Also to avoid sexual harassment and any harassment from men in the streets.

  • What a great video. I live in South Florida but I grew up in Wisconsin. I'm 69 and I have never seen so many people that are so unaware of what is going on around them as I have here in South Florida. It is crazy. Everyone acts like they are the only person in the world. They are clueless whether they are driving, walking on the street, in a business or standing in a line at a place of business. What bothers me the most is people standing in line for 20 minutes talking on their phones or to the person next to them and then when it's their turn to be waited on they are not prepared. For instance at the PO. Their packages aren't wrapped, they don't have the address or the QR code ready, they don't have their payment ready and the list goes on and on. It slows everyone else down but they don't care about anyone else's time. It's all about them and they don't care. That felt good to vent. Ty!

  • I think it's, in part, because everyone feels so invisible and almost no one is living in the present moment, anymore. They think because they aren't aware of anyone, no one is aware of them. And, honestly, they are absolutely right 95% of the time. Everyone is lost in their own little heads and not living in the present moment AT ALL. I was walking down the aisle at Target the other day and a woman in her 50's walked by and LOUDLY *belched*! She'd made no attempt to hold it in and it rivaled what my teenage son can do! When I stopped and stared at her, I realized she had absolutely no awareness of her environment and she wasn't really even there. Her mind was faaar away in some past memory or some future worry. When I looked around to see if others were reacting like me, I could see no one else was aware of her, either! They, too, were faaaar away. (Granted, it's Target and no one wants to be there. ;) But, unless I'm at a vacation spot, I see this everywhere I go.) No one is living in the present moment anymore and they are missing their whole life!

  • What's incredibly tragic to me is that essentially everything you have posited here in your video are things I was already raised with, already instructed to believe. My mother was an extraordinarily elegant woman who passed when I was 14, and if one day I can possess 1/100th her elegance I will be a very happy and very refined woman. My father was an exceptional husband to my mother as well, and he passed when I was 19. All to say that, these seem like very basic fundamentals of politeness that have been lost in daily life. I'm rare in that I'm a Gen Zer who had "Boomer" parents because they had me late in life, but I often wonder if that may be why I appear to inherently understand the basics of kindness and politeness that seem to be lost on my similarly-aged peers. Excellent content as always, Anna.

I notice, for example, that people listen to loud music in public, or talk about their affairs on the train. People often ask me about my financial situation, how much something cost, or how I am going to finance my pension later. People lack the distance and the feeling for which topics and questions are appropriate in which social situations and which are not. It is really sad, and I wish that the whole old money trend would finally focus on manners rather than clothing.
