Cagney is a 17 year old feral cat, rescued in front of a bar in Brooklyn, NYC as a kitten. He recently had a bad toe injury and a subsequent infection. He is unsteady on his feet, limping and even wobbling at times. Landing hard from the jump that caused his toe injury may have made him more uncomfortable and potentially misaligned his spine, hips, neck and back. Today, Dr. Doug Willen, the Animal Cracker makes a house call to see Cagney, and his owners Tony and Amelia, in their NYC apartment.

What is the difference between a stray cat and a feral cat?
Pet and stray cats are socialized to people.
Feral cats are not socialized to people. While they are socialized to their feline family members and bonded to each other, they do not have that same relationship with people.
Community Cats
“Community cat” is an umbrella term that refers to any member of the Felis catus species who is unowned and lives outdoors. Both feral and stray cats are community cats. Community cats have a wide range of behaviors and degrees of socialization, but they generally do not want to live indoors and are unadoptable.
Stray:
A stray cat is a cat who lived indoors and was socialized to people at some point in her life, but has left or lost her home, or was abandoned, and no longer has regular human contact.
Over time, a stray cat can become feral as her contact with humans dwindles.
A stray cat may be socialized enough to allow people to touch her, but she will become less socialized-or even feral-if she spends too much time without positive interaction with humans.
Under the right circumstances, a stray cat can also become a pet cat once again. Stray cats that are re-introduced to an indoor home after living outdoors may require a period of time to re-acclimate; they may be frightened and wary after spending time outside away from people.
Feral:
A feral cat is an unsocialized outdoor cat who has either never had any physical contact with humans, or human contact has diminished over enough time that she is no longer accustomed to it. Most feral cats are fearful or people and are not likely to ever become a lap cat or enjoy living indoors.
Kittens born to feral cats can be socialized at an early age and adopted into indoor homes.
Alley Cat Allies does not, in general, recommend trying to socialize a feral kitten over 4 months of age. Socializing is time consuming, especially for older kittens, and results are not guaranteed. Learn more about socializing kittens.

I gained the trust of a feral neighborhood cat by talking to him. He visits my porch to be fed, but would run away if you made any movement towards him, even if it was setting a bowl of food down for him to eat. I found that if I provided a running commentary about everything I was doing he would stand there and actually listen, and not flinch or turn away to run. After about 6 months of regular verbal interaction with him, he’s gotten to the point of allowing us to touch and pet him. So yes, talking is very important.

Yes. Cats are not usually very verbal, but we had one rescue that I would talk to who was kinds like a lump. Then after several months he started talking back to me every day. Our other rescues loved the interactions and loving words and intentions both my husband gave them every day.
I love how these two grown men are being so loving toward this elderly kitty. Their compassion says tons about the kindness in their hearts.

Cats may be predators but due to their size they are also prey to larger predators. Cagney acted like he really liked you Dr. Willen, he was very calm in the beginning, and only wanted to escape when the pain became too much. He did not take it out on you. He was a very nice cat.

Very, very interesting info on how cats and other animals respond to your talking to them, asking permission and giving them time to recognize that you are there to help them. Cagney was totally on board with all your explanations and welcomed your healing hands. He made a little fuss at the end....but Tony let out a louder shout than Cagney while you adjusted him. I was sitting here towards the end of Cagney's sessions thinking 'please let the Dr help you please!' and he did - you could see his little leg relax just a smidge. I know we have to manager our expectations - Cagney's eighteen years old - he's not going to suddenly become a pouncey kitten - but I could see the sheer relief at about 14:45-ish when you adjusted and he sort of lay down with relief - good job, Dr. Also interesting to see you help a human patient!

My 11 year old feline was purring against the phone. Like it could understand what was going on and loved the ‘vibes’ . Had one cat that was 22 . She was almost human by the end ( or she’d trained us to be cats?) Sure wish I’d had Dr Doug for her

Until we offered her the cat milk and then she was happy. She was going night blind so would jump up to turn on lights in dark rooms… 2 am and the house was blazing with her asleep on the couch

Cats are creatures of consent-they do things in their own way on their own time. They won’t let anyone touch them if they don’t feel comfortable with them. The way he approached slowly, speaking softly, getting the cat comfortable before touching him was the best approach. Well done.

Nice adjustments on that cat. He was in alot of pain when you got more towards his hips. And the left leg is slightly atrophied. I'm a Trigger Point Myotherapist that works with dogs, horses, and cats too and it's refreshing to hear you tell people that when you work on a point that it's good they lean into it. Your absolutely right...that cat seemed like he was in heaven after you adjusted his neck...great job. It sounds like you had a great horse teacher too..your comments were right on. The work I did on my rescue cat Toothless really helped her cerebellar hypoplagia...its almost barely visible now. Only when she plays really hard do you see her wobble and fall over...

I brought a feral cat home from our local shelter to join our barn cat crew. She lost her leg in an illegal steel jaw trap so was understandably afraid of humans. I talked to her everyday when feeding my crew and she would listen so intently. After about 6 moths she will now let us pet her when she’s eating. She’s an amazing little warrior! They do listen.
Hi Doctor. Love the work done on Cagney. Always a pleasure to watch you work with animals. Gentle FYI: Cats are predators AND prey food. You are big, so in their minds it is possible for you to eat them. Yes, there are cats that just loooove people, but in most cases one must earn a cat's trust. You have good "cat manners" by taking your time and asking permission before doing what you do so well. Also avoiding direct, prolonged eye contact and "slow blinks" when there is eye contact are very helpful if a cat seems nervous (but you probably know that already). Thanks again for all of the healing you bring to the world around you.

The black and white tuxedo kitties are so stoic and strong....I have had 20 of them over the years and all of them have the will to live and are smart,playful and develop a strong unbreakable bond with their rescuers.....

I'm good with babies because I always become aware of my breathing and slow down and breathe deeply when I hold them. It takes patience, but it usually works to help calm them.
Yes, slow belly breaths, just like a baby is comforting. It helps me go to sleep when my mind is worried about tomorrow. I always slowly rubbed my kids' heads to soothe them. Lightly patting their bottom and rubbing their backs in slow motion does wonders, too. I have to pay to get a massage! Is that fair?

I love the fact that he talks to the cats. I really have no idea what it is, and Im not even gonna try to guess, but I always get the feeling that the cats are listening when I talk to them. They'll turn their heads and look at me while I talk, and they'll wait until Im done talking to turn back to what they were doing. I think they just like that youre interacting with them, involving them somehow.

A few years ago a new giraffe transferred to our local zoo. He arrived with a kink in his neck. He had a chiropractor come visit to work out the kink and has regular checkups and he does yoga stretches to keep his neck limber. He is a gorgeous creature and very well cared for and loved. Before learning this, I had never thought about animals getting chiropractic treatments. No, I don't work at the zoo, I'm just a huge fan of the animals.

Horses can hear your heartbeat so when you’re stressed they can literally hear your heart rate. Because they are prey animals, this puts them on the alert. So when you’re calm, your horse is calm. Edit: He mentioned soon as I wrote about them using your energy to assess fuming danger.
Horses are herd animals with survival instincts......they are not at the top or the bottom of the food chain....their survival instincts are more heightened than most! This does not make them easy prey and in a herd they are very dangerous if threatened....their senses of flight or fight are quite predictable if you have the ability to get inside of their head and connect with them....most all animals can be "read" in this way if you have the patience and know how.....if you have this God given talent you are one with the animal....neither controlling or being controlled....you are accepted and trusted.

Once I found your KZhead channel I subscribed. I saw how you massaged the animals. Although I don't know how to adjust and align my pups. I do massage them on the spine until they do the release. My male comes to me to do the massage in the morning and when time for bed. My female not so much. But there are times when she's stretching that I do it and she just literally just stop with the kisses.
