  • Ok I have been promising to make this video for the longest time and my deadline to myself to have it up was April so here we go!!! PSA don’t watch this video if you are offended by common sense, brutal honesty and the word sh!t (I said it twice and if you’re coming here to complain about it go back and watch the video again and take away the intended message) 💩 This video isn’t on my usual content topics but on every budgeting and saving video I’ve made I’ve had loads of questions and requests for advice on what to do if you’ve got debt to take care of first so I’m sharing what’s worked really well for me in the past and that I am also implementing myself over the next six months to nail my own financial freedom goals in full once and for all!!!

    • This is the kind of thing they should teach in highschool. Many teens/young twenties get in debts with students loans and credit cards when they start post secondary studies. Unfortunately many carry those debts until they are in their thirties or forthies 😕

    • This is way more valuable to teach than some of the other garbage I had to learn back in the day - even now kids aren’t taught the basics of how to set up a budget or savings plan - crazy!!!

    • @@TheSundayStylist no, nothing of the sort still. I am dumbfounded how we regressed on that. Home economics of the 50s were more valuable then some topics we have now. Also, I'd really like teens to have how to do a resume/CV and to present themself on their first interview. And CPR.

Everyday coffee at the shop... I ended up paying for those and the extra fees that were charged on my checking account (not married anymore)

  • Debt is one of the biggest stressors so anything you can do to address this is only going to help mental health. As you say, it’s all well and good saying don’t do it, but there are real life emergencies that people have to deal with. Budgeting, being honest with yourself, making a plan, talking with your bank are all the best things you can do. Try not to be overwhelmed by the magnitude of what you have to accomplish but focus on the rewards both financial and emotional that will come with each step towards your goal. Best of luck everyone x

I increased my income as much as I could, reduced expenses as much as possible but still have a bit of fun money. I still have a mortgage to get rid of.

  • Putting my accounts in one of those debt payoff things is what made me start paying off debt. I thought $50-$100 a month was a deal. Not for 50 years, and that’s if I stopped using it! 😳 this is way more beneficial than “don’t get any debt”! Again, thank you!

    @susanwright1931@susanwright19313 жыл бұрын
    • Yes! Those debt payoff calculators helps you figure out what you need to do to payoff debt in the timeline YOU want, and if you need to take on another debt you can know how much you are able to take on in order to pay it off quickly. This is what I did when we had a car payment and had to buy a second car. Three years later own both cars in full!

  • Great video as always! Another interesting figure to note when you're looking at how many years it will take to pay off debt at the established minimum monthly payments is to also look at how much in total you will have paid at the end. The debt, for instance, may have started at $500 but may end up much greater than that as interest accrues while the debt is being paid in the minimum monthly payments. Debt-free is very liberating!

My late husband and I had the same money mind set (thank goodness). My last boyfriend was horrible with his money. My current relationship, thankfully he and I have the same money mind set. Don't pay the minimum on credit cards. Pay as much as you possibly can. Paying just the minimum will get you no where.

I tried this with one of my cards but it ended up costing me more in surcharges, fees and cash advance interest every month. My credit card does not consider utilities and bills as typical purchases so they charged cash advance interest straight away until i paid it all in full. Personally for me it wasn’t worth it. Trying to work everything into the statement period and the actual due date was a nightmare initially too 😅 Can not wait to see how you get on with this and your updates. I would definitely love to give this method another go but with my everyday purchases and living expenses.

At some point I would like to retire and not still be paying off dinners and junk I bought a decade ago. The one point I don't agree with is closing accounts. I have the cards, if I start to lean on them again too hard,, I will cut them up. I will not close them. I live in the US and if I close the account my debt/available credit sinks like a stone. If I close it I lose decades of longevity on the credit history. I have worked my butt off to raise my FICO score..Credit history, debt ratio, and payment history are what determines FICO scores. Renting Apts, finance APR and even some job employment depends on a high FICO. Really investigate before shutting it down.

  • Once apon a time and I am dating myself on this one, stores allowed "layaway" it was a way to get what you needed or wanted , BUT the items were paid in full before they left the store. It cost little to no money. Now, people can swipe their life away in a handful of swipes. The credit card puts a GPS on the buyer until it is paid off. The cc companies are getting fat on the interest alone.

  • Brilliant video full of really practical advice. I love your "no nonsense" approach and that you tell it like it is. Your content is awesome x

  • "Don't get into debt in the first place" is like saying "you've got no reason to feel sad" - well I AM in debt, that advice does not help me one iota. And on that note, I think it's my experience with debt that has taught me the lessons I know now. Debt is NOT ALWAYS BAD. It teaches discipline and obligation but probably most importantly provides the gift of time. If you have to borrow money to buy a new car because your current one has died, borrowing money allows you to get on with life now as opposed to saving for however many months/years (no problem if that's what you honestly prefer doing though)

  • Girl I need some Visuals because I’m having a hard time following your repayment method. Are you talking about velocity banking or borrowing with a HELOC or credit card?

    • Do you mean how I said I use my credit card that I am focusing on paying off to pay for all my essential expenses and put as much of my earnings onto that credit card every pay cycle? It's so the money that's going in reduces the overall balance that interest is being charged on and the new charges usually have minimum 55 days interest free. Just make sure you are putting in more than you are paying off each month (obviously) and then try and get your credit limit reduced each time you pay off $500 or $1000 (depending on your credit limit!) so you don't end up back in credit debt 🌞

  • at 26:00 you stated that there are scripted lines that you can say to approach your bank in reducing interest, can you point us as to where these scripts are?

    • Google this “what to ask to reduce your credit card interest rate script” or something similar The Barefoot Investor also publishes a word for word script for this and other services eg insurance you can apply similar to utilities etc 👍🏻
