  • I made an error in this video saying this UX has a Core2Duo, The CPU in this machine is an Intel Core2Solo U2200 1.20 GHz. Fun fact: did you know it's possible to replace the Core2Solo with a Core2Duo CPU and some fine soldering skills. It has been done by some skilled VAIO UX owners in the past. I will need to learn more soldering skills before I can try that myself though :)

    • Correction on Intel's first 64-bit CPU: That honour goes to the ill-fated Itanium which was intended by Intel to be their replacement for x86 but did not catch on beyond some use on servers and workstations. The first x86-64 chip by Intel was a Xeon model called _Nocona_ and the first consumer-grade Intel CPU to come with x86-64 was the E0 revision of the Prescott core.

  • Seeing the Lumia running W11 so badly makes me want to see Windows phones come back. With a few tweaks it could be amazing and give a totally unique mobile experience with the taskbar, especially as W11 now runs Android apps so wouldn't be many downsides as I assume you could find a way to sideload most android apps and google services needed to run things like YT. I would 100% rock one.

    • Same here. For a long time I hated Microsoft for killing off Windows Mobile as I saw it as a true Windows on a phone experience but now I'd gladly take a modern Lumia and, as you say, Android app compatibility would fix the issue of lacking app ecosystem

I elected to leave it on XP as it just really isn't up to running even 7. • I love the fact you tinker with older tech on this channel like me. We all likely have a tech graveyard. Of the days past that were top of the line, then eventually fell out of favor. And finally, ended up relegated to a drawer or box. But I love picking up old tablets, watches and phones I have and searching for custom roms for them, to see if they can be updated. Mainly just because I can. But also, I hate the fact we create so much e waste. If I can find little jobs these old techs can do for me. Maybe just one job. But do it semi capably around my house (for instance an old tablet for bathroom music). That can just sit on a shelf in there and stream music when showering or getting ready for the day), then that is a win for me. Thanks for the interesting videos! ❤❤❤

  • Also, a tool called "MSGM Toolkit" can be used to make custom Windows ISO's. I usually will start with a Windows Server ISO, to get the cleanest base with no bloatware, than you can strip EVERYTHING with MSGM Toolkit. From the Microsoft Store and Cortana, all the way down to Windows defender, the start menu task bar and explorer.exe itself, etc. Obviously it can go overkill, but it's way more powerful. It's also open-source and just functions using simple DISM commands. Windows defender in particular, is very taxing especially on old hardware. Obviously it's never exactly a good idea to remove your anti-virus, but for situations like this video it make sense.

There were a ton of chipset limitations and a 32 bit memory controller (from what I remember) on some early chipsets that limited early Core 2 CPUs to 4 GB or less of RAM despite being technically compatible with more. It was a strange time. You'd find IDE and SATA on the same board and tons of crossover options to maintain backwards compatibility with older standards.

  • Id recommend using a windows 11 Iso from ghost as its more structured out features and tweaks wise and seems to offer the best performance on lower spec hardware.

  • its nice someone 0ut there cares about this and is keeping it alive. i wish reactOS woiuld catch up already so we could revive our old beloved mini pcs. i love this little computer, used it for college with a stripped down version of windows 7. i much prefer the oqo model 02. its what i always wanted and i want one with a 12th gen intel core or the new chinese via centaur generation cores but sadly can't just transplant its guts and swap. i would still use this stuff if everything wasn't so incompatible with current gen stuff. they make amazing office PCs and the GPD win series doesn't capture the pocketable, fancy keyboard nicheness utilitarianess this retro stuff has. i loved the viao UX series, biggest reason was you could install Chell graphics driver mod and play GTA San Andreas on the go....friggin loved that. but nowadays the GPD win series just blows that away really great for music, never getting rid of my UX50 lol

  • Hi, Janus! I watched the video and i thought that it would be pretty interesting to install the following systems on the VAIO: 1. Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Pro or maybe Windows 8.1 RT3 (For Surface RT) and maybe even Windows 8.0 build 9200/8400. 2. Windows 10X (Find a tutorial how to install) 3. Android x86_64.

    • @@JanusCycle I've been using Windows 8 for quite a long time, I'm just curious how would it act on devices like this. It might actually be a lot usable with the full screen start menu and the gestures. Plus embedded industry pro is intended for use in low-end pc's. Windows 10X is just like ChromeOS(Would like to see it on vaio too) but capable of running Desktop/UWP apps, and intended for the tablet pc's, but it requires Microsoft Account, and there's just no way around. Thx for the reply!

    • @@JanusCycle maybe it would be cool to see Windows Embedded Standard 8 and Windows Embedded Compact 2013 with custom shell. Windows 10 IoT would be cool to see too. Out of all this OSes i haven't installed only compact 2013, but if windows 11 has installed, why wouldn't it?

  • I like the form factor of the vaio a lot. I think i'd try to fit one of the new single board pc's inside the shell, it would take some work to wire the controls though. actually it would be great if someone could upload a full scan as a 3d file to Grabcad. That way i could 3d print a close recreation and install something way more modern inside.

  • Were you unable to find the graphics driver for the VAIO? I'm sure graphics drivers made for Vista x64 or 7 x64 would work on Tiny11, or even the full fat version of Windows 11.

  • #Janus Cycle... Fab Video. Greetings from Perth WA. I have a Dell Latitude ST 10" tablet. It is a rebadged Computer Motion CL900 with a z270 (z260) single core atom x86 1.5ghz CPU and 2Gb ddr2 ram. I have just got Win 7 SP1 going on it but as it is x86 only, my options are limited. W11 is x64 only. Any thoughts on an OS upgrades? It uses an mSata and I have a few of those up to 1tb. I managed to get the drivers to get it to windows 8. Apparently the last version of W10 it can run is 1607. the 1st anniversary of W10. The Tablet has some great features which I don't want to lose. EG Pen, handwriting recognition, etc. Cheers Mate - David
