The mid-point of the "RPG Trilogy" of the series sees us exploring ancient lands of myth and legends in Greece, arguabley the least Assassin's Creedy game in the series. It's my first time playing it, so where will it land in my on-going ranking of the entire series?
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a 2018 action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. It is the eleventh major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins. Like its predecessor, the game features a large open world and adopts many elements from the role-playing genre, putting more emphasis on combat and exploration than stealth. Naval combat from previous titles in the series also plays a prominent role in Odyssey. The game's plot tells a mythological history of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta from 431 to 422 BC. Players control a Spartan mercenary, who fights on both sides of the conflict as they attempt to find their family and eliminate the mysterious Cult of Kosmos. Odyssey also continues the story arc of Layla Hassan, a major character introduced in Origins, who relives the mercenary's memories through the Animus device to find a powerful artifact.
Development of the game commenced shortly following the release of Assassin's Creed Syndicate in 2015. Following in the footsteps of Origins, Odyssey facilitated the transition of Assassin's Creed into a series of action role-playing games by introducing player-choice mechanics. Compared with other games in the series, Odyssey has a larger focus on historical mythology, and a smaller focus on the conflict between the Assassins and Templars, which is the central narrative element present in most Assassin's Creed games. Throughout the game's development, the team was inspired by other contemporary RPG titles including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Fallout 4. The music of the game was composed by The Flight.
Odyssey was released worldwide for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on October 5, 2018. It received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its gameplay, graphics, characters, role-playing elements, and world design, but was criticised for its overambitiousness, pacing, and the inclusion of microtransactions. The prioritization of role-playing mechanics over traditional Assassin's Creed elements also drew a mixed response from critics and players. Odyssey was a commercial success, selling over 10 million copies worldwide by March 2020. Ubisoft supported the game with several releases of downloadable content, including two story expansions-Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis. Odyssey was followed in November 2020 by Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which features a historical setting in medieval England and Norway during the Viking expansion across Europe and which concludes Layla's story arc.

One of my favorites is the big, boisterous pirate lady on the island who sends Kassandra on all kinds of adventures. Loved her. And who can forget her buddy Socrates. • My issue is Odyssey didn’t improve on mechanics origins introduced, instead they blew them out of proportion. Prime example being looting the same armor over and over again and level locking armor, picking up the exact same gear multiple times just for the stats to be slightly higher made looting feel so pointless. I feel Valhalla improved on it the right way by making every armor unique and having to invest in it to upgrade the stats.

    @jaxthaxton2703@jaxthaxton27035 ай бұрын
    • Yeah valhalla made some subtle and underappreciated changes. I loved that you could pretty much have the same set of stuff the entire game, customized to your playstyle, and just keep upgrading and changing its appearance if you get bored. And it was cool that finding loot usually required a simple environmental puzzle to get to...still better than just walking into a room and opening a chest. And the actual loot itself was much more useful. Instead of a duplicate or inferior item, they were generic resources you could use to upgrade anything you want

  • Origins is my favorite world they've ever made. There's just something special about it beyond the usual high bar. The world feels like it's really turning, the atmosphere, the imaginative interpretation...but odyssey is just a far more fun game for me. The story, the role playing is all lovely, partying with Socrates etc , the hunted system, the cultists system. It's a complete action RPG adventure whereas origins has a beautiful world, a good levelling system and charismatic lead duo ....but the rest of it is pretty middling by comparison. Odyssey does have a lot of filler, but there's so much quality you can just focus on that. However on a second playthrough, I did find the exp levelling way too slow and was extorted into buying that awful booster.

  • You know, it's funny, the way you explained how the hidden blade and Hidden Ones should have linked Odyssey to Origins is...kind of how the Legacy of the First Blade DLC plays out. • I thought so too ..... And the Spear of Leonidas is a far superior assassination weapon than those awkward wrist things ..... Climb the wall in Athens and then do a lap around it learning how to do running assassinations which when perfected allow you to barely slow down and the animations are really good. When Kassandra/Alexios gets close they throw the spear into their chest and as they run by the reach around and grab it and pull it through without stopping. I took some really good photos of how this mechanic works which isn't easy to do. There are other good spear assassination animations like when she sticks it through, grabs it coming out their chest and bending the over backwards and then stomping on their chest to pull the spear the rest of the way through. Or the one where she sticks it through their ears, grabs both ends and twists to break their neck.

But besides that, there's also the dumb idea of having a blade that could accidentally pop out and sever a finger or injure someone you're touching. The spear is far more practical and logical.

  • While I also prefer Odyssey over Origins, I didn't find your reasoning very good, considering is at the end of the video where you give your general impression as to why rather than the indepth comments you tend to give. Also, I think the 1st and 2nd DLC of Odyssey literally addresses your suggestion of mixing Odyssey to Origins, with the 1st one exploring the ideas of the Creed and the hidden blade, while the 2nd expanding the first civilization stuff. I don't think these stories are Masterpieces, and AC is the last franchise I would think of great stories, but I guess there's more good than bad here.

I thought it would be a very typical rehash of Hellan mythos, but it surprised me by delving into the lesser known events, and cultural history that began the decline of the thalassocracy around 430BC, into hegemony, and the first steps in Democracy which would slowly shift regional power through Persia and the Balkans, and ultimately rest within the Roman Republic before that was reorganised into an Imperial state. Its one of those games you just never want to leave. Even youtubers whom ran content on it seemed to really enjoy the game. My only gripe was that reliance on Herodotus, was very misleading. But otherwise I had very little problem with the game. It was very theatrical, and thats rare in this era of cinematic games. - I had much the same impression with ACIII complete come to think of it. As much as I enjoyed Black Flag & Syndicate immensely, they are much more cinematic outings.

The story also has Kassandra eventually kind of settling down, having a family and giving up her mercenary career… until tragedy strikes, of course. There were some great moments and a very moving story. The other story, which I think is called Fate of Atlantis, is like a whole extra game. It puts the player in a completely mythic world of kingdoms ruled by different gods. For me, these kingdoms are a sight to behold. Heaven, hell, and a futuristic Atlantis that is one of the most amazing game environments I’ve ever explored… I’m still there in Atlantis. I took a break to play some other games, but I’ll return to wander around again soon…

It tells the most complete history of "Eve", how her Isu lover helped her to escape and how her baby became the first Human-Isu hybrid which starts the bloodlines of Kassandra, Aya, Ezio, Kenway, right up to Desmond Miles ..... One of the biggest problems with the series is there has been a lack of a modern day member of that bloodline other than extremely brief references to William Miles but I don't think he is part of the bloodline, Desmond's mother was ..... The modern day storyline was pretty good up through AC3 but it really fell apart and had no logical progression since then.

Odyssey I felt like it took me around 20 hours of game time before it really opened up for me Otherwise it felt even more level-gated than anything in origins. I also prefer the combat in origins, I prefer to having the shield and the Shield parrying system I think with this whole franchise though, gameplay and storytelling are of course important, but it can tend to be a bias towards preferred settings and time periods that can really make people enjoy these more than the other For me ancient Egypt is one of the locations and time periods that I have been fascinated by since I was a kid. So it was a joy to explore this whole map even the deserts. Compared to ancient Greece which is beautiful but was never something I was all that interested in. There was also a lot of Greek architecture influence in origins so I still felt like I had seen a lot of the art style in this game already. Locations feel a little less varied as a lot of the islands kind of look and feel the same. But I began to enjoy overall exploration, side quests, the naval combat, and especially the character of Kassandra more and more as I played. It started to feel like this was the best Wonder Woman game you could play lol. So initially I didn't really like this game that much and I was disappointed, but it has now grown on me to be one of the games in the franchise that I prefer Although it also spikes my thalassophobia and fear of sharks.

  • To each their own however Odyssey is a mess of a game in itself. It is a terrible AC game alongside being a not fun grindy rpg. Origins made me care about Bayek and his quest of vengeance. Egypt felt alive the music the ambience the mirages in the desert. It had it all. In Odyssey sure it’s big yeah you get your moneys worth but the entire map is void of character and interesting locations. Almost every part of Greece looks the exact same and traveling across a bland ocean is not the ideal traversal system. Kassandra has no character she is a hollow husk of the player’s thoughts and feelings and the entire play through of some people could be entirely non canon based on their ending so it’s all pointless. If you enjoy it that’s fine but in no way will it ever be better than Origins

If you start with the mindset that it's an low budget The Witcher 3 action RPG set in Greece with SOME references to Assassin's Creed, you will like it. • The microtransactions shouldn't be in the game, that's true. But the idea that the game was made this way intentionally to encourage buying time savers isn't true at all. Odyssey is far less grindy than most RPGs out there. But AC players aren't familiar enough with the RPG genre to understand that doing side quests is necessary for basically any RPG ever made. I always felt I leveled too fast in Odyssey without even having an XP boost so tbh that would just ruin it for me. And I don't see any reason why anyone would buy it just to play less of the game. Makes no sense.

  • I think it's a matter of preference between ancient Greece and ancient Egypt. I love both ancient civilizations and even though improvements were made in Odyssey over Origins, such as with the combat, I found Origins to be the bigger breath of fresh air that the series needed. Odyssey, while more of the same, brought with it an unwelcome amount of bloat and "Ubisoftification" which I think this year's excellent Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was partially designed in response to with its stripped back UI and more immersive way of interacting with the environment.

  • Well I'll say you did get me to reinstall the game but there still are issues here that makes me feel disappointed in the game. Origins was so liked because it was a breath of fresh air and a change to the hole idea of Assassin's Creed creating something new but keeping with the idea, Odyssey on the other hand is cranking it to eleven and adding a bunch of stuff that was fun in the older games without thinking how it works. I mean sure it is fun but it feels unnecessary or there just to keep you doing something but at that same time they ended up ruining the loop of always getting stronger by putting in a very strict and harsh leveling system. Which I'm not talking about level up the character but what happens when a level 5 tries to take on a level 6 or higher which leads to just you getting killed a lot cause your just one level lower then them. So that is one rock in front of you to show a challenge but at the same time they put a rock behind you by level scaling locations you've already been to which makes the game feel heavily railroaded and gives a sense of disappointment or lack of any real progression in the game. I feel Valhalla did a pretty good job on fixing or pulling back on things/issues that Odyssey had and makes you feel like your character is actually progressing, not to even forget that you can now take on harder enemies without worry of being the same level. Plus it makes you feel more like your building a character and actually make your own things rather then just number go up.

  • I'm not sure why you have a problem with the player having the choice to play as either a male or female character? I believe giving the player choices is a good thing e.g. I preferred playing as Kassandra in Odyssey and male Eivor in Valhalla.

    @mattjones1776@mattjones17765 ай бұрын
    • I dont have a problem with giving players the choice per se. But here it seems clear to me that the original intention was for Kassandra to be the sole protagonist, and then they quickly had to add Alexios as an option for whatever reason. It doesn't seem unreasonable to posit that the extra work this created would be at least part of the reason why dialogue scenes feel like a lower quality when compared to Origins.

      @borangedunn@borangedunn5 ай бұрын
    • I agree and I would be much more inclined to play a game if there was a choice.

      @rickh852@rickh8525 ай бұрын
    • It means they had to write the story to be less personalized for Kassandra because everything had to be ambiguous so it would work with either gender. You notice how no one ever mentions or cares about a woman being such a talented warrior in a time where women weren't typically given an opportunity to participate in wars? They had to do that so the gender swap would work. I love how all of a sudden tho "choice is a good thing" when it's a female protagonist we're talking about but if they had a female option in the original AC games to choose instead of Ezio or Edward Kenway people would be pissed. Executives shouldn't be forcing devs to do anything. If the devs have a good idea for it that they want to implement in the game then find, but that should be up to their discretion. That way it's done properly and not in the half-assed way it's been done in Odyssey and Valhalla.

  • I just started a new game on PS5. I racked up 250+ hours on PC when this first came out (Ubi edition, which has Alexios, so I think he's the default character, though the voice acting means I can only stomach playing as Kass). This game is a great sanbox, though I hate the level gating. I utterly loathe the concept of the same animals levelling by area with a passion, fuelled by one-shotting leopards to the head in Origins, until I crossed an invisible line in the desert and spent an hour battling one I couldn't even flee from on a camel, that eventuially killed me when I ran out of arrows and couldn't get the additional 2000 melee hits in before it managed to touch me. Level gated weapons/armour also doesn't make sense, just make it expensive. Having weapons/armour in your inventory you can't use, despite it being identical to others you can, makes zero sense. The "game" as such seems almost like an afterthought, thrown together at the last minute to give some narrative point to hunting, killing and feeding people to sharks (never gets old). ACIII combat is far more enjoyable to me, although having just finished a replay of III (& IV) on PS5, I had frequent issues of getting killed by humans & animals when the buttons seemed to stop working. A lot of the time it was circle/counter, but often enough, I'd be surrounded by enemies and whacking square would just have me twirling my weapon like there were no enemies, despite being surrounded by them. I think it might be a remaster glitch as I have no recollection of this in my PS3 or PC runs a decade+ ago. Connor could pet dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens and cows. Years later, we get a breathless bit of PR about Bayek being able to pet cats. ..

    • Odyssey was never the "origins" of the templars. It's a common misconception that a lot of people still believe for a reason I still don't know. The cult of kosmos was simply a secret organization that just happened to have similar ideologies and methods to that of the templars. The biggest connection they have with them is that they worked together with the order of the ancients (the actual ancestors of the templars) for a certain amount of time until they got wiped out. You can even look it up if you don't believe me. Also, Darius was originally never stated to be the true first user of the hidden blade. He was only mentioned as the first _recorded_ user of the hidden blade but the true first wielder of the blade was never known. But odyssey just reconned Darius as the first one to use it.

    @derekofbaltimore@derekofbaltimore5 ай бұрын
    • I've brought this up in several videos. It's pretty well documented that games with XP Boosters and the like are balanced in a way to encourage players to buy them. Same with Shark Cards in GTA. The free way of acquiring resources is made more difficult to make the prospect of paying to shorten the time it takes to acquire that resource more appealing. When they removed the microtransactions from Shadow Of War they had to rebalance the end-game because it was deliberately designed to be a slog to nudge people towards the microtransactions, something the developers confirmed in an update. This is why I am against microtransactions. They don't allow people to skip parts of the game they aren't as interested in, they allow people to skip parts of the game that have been made deliberately tedious to encourage you to want to skip it. They are deliberately adding tedium and repetitiveness to games and letting you give them money to skip them.

      @borangedunn@borangedunn5 ай бұрын
    • @@borangedunn the point im making is i dont find it tedious I am a person along with a bunch of others who explore every region and truly grind (battling the same npcs over and over for hours for gold or whatever) and thus appreciate a game when it says hundreds of hours or hundreds of things to do Those are games i like and playstyle i enjoy I have never completed a game without doubling the time stated on how long to beat and honestly cant understand how people rush through games that fast To each his own. If a person doesn't want to play a game which due to xp gates requires 80 hrs to finish then maybe they shouldn't buy it (same as i hate racing so dont buy racing games or pvp shooters) but if they do buy it then give em some options I could understand the complaints if i was literally forced to buy microtransactions of if the store link popped up everytime i took a death but that doesn't happen and most of us have never even seen the inside of the store So i chaulk it up to the "grind" is the type of game. Tomb Raider is also an iconic franchise. The Last of Us Part 2 also sold extremely well with a female protagonist who was the focus of the marketing. There's no real statistical evidence to support this theory. It's just an outdated point of view from out of touch executives. As far as the gender split between gamers, it's almost 50/50, so you have almost half of all gamers being female and you'd have to imagine that plenty of male gamers don't care if the protagonist is a woman.
