Not a bad deal, honestly.
Very clever - nicely done.

Mike waited to be invited to sit down. No unnecessary power moves. It made his actual threat more believable
I noticed that Gus waits until Don Eladio invites him to sit as well (at least in the late BCS scene, I can't remember all the BB examples).
@@MiketheratguyMultimediathats because in both situations, they're surrounded by armed cartel members who want to kill them but probably won't. Only difference is Mike didn't have history with them

I LOVED when Hector talked. He was explicit and specific. Everytime he rang the bell in the future seasons it made me wonder what he could've been saying. It must have been tortorous to be restricted to just bell rings of "yes" and "no".
Such a great character.
I agree. They did a great job retrofitting his character.

Ok now that is funny 😂
People keep saying this is an unrealistic result. What they all seem to forget is that if Hector just kills Mike to show he's a tough guy, Tuco sits in jail probably for the rest of eternity. The reason this negotiation was happening at all is that Hector needs Mike, as he is in a unique position to get to go out sooner. If he didn't need him, he would have killed him instead of even speaking to him once at the coffee shop.
I wouldn't say it's unrealistic. I'm sure Hector doesn't want to risk being killed by such a ballsy guy.
I don't see anyone saying that's unrealistic.
In the end Hector still had the upper hand with Mike's family. I feel it was more a show of respect for the cajones on Mike to make a threat like that in the first place. They're both old men in a dangerous business, Hector may not have much respect for anyone but maybe he saw a little of himself in Mike there at the table.
@@UndeadPasta Hector laughs like Jabba the Hut (in Star Wars) when Princess Leia (disguised as a bounty hunter) threatens to detonate a thermonuclear grenade during negotiations. Jabba appreciates fearless Scum such as himself.
The $50,000 price is the realistic one for taking a false wrap. Nobody going to take false wrap for 5 grand. Hector was hoping Mike was only going to go to 10 or 20. But really even a 100k for a false wrap is realistic. Hector is basically employing him to go to jail, thats about 10k a month for Mike...

"How you manage to live so long with a mouth like that?" - Great quote, Mikes mouth got him killed by Walt, ultimately. If he'd have walked away without provoking Walter (Even though every word he said was true), he likely would have been a Heisenberg survivor.
The fact Mike severely underestimated Walt doesn't really help too.

Bob Odenkirk is just a remarkable Talent. Playing Hector Salamanca and Mike Ermemtraud at the same time is simply brillant.
Interesting comment
😂😂
Wtf
The hell 💀
bravo vince
I never get tired of this scene. Two top-notch actors with a great script.
Don't you mean "actor" singular. Pay attention to the title, there is a story behind it. Bob Odenkirk is such a great actor and a superhuman, he was going around at 20 times the speed of light, changing costumes and make up to play every single character in this scene all by himself. Vince usually wants everything to be as real as possible and he was shocked when the team explained it to him that Bob Odenkirk produced this scene singlehandedly using his superhuman powers (including the technical work behind the scenes) he decided to keep it in the final cut untouched. Our mortal eyes can not detect the capabilities of Bob Odenkirk.

RIP Mark Margolis, one of the best actors ive ever seen
Mike knew they needed him alive. But he also knew if he didn’t accept the payment he would be nothing but s loose end from their perspective. By taking money to change his story he becomes less of a liability bc he can no longer flip on them innocently.
RIP Mark Margolis, loved seeing hector younger and active.
By not reacting to the threat, and making it all about the money, Mike is also taking some of the heat off of his granddaughter in this scene.
interesting thought and makes sense
I love that Hector allows Mike to come in with the gun. Such a flex.
"50 thousand, and the gon is yours". Hector may be the best salesman of all time
If Lalo had been there, he'd be insulted at 50k, then he'd pull it out of his back pocket with a cute smile.
"Fifty thousand... and the animation is yours..."
Mike was not afraid of Hector's threats and Hector was not afraid of Mike drawing his gun. They both knew the other was just posturing. It really shows how long these two men have been involved in negotiations like this; they can tell when the danger is fake.
Interestingly enough, Mike had the leverage here. If they kill Mike, they bring more heat for a witness who fought their nephew all of a sudden disappearing (who knows if he has a cell phone or other things to track him either). Hector only leverage was intimidation of violence towards Mike's family, which most likely worked in 99% of cases. Being Mike didn't back down, Hector had no choice but to give in.
right. but all the younger guys were really on edge as they took the older guys very seriously. you can see from nachos face.
all it takes to impress a Salamanca is a huge pair of balls Mike willing to die for his 50K Walt blowing up Tucos headquarters Nacho going up against the DEA to rescue Lalos drugs
You said it bro
No wonder why Hector is the balls inspector
Dont' forget Nacho going into enemy territory badly wounded and still willing to fight. The Twins respected him after that.
Mark Margolis... RIP. You will be missed
"Maybe I need the 50k more than you do" is the most respectful roast/comeback I've heard.
They did a great job at creating tense scenes like this even though we know none of these characters die until BB.
Except for Nacho that is
RIP Don Hector 😢
Mike is just a tough-ass mother f*cker. He knows when to call the bluff and always wins the pot. Brilliant negotiator and survivor.
It's such a shame that Hector's character was placed into a wheelchair and given a stupid bell for the rest of the show. Watching Mark Margolis act like this and bringing Hector Salamanca to life, like he did is such a gift...he is an amazing actor and deserved more. The level of acting here is top notch. RIP Mark.
you can't get tired of this, it's perfection, every single little detail on every single aspect of the scenes
Mike DID consider his position carefully well before he entered that room. When Hector threatened sending the twins to the motel to attack Mikes Daughter in Law and Granddaughter Mike knew it was BS. Hector was clearly desperate to get Tuco out of jail as quickly as possible. If Hector were to send the twins to the motel he risked both of them being locked up for an even longer time leaving Hectors crew very short handed. Mike had the upper hand from the second Hector sat down uninvited at the diner.
It is also counterproductive to threaten the family of the man his nephew mugged. If anything happens to them, who do you think would the police be looking at? Like it or not, he can’t afford to kill Mike or his family if he really wants to get his nephew out of prison.
Throughout both shows, the Salamancas respect balls more than anything else.
"No more 5000 for you" "The price is 50" "Deal!" *hands over $50 bill*
For some reason that reminds be of the "Buy him out boys" Bill Gates delivers in the Simpsons
rip hector brilliant charecter fr fr
Hector was uncharacteristically reasonable here
Yes this was him being... reasonable. 🧛♀
He had no choice, Mike was willing to die right there and take Salamanca with him.
@@RATEDR138 plus he knew he couldn't kill Mike. If the only witness to Tuco's crime ends up dead, there's no way Tuco is getting out of prison which was the whole point of Hector trying to strong arm Mike in the first place
Hector respects strength while also needing his problem solved. It wasn't in his interest for Mike to die. The $50,000 he paid was a sign that he respected Mike and his giant balls, but he was also mutually being respected by Mike. Waiting to be seated, reaching for the gun but NOT drawing it, and giving a legitimate reason for why he's asking for such a high price. Hector didn't get to being Don Hector without some intelligent decisions, and paying off an enemy falls into that category. If Mike were Mexican, I'd imagine that he would be offered a role in the cartel after this meeting. But that's only speculation
@@tysquirt111 true story, strong respects strong
While he meant to provoke anger from Mike by asking "how he managed to live that long with a mouth like that"...the old adage of, "Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young" comes to mind. Old warriors did not get old by accident; they got old by being wise, having the right knowledge, and being tough. Never underestimate an old man who has grown up in a rough profession or a rough environment.
Hector is an old man in Mexican drug cartel business, he knows.
Mike Ehrmantraut is TV's ultimate badass.

Welp, the one thing we can all agree on after watching this series is that the Salamancas really love big balls...
“Family is all” He threatens to kill his family. I wonder if that quote is why he let him off the hook
The Salamancas really respect someone with courage. Hector -> Mike / Tuco -> Walter / Lalo -> Kim
And that's how Mike gained the respect of Hector... ❤

Hector respects Mike more than his own men, this scene proves that. Hector was making power moves trying to get at Mike and not once did Mike fall for those tactics. He kept his demeanor and carried on with his business which was getting back at Hector but secretly not even Nacho knew what he was up to. Mike is a guy you don’t mess with and you keep your word.
a vietnam sniper vet from the 1960s was an elite soldier. he got away with executing 2 cops from his home town and survived a beating from tuco who killed one of his soldiers giving him a similar beating in breaking bad. an OG like hector would automatically know he was dealing with man of sicario status and old to boot meant he was more dangerous than his own men
…PIPTY TOUSAND. …AN DE GOHN IS YOURS.

it would me more epic if they hug each other after the agreed payment
This is why you don't allow others to have their gun during a negotiation.
RIP Mark Margolis
$50k to Hector is probably not that much money. Hector was tickled pink at Mike's threat. He probably would have been disappointed if Mike didn't hit him with a counter offer. Be wary of an old man in a field where men die young. "How you live so long with a mouth like that?" was game respecting game.
Is the 'old man' quote a meme or not? Why does everyone keep using it? Over and over again
@@Onigirli Think about it. If someone gets old in a field of violence ruled by the young.... then he 's either reeeeeeeal lucky or reaaaally damn good an someone you dont dare think lightly of

I like to imagine that Mike saw some serious shit in Vietnam as a soldier. Maybe with military reconnaissance or scouting. Something that really fucked him up.
Can't believe we almost didn't have any of these people in the show.
Every time i rewatch any scene in BB or BCS, i immeadeatly remember every character’s death scene. I saw Nacho and Mike and i thought :” One killed himself bc of Gus and the other was murdered by Walter in the future”
I do the exact same thing.
yup
The one thing I am curious about is the gun. It's presence gives Mike a nuclear option & allows him to up the $ amount X 10. .. but Hector allows it.
That little hand flutterto get Mike to sit - am I imagining it or was Vince having a little play with how important that hand flutter gesture becomes to Hector in his chair?
Fifty thousand an the goan is yours
dude, drinking coffee that late, no wonder he had problems with heart
PURE WISDOM FROM MR.SALAMANCA
He had to do what he did in both making the deal (only way to protect his family) but also with this negotiation. If he just accepted the almost insulting $5,000 or let Hector bully him into $0... Mike would be considered a pawn in the crime world... a piece to be sacrificed or abused at any time. Someone VERY easily controlled and who is given zero respect. While he still cares about his family this adds an element of uncertainty and unease regarding Mike... someone who is not so willing to bend or be controlled. As crazy as some drug lords or mob bosses may seem... the only reason they can operate as long as they do, is control. It's when that control is broken or crews get careless, is when it comes collapsing down.
Hector: .. *nod* .. 50,000. And the gun is yours. Mike: .. Money up front! 👀
I always watch scenes like this with Mike and wonder if he has a sniper covering him from somewhere. Dude always walks into situations with an ace in the hole.
This gives off Soprano vibes… It kind of reminds me of the last meeting with Tony and Phil
Sopranos are alot better tho. This prequel is not as good as breaking bad imho.
50 grand + a free gun? mike should count his blessings with this one
Superb series and a superb scene. But - I can't understand why Hector was happy to let Mike come negotiate with him, armed with a pistol. It just gives Mike an element of power he didn't need to. Didn't seem very realistic for Hector to give Mike a card to play like that, which he did.
Both Mike and Hector made a giant bluff play. Hector threatened to have Mike's granddaughter killed to see if Mike could be easily blackmailed, while Mike threatened to start a shootout immediately after Hector's threat. Neither would realistically go through with it since Hector needs Mike alive, and Mike knows that.
Hector needed Mike to keep Tuco out of jail, the only thing Mike needed was a pitiful sum of money.
the gun didnt make any difference. hector absolutely needed mike to reduce tucos sentence to a couple of years. so he couldnt allow his men or his nephews to whack mike, no matter what. hector was testing mikes nerve to see what he could get away with fobbing him off with. if he could scare mike into agreeing with his demands without paying him that would have been a win win for him. but he knew mike was very dangerous and more so due to his grand daughter being threatened, and even without a gun mike would probably have got to him and killed him with his bare hands if need be. that might explain it. having the gun actually kept things civil and clean believe or not.
Mike played it right. He didn't disrespect hector but stood firm and showed he was willing to die to take hector out for the money. Hector could respect that mike was a tough old son of a bitch just like he was.
Like respects like. You recognize when someone is cut from the same cloth as you are.
Breaking Bad audience who've never watched Better Call Saul: "WHO IS THE GON???"
Never noticed b4, but after mike made two low level guys look like scrubs when sent to intimidate him, Hector brought the twins in as they're way better muscle for this negotiation.
But Saul changed Mike`s story. What Saul told DA : "Mike dont know whose gun it was. Mike never saw Tuco threatening him with the gun." Gun was thrown under the car when police arrived, police did not see that Tuco had a gun. Gun had only Tuco`s fingerprints on it, but without Mike testimony there was no proof he robbed Mike threatening with the gun ." So technically Mike broke his agreement with Hector, he did no say : gun was mine. But Hector didnt start to split hairs since DA could not prove armed robbery. Tuco got lighter charge, shorter sentence and that was good enough for Hector.
