Suleiman's Sons: Only One Survived to Succeed Him
Suleiman the Magnificent ruled the Ottoman Empire for 46 years, from 1520 to 1566. He conquered vast lands in North Africa, Hungary, and Mesopotamia, and made his empire one of the most powerful in the world. He was the longest-serving sultan of the Ottomans, and he oversaw a population of at least 25 million people. He passed away at the age of 71, shortly before his army achieved a victory at the siege of Szigetvár in Hungary. Suleiman had many sons who could inherit his throne, but only one of them survived to see his father’s death.
This is the tragic story of Suleiman’s sons.

There are a few inconsistencies here. The main ones being: 1) Hürrem’s birth name was Alexandra or Anastasia. She was known as Roxelana due to her red hair. 2) Shezade Abdullah was the third son of Suleiman and Hürrem, not the second. (Both Mehmed and Selim were born before him). 3) There is no evidence that Sultana Hürrem and Rüstem Pasha were involved in Mustafa’s death - it was a rumour spread by her enemies, which many have latched onto. But the allegations have never been proved. 4) Selim did get a military assignment, like the rest of Suleiman’s sons, as this was the norm for all adult sons of the sultan. In fact, he succeeded his brother Mehmed as Governor of Manisa following Mehmed’s death in 1543. Later, he was assigned to go to the province of Konya. 5) Also, what about Suleiman’s other two sons from when he was a Prince (Shezade Mahmud and Shezade Murad), who both died in 1520? If you’re going to include Shezade Abdullah who died in infancy, then shouldn’t they be included too? There are admittedly a lot of things we don’t know about how things were in history (as records weren’t always kept accurately). But if you’re going to make a video based on historical facts, then surely fact-checking is a must?
Thank you for your contributions, all great points 👍 Video starts with Shehzade Abdullah because I wanted to talk about the period where Hurrem is involved.
shehsade abdullah was not hurrem son it was gulfem hatun son who died don't mistake it
It is well known that Shezade Abdullah was the third son of Sultan Suleiman and Hurrem. He died in infancy. Two of Suleiman’s other sons (who he had had before he met Hurrem) also died in infancy, along with a daughter. It is unclear who their respective mothers were although it is widely assumed that at least one of them was the son of Gülfem. We know all this because of letters found and other historical evidence. Might be good to read those instead of trying to rely on a fictionalised TV show…
@@travelmuse1994 yeah i understand you . i have read a few things but try to think a little logicly . all these kids do not match the birthdays of the children . Hurrem was not pregnant every year and and also suleiman did not have that many kids at young age

Suleyman may have been a big ruler, but he clearly was not successful in ruling his own household. From the harem situation, to marrying concubines and foreigners and the way he raised and treated his own sons. What a disappointment.
Thanks for your comment
He actually ruled his household imo However polygamist relationships not so easy to manage. Again those days many kings not just Ottoman Empire killed their siblings and children because they are always a threat to their ruling which is sad but not uncommon. Even if they don’t wish to become a threat they are lured by king makers causing disruptions. Hence the princesses live longer - don’t take my word for it do your own research 🧐
The concubines were mostly foreigners. Muslim born women could not become slaves under their law.
It’s fiction!, and they were customs and traditions of centuries
about " marrying concubines and foreigners " ... well, he was the biggest boss in his empire, who are you to judge him for whom his heart wanted to marry? :) Those "concubines" and "slaves" were people kidnapped from their countries and forced into slavery and sex services, so why anyone should blame them for being slaves? I think those "slaves" were as "noble" as any other person, because it's only the inner nobleness, the beauty of one's soul, that is really noble ; exterior "nobility" ranks from all over the world were created by power grabbing and wealth grabbing individuals.

Some information are wrong. There is no legitimize in Ottoman place because all şehzades are legitimate, so Suleyman not married because of that with Hurrem he married her other reason that he let her free so she became free from slavery situation that mean for Islamic rules they had to marry. In Ottoman it's different understanding of legitimate children far from western understanding. Also we can't specifically say that Suleyman send to his favorite son to Manisa it is far more complicated than that. There might be fear that Suleyman had to share his grandfather's destiny which his overthrone by his son Yavuz, Suleyman's father. Some historians says that Mustafa had similarities as characteristics of Yavuz. Which may be led Suleyman to not to give him the governance of Manisa etc.
Thank you for your contribution 👍

Because they had to endure the dynasty continued and child mortality rates were very high. There had to be multiple children who grew up as back up plans.

Suleiman had eight (8) sons in this order: Mahmud Mustafa Murad Mehmed Selim Abdullah Bayezid Chihangir TWO Daughters: Raziye Mihrimah You can't go by the TV series "Magnificent Century" for the facts of the Ottoman empire. That's a semi-fictionalized drama. When you produce these type informational videos - which are SUPERB sources - your gotta' fact check. You absolutely MUST.
Thank you for your comments. In the video it is indicated that "Hürrem had never experienced the loss of a child in infancy due to diseases before, unlike Suleiman who had buried some of his children". The video simply starts the narration with the death of Abdullah.
What!!! Is this your video??!!!?? Do you see the title??!!??? Did you listen to the first minute -- the intro to this video?!!!!!? Did you listen to it? Are you able to comprehend??!!?? Your title is misleading and does NOT lineup with the verbiage. Your title and content are in direct conflict. YOU MISLEAD US. In addition, you posted erroneous information. There are learned individuals who have spent enormous manhours studying & researching The Ottoman Empire and what you've posted is equivalent to selling snake oil. This is fradulent and you don't even have the decency to recognize your insult! I advise not taking this video seriously. Go to the History Channel OR read anything reliable. This source is fradulent!
Also it was never proven that Hürrem sultan and Rustem pasha were behind the execution of Mustafa
One moment it's Constantinople and other it's Istanbul. When you make videos like this you have to stay consistent.
There is 0 evidence that Hurrem conspired against Mustafa- even if she did pick sides (which...yeah, probably). This has been debated by historians through the years, and evidence is still needed if you are to present information as if it were historical facts.
You are right. Thank you for your comment.
