How Mojang RUINED The Copper Bulb

Many redstoners were praising the Minecraft 1.21 snapshots for adding things like the auto Crafter, Copper Bulb, and tick command into vanilla Minecraft. Many thought it would be the biggest redstone update to the game since the addition of Observers! But one snapshot changed the entire sentiment in an instant. From praising the update for changing redstone forever, to many saying Mojang just made the worst mistake in redstone history. What happened?

  • I also want to say RIGHT HERE this is not an excuse to harass individual devs! I wanted to make this video as objective as possible, only about the changes and things that have been said by Mojang! Also the option of completely changing Bedrock's redstone IS NOT EASY! The video kinda frames it as an "obvious solution" but that's because that's the only long term one. Making Bedrock's redstone 20tps is a huge undertaking, and no it's not because of "performance" on low end devices. It's just really hard to undo a system that has been in place for years. Anyway #RevertTheCopperBulb

    • I'm not very experienced in complex redstone, so I don't know if I use uneven redstone ticks. Though I probably am without knowing. I have several builds (2x3 hidden glass door, and fully hidden staircase with no pistons visible) that are quite complicated in my opinion, and I fear would completely break if Mojang is actually going to match Java's redstone system to bedrock's system. Not to mention how other things would become impossible or at least become 10 times as big for full compatability (quasi connectivity disappearing would be an absolute nightmare).

    • Bedrock's Redstone is already running completely differently from that of Java ; as such, it makes no sense to try justifying downgrading a feature on one version under the umbrella of "parity". There is no need to rework Bedrock's Redstone ; simply implement the components differently, just like all the others. Either some redstone illiterate morons at the top have enforced those changes onto the devs (I doubt technical individuals would have intentionally ruined such a praised feature for the sake of a single misinformed bug report, much less for that of "parity"), or Mojang is confirming that they are ran by their greed first and foremost, and that they absolutely do not care about their community, in spite of what they claim. I think there has been enough negative feedback thus far for them to have noticed, yet I doubt those changes will be reverted. It seems more and more likely to me that they are intentionally ruining "their" game under the influence of Microsoft ; because, if there's no financial gain, why should they bother delivering. We were already robbed of fireflies -a two single pixels ambient particle pretending to be an actual mob- for the same, nonsensical, illogical reasons. I will not bring up the concepts that didn't get released, as I agree on that they were but concepts. But here, more than sketches and draft implementations, we have been given a fully working feature to toy around with ; and yet, they *chose* to take it away from us. This is unacceptable. I mean, Redstone has never really known any love ever since Microsoft took over (it already wasn't getting much before then) ; but you'd think with younger, independent, popular devs joining the team, surely we'd be seeing improvements in that regard. And we did. Except that it would seem someone *else* had to intervene and actively worsen the content we had finally been given. This is why mods exist. Does any serious player still consider the purely vanilla experience of the game as "Minecraft" ? With its unusable bloated restrictive launcher, lack of basic features and customisation, and unpolished artifacts, be they visual or mechanical ? I need about a hundred or so mods to fill in the gaps they won't fill, and those are but client side mods. Then you get the content mods that should not even require a mod to play with, such as gnembon's carpet mod. Of all requested features, the only technical one we got has been the tick command, and I suppose the return command as well. There have certainly been some improvements over the last few years when it comes to datapacks, but no significant ones regarding redstone. Apart from this long awaited update. Now is our time. May they listen, for once ; May they not, and yet another mod will become mandatory. I long for the day they will discontinue the game (even if it's just Java), as I strongly believe it can be ran by the community, perhaps even as an open source project. I am aware of the existence of clones, but none are truly faithful in their approach. They feel more like Bedrock's interpretation than the actual game we had come to know and love. TL ; DR - I forgot what I wrote lol

    • Bedrock redstone is not broken (at least not more than Java is) so please don’t fix it. There are a couple bugs that would be nice to fix, but the vast majority of differences don’t need to be fixed. Full redstone parity will never be reached, so we should just let them stay different. I think the best solution to bring more parity would be to maybe add copy components, so like maybe tuff and honeyed pistons, with one acting like a bedrock component and the other acting like a Java component. The fundamentals of the systems are still so different that these wouldn’t work exactly the same, but it could cover a lot cases while not taking away from either version.

    • @@jaxonkearns8553 Making every tick available would break a whole lot of redstone in bedrock, while making bedrock redstone a whole lot more laggy, especially for those on lower end devices. Having components activate every other tick is immensely beneficial for performance because it firstly halves the amount of processing needed and gives leeway time for it to speed up if it needed extra time. As someone with a lot of experience in Bedrock redstone, trust me when I say that there would be huge downsides for bedrock in terms of performance and breaking existing redstone. However, Bedrock is not a good reason to have changed it in Java, because they are so different anyway, a one tick difference in one component really would not matter.

You can use leaf wood and observers to trasmit vertically redstone signal. For example if you pass trought a flor the wall sistem can not be used for the addiace t blocks, so the leaf sistem can, the only cons is that can be only 6 leafe long, so you need to add an observer and an other wood block.

That way, we can have our instant copper bulbs, 1-tick copper bulbs, 2-tick copper bulbs, and 3-tick copper bulbs in one package. After all, a buildup of copper oxide _does_ reduce conductivity. Just wax the copper bulb once you get the desired oxidation level.

  • This is an educational video I did not realise would be interesting as a non-redstone player (I use it sometimes, but am as good as players skilled in these blocks and mechanics). I found this relatable to a problem I had when the camel as added to the game. On Java, I rode camels and very much loved them. They jump a decent distance over gaps (making crossing gaps, small rivers and trees a breeze). They are tall enough to keep meelee ground enemies away from you (like zombies). And despite their size (2*3 blocks, 2*4 with a rider and 5 blocks to get under things comfortably), you can relatively get around your world in a similar versatile fashion as horses. even though they dont jump high or run as fast. They are a decent mount and with the added benefit to carry a second player with you (even though I wish they could still have a chest option lol) The problem with them is sadly Bedrock edition's version of the same mob is so drastic, I was very much upset. The bedrcok camels are clunky. They turn as slowly as boats (unlike the java ones that turn like horses), and their jumps are shorter. I dont know why bedrock had to do that to the poor animals. And no amount of developers spewing excuses about how the coding is different, the platforms are different or dare they say for the sake of balance/realism/consistency. It is a sandbox game where realism/blance/consistency is a balance between the players and the game (not the developers). The game is as realistic as how the player sees it in the game. Not how realistic the developers intended for it to be (which is a bs excuse seeing we have fictional animals, dimensions, magic and gravity defying lore playing a major role in the game). The game is balanced based on how well the players (emphasis on the plural here) manage with the game and each other. The game has favoured combat so much recently, players who are not skilled in it have to rely on other tactics to make up for the difficulty combat introduces (especially on hardmode, but that is beside the point). PvP has seen changes over the years where skill and timing became a secondary feature when put up against survival and enchantments (when players gain a monopoly on an item such as netherite. Other players will struggle to gain the same advantage monopolised players would have). Lastly, consistency. The game has (to my understanding) had rarely maintained a consistent reputation. Mostly because the company changed, the game changed, and the market changed. The balance they seek may not be what the community would enjoy, and vice versa. Here is hoping Mojang may revisit these things in the future. Because there are a good amount of things in the game they should *update* along with the new content they work so hard on adding to the game. (for example give the darn sniffer more plant seed types that they originally advertised. They honestly could not expect to add just 2 plants and call it day. Just to run off to the next idea for the public to vote out of the game. Yes I said *out* becuase 2 options are shot down, and the remaining option that had the most votes would be considered for the game.)

And the only one that is close being sensible is also stupid. That one being: making it more in sync with how Bedrock edition works. The reason why this is stupid is: why not just fix bedrock edition to make it work like Java edition, rather than ruining Java edition to make them more alike. Also, if they really wanted it all to be consistent, then there is a lot of other stuff they should have looked at first. Making it consistent to bedrock like this is a fools errand.

  • As many others in the comments said, the parity reason doesn't make any sense and I strongly agree. There are so many differences between the versions and even within the versions, especially in the realm of redstone. The delays in activation of pistons, and as a consequence, in Java the sticky piston can "spew out" the block. Quasiconnectivity(applies to both pistons, droppers and dispensers, not sure about autocrafters. If not, then another point to the inconsistencies within one version score) The observer, as seen in the video. 2 gt delay in Java, (I suppose) 6 gt delay in Bedrock. The odd-gt circuits (I suppose) don't work in Bedrock at all. +some more that I can't think of or not familiar with. Addressing the copper bulb alone, I can think of as few solutions: 1. Revert the 1gt delay in Java, leave 0gt delay in Bedrock. The easiest to implement with the least amount of social backlash and the most gratitude/whatever.(I'm not that good with words, you get what I meant) 2. Rework the entirety of redstone in Bedrock, and then revert the 1gt delay on the copper bulb in both versions. A difficult one, but if they want to bring the two versions to ABSOLUTE parity, they gotta do it sooner or later anyway. Sooner is better because of all the potentially new redstone components(+ the reaction of the community, whatever that means). 3. Do nothing(at which they are doing a great job lately) and face(or ignore) the social backlash(at the latter of which they are also doing a great job lately) and do more nonsensical stuff like this(at which they are also... you get the idea).

This I'd argue is even worse because it's not even due to any sort of technical limitations, they're just trying to treat Bedrock as their main game and therefore Java has to be more like it, not the other way around (even tho Bedrock's redstone is still inferior in so many ways).

It might take a while, but it would be well worth it. Each system has its pros and cons, but it would be beneficial for the overall health of the game if it was all pros. Give Bedrock Java's speed, consistency, and QC. Java would also benefit from Bedrock's movable tile entities and redstone connecting to pistons. Parity will be hard, and parity will take a while, but it will be very beneficial in the long run.
