Chessboard made from Firewood | Walnut and Spalted Maple

In this video, I make a chessboard out of what would otherwise be firewood logs. But these logs have special sentimental value. The client drove about 700 miles in an ice storm three years ago from Alabama to my place with a load of logs that were from trees that his grandmother had planted decades ago at the family home where he now resides. It was a lot of extra work to mill the wood from logs that had a lot of insect damage and wood rot, but it was worth the effort to make him something that he can cherish as a family memory.
I used a TopTes wood moisture meter which came in very handy because I needed to be sure that the wood had the right moisture level before proceeding. If you'd like to pick one up, you can use this link and discount code to get an additional 10% off. amzn.to/3IJvVBj The 10% discount code is 96NKLX68. If you'd like to enter the giveaway for the TopTes TS-630 moisture meter, please review the Giveaway Contest Rules below. [Contest closed on April 30, 2023. • LOVED the piece the spalted maple did wonders to change what would be a blander area. I never dreamed of using a core of plywood I bet it does prevent warping.

  • Wish I could craft fine wok like this. I'm going to look through more of your videos to see if you ever make items from the perspective of those of us that don't have bandsaws and belt sanders. I've got a good table saw, miter saw, planer, hand held sander, hand held router, and jig saw. My shop has no room for joiner, belt sander, or bandsaw unfortunately. This the first video I've watched and I will be looking at more of your work. Keep up the great work and content.

  • The spalted maple really stands out. I was surprised that the walnut rotted so much in just a few years. I guess the insect damage had been working on the interior of the log for a lot longer. Beautiful board even with the challenging material.

  • A method that I’ve found really helpful. Quarter the fresh logs and let them dry in quarters before milling them up. You get smaller widths, but they are all quarter or rift sawn and doing it this way minimizes checking.
