Thank heavens that orange cheeto was so clumsy, inadequate, and disrespected in his grab for power. It was scary see so many good people leave office during that time. One by one the American people lost their defense against his push towards insanity. It's the integrity and honor of those military men that saved us through that, and will hopefully save us if that asshat - or those like him - ever gets re-elected.

Rachel quoting trump from years past - “You’re a puppet” and “I alone can fix it” - just goes to show how long he has been setting himself up as a strongman dictator.
His political career was based on locking up his political opponent. It’s been the approach right from the start and people just brushed it off as Trump being a funny change from the norm. People treating politics as a game show or a sport to support your team enabled this

I never dreamed that the last 20 years of my life would be fraught with worry about such horrors.
Grateful my parents who went through WWII have passed and not seen or experienced criminal defendant 45. Surprised that its almost 3years since his insurrection, which now he refers to as a problem, and he’s still free to install himself as first dictator? I have to renew my passport before 2024, I won’t remain in this country, and am reminded how people fled Europe during Hitler’s regime.

Dear America - Boy oh boy have you become a country of contrasts: On the one hand the mindless, valueless, sociopathic-led Trumpf clown parade - and on the other hand people that you should be so, so proud of - as demonstrated so wonderfully in this interview: Both Stephen and Rachel have been two screen personalities with real intelligent 'bite' and substance, and genuine values... that have informed us - and entertained us.... yet all the while keeping their eye on what is important. I have watched them both for years now, independently. So to see them together ? Now that is a treat. QUESTION: How to get the tens of millions of gullible Americans detoxed away from that dangerous MAGA cult before it is too late ?
Oh Wow, if we knew the answer to that, then the world would be a better place for everyone. The MAGA nuts are the ones electing these toxic politicians in at the ground floor, allowing all the crap to float to the top where it's stinking up the place. They need Jesus - the REAL Jesus, not the phony commercialized angry doll they've been force fed by radical evangelicals. Failing that, they need Education (NGL our country needs more of that in general, both the arts as well as the sciences, because we need art to learn empathy, and sciences to learn to think for ourselves).
De-programming cultists has proved to be extremely difficult - we found that out with the (now largely forgotten) "Moonies", another case of a cult leader scamming his followers out of their money.
Sadly, no idea. I even asked a psychologist and they admitted cultists need to have some small desire to be cured in order for any treatment to have an effect.
The only way would be for the MAGAts to operate from the same reality that the rest of the world is experiencing. But that can't happen because they exclusively watch Fox and other propaganda. Facebook caters to their skewed, sick alternate reality so it becomes a loop. I don't know how that can ever be changed, under our First Amendment. But we DO have many to be proud of. On the Right we have Kitzinger, Cheney, Romney....people who I disagree with vehemently on most levels, yet who have proven themselves to have honour and who truly believe in preserving democracy. Personally, I wish Rachel would run for president. She and Jessica Tarlov. Two amazingly brilliant, ariculate, strong women who could eviserate trump on any debate stage. They would run the country in a left-leaning, practical way.

As a German, it is both scary and dumbfounding to me, to witness the rise of fascism as we have learned *exhaustively* about in school in real time, just in a different place. This is one of the reasons why you would often hear "don't demonize Hitler and act is if he wasn't human", because he was - that means any person could, theoretically, become like this, ethics aside. The same thing holds true when it comes to Trump: yes, he is anti-democratic and a fascist, but do not forget how his propaganda machine works and THAT IT WORKS, considering it's in the realm of reality that he might actually be elected again - by other human beings! Hitler was elected too and then he made sure, that there would be nobody else to vote for. Now, I'm not calling Trump a Hitler and I will not relativize what Hitler has done, because his doing was of an individual quality like we have not seen before or after (and don't want to), but I'm talking about the mechanism of how Hitler got into a position to have done what he ultimately did.
All apt and true except "Hitler was elected". He never got more than 43% in a free election, and the Nazis were losing voters before conservative enablers made him Chancellor (and later gave him emergency powers). They betrayed their voters who didn't want Hitler.
Trump fashions himself off Hitler in his rhetoric calling people vermin because that’s exactly what Hitler called the Jews. Apparently you didn’t learn enough about Hitler exhaustively enough! Call it what it is! Hitler word usage and Hitler was not a human being! He was an evil sociopath just like Trump! And not every American falls for Trump’s garbage just his followers! His followers are not the whole country.

Wasn't he reading from a teleprompter?! If so, that wasn't a slip of the tongue.
Trump often reads from a teleprompter, but sometimes veers into a ramble of some kind. That's being used by some people as a way to blame only Trump. However, I think Trump's freewheel moments are usually more vague, whereas this was very clear and menacing.
He was off and on it for the whole speech, but she's saying it wasn't a slip of the tongue - meaning the whole "vermin" thing was actually written into said speech, and hence why he even repeated it on his joke of a website later on. Its usage was planned.

RM is right, the problem is the desire for "The Simple". Most important issues are complex and difficult to understand. There is no simple easy solution to them, so presenting them as "Simple" and offering a simple solution is very attractive.

Yeah KZhead has coincidentally stopped suggesting pretty much all serious substantive & reasonable voices. I used to get suggested EVERY video by her, bc I clicked, watched, & liked every video of hers. It’s been MONTHS with not a single suggestion, meanwhile I get recommended loads of right wing stuff, and even videos from channels with under 100 subs & videos with less than 50 views, on subjects I’ve shown no interest in… while avoiding dozens of channels I follow.

I Live in europe, but I find Rachel Maddows' and Ari Melber's shows on MSNBC so great and factual to keep me updated on whats going on in the USA. Their reports are always clear, and very well told, with a nice pace for everyone to understand even difficult topics. Unlike a lot of "big mouth reporters", who basically say nothing of value but have huge followings... I honestly don't understand why Rachel and journalists like her don't have a bigger following.

Puppet. Project 2025 is a detailed plan created by the billionaire-funded Heritage Foundation. It lays out in detail how the next Republican president, no matter who, will gather the power of all the independent agencies and departments into the White House, ignore Congress if it isn’t helping, and stop fair elections everywhere. The first part of this plan is to reclassify the professionals and non partisan experts who keep those agencies working, no matter what party has power. Now they can be fired for cause but The Leader will designate them as fire at will and get rid of 1000s of scientists and policy area experts. The Heritage Foundation is drawing up a list of people who will be loyal, if not competent, to take those jobs.

I love Rachel. She takes everything apart and explains it, making it so interesting that you often don't recognize the situation because she presents it so well and in depth.
