The NEW Trailblazer Activ is here and there are some MAJOR changes. The Chevy Trailblazer is now a subcompact SUV for 2021. Under the hood is the optional 1.3L turbocharged inline-3 that is producing 155HP & mated to a CVT transmission. If you option AWD you get a 9-speed automatic. On the outside the Trailblazer Activ has some aggressive styling with unique front fascia, and 18in wheels. On the inside you will find special interior appointments that come with the Activ package and lots of safety tech. Is the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer Active the NEW Chevy SUV to BUY?

I bought the Chevrolet Trailblazer LT 2021 and I’ve been loving it since day one.
Hey Joe! First off I wanna say thanks for pumping out all this content lately! Really been brightening my day's in quarantine. Now on the the Little Debbie score. The Trailblazer was a bit controversial when it first came out, but the design kinda grew on me. I like how they are still trying to make a more "off-road" oriented version if you can even call it that. Now There are some good features on it but something that I think is necessary if you are making an off-road SUV is that is should, most of the time, always come with all wheel drive. Given that and some other things about it, I will give it 7.5 Little Debbie Zebra Cakes out of 10.
Joe, I can always gauge your enthusiasm by how you say, "on throttle!" This was half-hearted at best.

Kool Kitties Nah, the Bronco and Bronco Sport both look fairly decent compared to what others (particularly GM) are offering. Midsized body on frame SUVs are scarce these days so the midsized Bronco is a nice addition.
Kool Kitties Actually, I feel that it’s one of the more attractive SUV’s out there.

There's nothing wrong with grocery getters, but there are better ones for that purpose IMO. In brown with the white roof and the 1.3L the Active is an attractive vehicle, but for what it is I sadly don't think it competes with the Koreans that kill it on price and warranty. Loaded up these MSRP for over $30K, and for that money you could get the much better CX-30 from Mazda or the Hyundai Venue for far less or step up to the Kia Seltos for more performance for less. Even the Kia Soul would be an option for those giving up the pretense that they'll ever take a subcompact SUV offroad, as 99.9% wont'.

@@BoopSnoot This will beat the Mazda and Seltos off road or in inclement conditions. Standard tires you actually want to keep instead of swap out, skid plate (the Activ, certainly in AWD, don't know about FWD, actually gets a real one if you look behind the front trim), nine-speed transmission, higher ground clearance. For strictly on-road grocery getting, yes, the Mazda and Kia probably win.
When you reviewed the Encore GX on this platform, you thought the seat bottoms were too narrow. (Which I hadn't noticed originally, but went back and sat in one again and realized you were absolutely right!) Was this any better?
Chevy's exterior looks good, but the interior really needs to improve. Kia and Hyundai are doing such a good job while they are staying behind.

I like the red exterior color with the black roof in the Trailblazer RS, AWD and the 9 speed auto is the way to go. Leather wrapped steering wheel and rear air vent would’ve been a good idea.

Wish they bring back the Trailblazer SS ! Seems like if you want American muscle you have to go to Dodge . They’re dominating the car game right now far as muscle/V8’s !

I don't think this chassis can handle more power, and while you can get it with the 9-speed automatic, Ford apparently think it sucks so much they declined to get it for free from GM. Five years ago they made an agreement that Ford would share its 10-speed RWD automatic with GM if they shared their 9-speed FWD automatic as a technology sharing promise, and now five years later GM happily accepted the excellent Ford 10-speed, but Ford said "uhmmm yeah, thanks but no thanks" even though developing an automatic is hugely expensive and they were getting it for free. Their engineers tested and found the transmission couldn't even effectively use all nine-gears, and it was just as fuel efficient with 8 and was overall lackluster.

Really nice looking vehicle. I like the fact that the AWD is selectable. Yeah Ford Bronco Sport looks more aggressive but I think people will grow tired of the Bronco Sport styling just like they did with the Renegade. My only gripe with this car is the three cylinder engine
I can understand where you are coming from.
Better than I expected, and the price was lower, than expected, too. Definitely needs the AWD version, and IMO, larger wheels. Those 17" ones don't cut it for me, and finally a larger infotainment screen. 🏁🏁

Not much of a Chevy fan, but those good flat seats are a nice feature. With all your snacks.... slim Jim, snickers, skittles, and twinkies, I'm not sure how you stay so fit. I gain 5 lbs every time I hear you talk about it.

I appreciate all the effort that goes on in the background to get access to these cars, kudos to your network of dealer friends who trust you with their cars, it is the ultimate sign of their trust in you and your professionalism. It is amazing how most KZhead Car Channels have made an effort lately to come up with unique identifiers (zonk this, zonk that, twinky here, m&m’s there, others use stacks of coupons to simulate a tablet computer, which I love. Others yet use sticks of truth to measure real or fake exhaust pipes, some use squirrels as an elbow comfort index). I love all these personalities and it just creates an entirely lovable KZhead Universe.
Remember the “Like a Rock” ad tag line from the ‘90’s? I guess it’s now “Like a Plastic Rock”
Just a thought: Four of the Trailblazer engines will equal your GT 350 R engine. Pickle is not available for that trim.

Despite the engine, I think the *front* looks the best in its class, at least with one of the other trims. I would have been sold had back of the Trailblazer been more squared off like a Tahoe (or Renegade/Soul for a closer reference)! The back of the vehicle.. I can't. Maybe next time!

That zeus bronze is not attractive at all on the exterior. Works a little better in the interior. Otherwise not a bad looking subcompact suv. The Mazda CX30 would be my choice in the class however. They just announced a CX30 Turbo as well.

Joe im still disappointed in the trailblazer power train wise. The interior is much better. However my 2006 chevy trailblazer 4.2L inline 6 will no doubt out this new trailblazer. Im currently at 212k!!

Joe great review as usual. But Joe have you ever asked yourself. What's going on with American car brands? Apart from Cadillac Our brands are really going Japanese way. 3cyl is not at all acceptable. There was a time when Chevrolet used to produce only 6cyl and 8 cyl engines. If my late Grandpa who was a car enthusiast ever visit here again. He would ask what happened to real cars? Look what's happening to Buick Joe. I can't believe our American brands doesn't have the same quality it had once. Muscle car segment is cool enough. But look at our sedans?
Trust me I totally get where you are coming from,. I think the smaller engines is to help get their whole fleet through CAFE regulations.

Hard to believe the last Trailblazer top engine choice was a Corvette 6.0 litre V8...now the "big" engine is weaker than some lawnmowers.

I think the smart move by Chevy would've been to make either this trailblazer or it's bigger brother blazer into a bronco competitor... These are good SUV's but doesn't suit it's past history along with it's name plate...
They should make the trailblazer a bronco competitor and turb this into the Trax and get rid of the current trax

German here... I think one of the problems is Euro emissions, they keep changing too fast and its on purpose. First they forced manufacturers to adopt tiny engines with turbos to get around them, but now they put anti-turbo legislation in place to kill that workaround so they aren't as efficient or powerful as they could be. They want to sell the same engine in both regions, so we get hurt too. Basically, the EU is trying to kill inexpensive personal mobility for the masses, in order to force them off the road and into public transport, so only the wealthier will be able to drive themselves and can afford the constantly moving goalposts that drive up costs.
Keep the towel at home for this one... the bronze trim looks neat though.
